A century-olwoman tells her husband about a friend who was “slapped around" the night before “Well her husband’s been under a lot of stress lately” he excuses A husband ridicules his wife’s statement at a party telling everyone that she really is too stupid to join in a conversation with men His men friends agree that women should know their place Teenagers see an old Honeymooncrs episode on TV where Jackie Gleason says “One of these days Alice One of these days POW! right in the kisser” and they laugh Neighbors hear of a woman who is mentally physically sexually or emotionally abused and say “It’s her own fault she should leave" not realizing that the world the nation the community and sometimes even the family have helped her to feel that men have a right to abuse women if they do something wrong According to the Attorney General's report“Thcrc isone fundamental indispensable step to deter and prevent family violence: THE PUBLIC MUST BE AWARE OF THE NATURE OF THE PROBLEM AND IT’S OBLIGATION IN COMBATTING IT Until there is a broad clear signal that family violence is condemned by the community abusers will continue to ignore the reality of their crimes and victims will continue to blame themselves” No one deserves to be abused in any way Everyone deserves to be listened to supported treated with respect and to be valued If this idea is new to you then maybe you need to talk to New Horizons Crisis Center or one of its liaisons Call Becky Brown in Wayne County al Calhi Mickelson in Ephraim at Barbara Wwxi in Ml Pleasant at Doris Lund in Marysvale at Joseph Bemini in Juab County at or New Horizons Crisis Center in Richfield at or Please let us help you help yourself By Terre Smith Having lived in Millard County barely a month I’m still forming many ideas and opinions about this place my family and I have chosen to call home With that in mind Millard County must be one of the best kept secrets in Utah perhaps the entire West W here else could a life big city services and scenery body go to find postcards can’t duplicate? No I haven’t gone mushy (never accuse me of being mushy) so let me explain it from a newcomer's point of view I haven’t visited every town in the county (but I’m slowly getting there) yet in those I've visited the people seem genuinely friendly Often lost I’ve made a habit of asking where someone or something is I’m always treated as intelligent but uninformed Most other parts of the country where I’ve lived asking for help was many times an admission of stupidity True the communities in Millard aren't known for their strings of fast food and shopping malls For me a burger is always better when made at a true as of the opposed to the places And my family and I have found every item wc’vc needed without a trip to the mall in Utah County Another area I keep shaking my head to figure out why it is so amazing is the sheriff's office Everywhere I go I hear praises about the service compassion and efficiency of the Millard County Sheriff’s Office If I hadn't met Sheriff Ed Phillips myself and heard him speak 'd swear he as bigger than life But whether at a school DARE graduation or testifying in a felony case Sheriff Phillips comes across as both believable and compassionate His compassion appears for all mankind not just the law abiding But he doesn’t carry the responsibility alone The entirchcriff’s Office has many deputies who never could fit the stereotype of We're lucky enough to have one of the best operating county sheriff's off ees in the stale Doesn’t it sound like the best of and big city? Living in Delta make perfect sense to us Here we are greeted by name (if they know us) or smiled at as wc walk down a street But unlike many smaller communities w here 'vc lived Deltahas plenty to doeven for the Movies young and bow ling roller skating sw imming recreation centers and all the activities of rural life arc all available in w hat some of my old friends might call a town out in the boonics Let's not tell them how wrong they arc Instead let’s take their tourist dollars along w ith the genuine tourists who adore our areas and shake our heads at all that they are missing So far as you can guess wc really are overjoyed at being here in the best county in the stale Millard County Senior Contests by Ann Parkinson and Scott Williams Did you know that every year we have Senior Contests? Tourists want good places to stay to cal and to be entertained We have many good facilities throughout the county currently but seem to be lacking the facilities that encourage visitors to make this a destination rather than continue to pass through Most of the facilities needed to attract more tourists should be privately conceived and privately built Stale and County government's role should be to plant the “seed" by improving or building what is needed that will then encourage private citizens to build businesses next to or within the area developed What if we created a theme town based on our county's assets and history w hich would then encourage new businesses to develop? Look around the nation and see w hat’s being done in other areas to attract tourists and the benefits they reap by daring to take risks As residents do wc “build it and they w ill come” or do wc wait until “they” come? ings Keep stairways clear of all objects loads Avoid carrying Light switches should be at both ends of stairways and long halls For a free Home Safety Guide call the Utah Safety Council at - $20 00 J13 v in Advance Subscriptions In County J 10 New Horizons As Eye See It Sandy soils arc characterized by large pores that hold very little water These soils should be watered more frequently but with less water since it drains away so quickly On the other hand clay soils have tiny pores that hold a great deal of w atcr but don't drain very fast Sobccareful not toover lawns: too much water could make your lawn susceptible to root rot and other diseases A Gale Free Health Hotline Are generic prescription drugs as effective as brand name medications?
