Show mw Millard County Chronicle Progress Fillmore Area Chamber of Commerce buries “CAN’T” By Knox Huntsman Citizens of East Millard County gathered in the warm sunshine to lay to rest the spoiler of dreams and master of discouragement “CAN'T Fillmore is possibly the only town in the country that has decided to rid itself of this plague of mankind Attending the ceremonies were County Commissioner John Cooper Mayor Sam Starley Councilman Ross Melville and about sixty other notable enthusiasts It started with a police escort through Fillmore lead by a classic 1946 red and black Dodge truck dru en by LeRoy casket and a sign to the burial a earring plot The ceremony took place at the south end of Fillmore on H ighw ay 98 on a small plot of ground donated by Alan Roper Millard High School shop class fabricated a two foot long casket to bury CAN’T A CAN'T sign pledges from attendees and an information time capsule were in the casket The ceremonies started with two original songs written by Betty J Speakman and sung by Analise Lang and Loralie Whitaker Their unique county dress dialect and charms delighted the audience Additional musical offerings w ere presented by James Allen and his group consisting of Barbara Crowe Julie Pierce M akenzi Hunter and Haily Hunter In true showmanship style they rendered “High Hopes" “Accentuate the Positive” and “Happy Days are Here Again" in which the audience participated Ceremony organiser and speaker W Dan Speakman emphasized the importance of being positive happy and able to persevere even when everything seems to be against you He related several stones among which was the story of Benjamin Franklin's chemical fire which destroyed his laboratory and storage building At the start of the fire Franklin's reaction was to call his family to “come see this fire! You’ll never see anything like it again in your life" He rebuilt and went on to a successful career Scientist engineer inventor and Doctor of Obstetrics Clair Rogers of Riverton was the special speaker of the day His wife Alice Rogers introduced him and related fascinating experiences from their lives She said “what I looked for in a husband was a man that my children could look up to and want to be just like him" She met Clair Rogers at BYU and knew he w as the man Clair w as bom with cerebral palsy which made his life difficult Alice said “if you had to choose from all the handicaps there are physical handicaps would be the easiest to deal with Clair had no mental handicap " “He was so intelligent my goal was to leam all he knew have been working on it for 47 years and still don't know near all he knows" Alice said “we have six sons and one daughter and all of our children are genius’ like their father" She told how as a freshman in college he needed a job to put himself through school He went to the State Road Department and asked to take the examination for a graduate engineering student He passed with a 97 percent score and made supervisor of the group He worked that job for five months a year and went to school the other seven months until he earned his degree at BYU "Clair does not know the word CAN'T or QUIT "she said Clair Rogers used his walker to assist him to the microphone The audience was riveted as he told of his handicap at birth dependence on his parents and their w Rogers said “at four years old asked my mother to tie my shoes and she said ‘tie them yourself and walked away Four hours later learned to tic my shoes" Rogers said “from that time on knew was going to have to do it for myself and Utah Museum of Natural History travels to Delta Delta South Second Graders to learn why minerals “Rock” at Zions Bank The Utah Museum of Natural History and Zions Bank in Delta have joined gether to sponsor "Traveling Treasures Minerals of the World" an exhibition of colorful precious minerals collected from Utah and around the globe Zions Bank located at 20 E Main will host "Traveling Treasures” throughout the month of May during regular business The free exhibit offers just a hours glimpse of the 300 specimens on display in the Norton Hall of Minerals at the Utah Museum of Natural History While supplies last the bank will provide coupons for free admission to the museum located on the University of Utah campus in Salt Lake City On Wednesday May 8 at pm Colleen Talbot’s second grade class from Delta South Elementary took a field trip to the exhibit where they will participate in activ itics and leam about rocks and minerals from Utah Museum of Natural History outreach educator Lone Millward Relay for life Attention Millard County If Salt Lake's Channel 5 Dick Norse thinks our Relay for Life is worth a second look or visit w hy aren't you finding out for yourself Get a team together earn money for the American Cancer Society and come and have fun All you cancer survivors come shake hands w ith Dick who is a two time cancer survivor Let us honor you by being our special guests Stay and enjoy our food program luminary celebration and make a night you won't forget The relay begins Friday June 28 at 600 p m and lasts until noon Saturday June 29 Relay for Life is a unique challenging and fun way to raise money for the American Cancer Society in any community large or small -
