Eight years ago I made that fatal mistake I had hopes that he would find the excitement and joy I have experienced during the challenge and pursuit of mule deer Over the years I have thoroughly enjoyed the companionship shared with others in our hunting camps and expected the same with this new adventure with Tobasco Tobasco w as raised most of his life in the suburbs of northern California He was a bright talented teenager who was blessed with three special gifts making pipe bombs grow ing long hair and listening to hard rock music We didn't have a lot in common but I wanted to share with him my love for hunting and the great outdoors One day while at Tobasco's house I asked If he wanted to go deer hunting with me Tobasco replied “Will we miss MTV? Madonna is going to be on next week” I said “yeah but it will be great to get out of this hot choking smog of Salt Lake City and spend a little time up in the cool fresh air of the mountains" Tobasco was quick to say“naaaa I think I have a dentist appointment besides I don't have a bow" I said “Don’t worry about a bow and arrows I have an extra one you can use” Tobasco repl ied “Do y ou h ave any of those exploding tips like Rambo?" That should have sent a warning flag up in my mind but it didn’t I must have been distracted by the video we were w atching on MTV Maybe my mind was disoriented from the rattling w indows that were shaking because his amplifier was turned up on high Tobasco finally consented to go after I told him about all the “free meat" he would enjoy after he bagged a deer The first day of the hunting season was hot and dry Stalking through the woods sounded like w alking on rice krispies All I saw were flashes of tails and antlers I got back lo the truck before Tobasco and opened a pepsi and sat down in the shade of a tall Douglas fir The sound of the soft breeze flowing through the branches and needles overhead massaged my mind into a sea of tranquility Suddenly I w as alerted by w hat sounded like the entire Chinese army marching and singing on the ridge above me The sound was getting closer and closer My worst fears became reality as I caught a glimpse of Tobasco singing and dancing through the tress and brush The closer he got the louder the sound was I thought to myself there is no chance he will ever get close to a deer or for that matter ever see one When he was 150 yards away I could see he was wearing headphone and was w singing along with the tape Tobasco was immersed in the music and oblivious to hat w as happening around him He was having the time of his life Archery hunting had far exceeded his highest expectations He confessed it w as more fun than watching Madonna on MTV Now you know why I don’t allow Walkmans in my hunting camp I don't want other hunters to have too much fun 4 proverbial porcine What do you think has happened? I weigh exactly the same today as I did in the beginning of September My body has tightened up my clothes fit better I’m stronger more confident feel great sleep like the dead and I can throw my arms and legs around with the best of them I haven’t lost a pound Am I discouraged? You bet Will I give up? Never Exercise and my new way of eating have become old friends now and I can't think of giving them up I now realize that my body is stuck on slow and it’s going to take a long time to convince it that I'm serious about this I cannot let my stubborn metabolism win I do not have to enter my fifth decade as an overweight matron They say that one day I’ll wake up and I won't be able to stop my body from fat And on that day I'll be able to eat normally again and not devouring this worry about every little mouthful Until then my body thinks I’m kidding It believes I'll stop sit down quit I’ve had some serious devil’s advocates over the years I had no idea the toughest would be my own inner chemistry I have a new deadline I'm now shooting for Valentine's Day I'll lctyou know how it works out trv '- ' 4 - - I doubt that there is any one arena that is more controversial at the moment than the issue of physical fitness health and wellbeing Currently there are infomercials runinsomning night and day try ing to convince niac viewers and housewives to buy this contraption or diet to try this pill There is of half hour even one that promises that one deep breathing will melt away those pounds and inches Now deep breathing is fine In fact breathing is our first requirement for life And it's true that few people breathe propOur Most breathers us of shallow are lungs hardly ever really fill up with oxygen erly benefits of jogging and aerobics Unless we exercise A big part of the comes from the increased air intake during and after the period of exercise But just lying prone in bed breathing deeply puts me to sleep I don’t see how I'll lose much weight that way In fact if I remember rightly that's how I gained a bunch Pills are not healthy they usually contain chemicals that deplete your body of needed nutrients and once the pill wears off you body craves those elements again and so you eat to restore your reserves Plus I've seen more than a few people go over the edge because of these pills and the sleep deprivation that comes with them Of course we all now know that diets are dangerous and they also deprive our bodies so that we gain the weight we lose plus additional pounds our body stores in case we decide to starve ourselves any time again soon The body doesn't want to die so when it believes it is in starvation mode it will hold onto any calorie as a preventative defense I once heard of a 400 pound woman who entered a weight loss study program at BYU and ate only 600 calories a day and she gained weight Every body is different and shysters are hoping that you will try one program that doesn't work and then move on to the other that wil' not work all the while thinking if you just find that one magic pill or ointment or food the fat will melt away and your weight problems will be solved However I'm doing my own research on this subject and I’ll tell you what I’ve found to be true with me I’m in a real battle with my body right now After falling off of one mountain and having a terrible car accident five years laterplus hitting that ever popular menopause barrier my body went into shock As I recuperated from broken back ribs and other serious injuries friends would come bearing plates of food Out of boredom loneliness and frustration food became my companion and I slowly gained 40 pounds More importantly my metabolism slowed down to stop Now that I'm fine I want those 40 pounds to go away (Of course Millard County bake sales are a sweet distraction) My mission is to reignitc my metabolism so that my body burns food as fuel I began my program in September w iih the goal of losing the extra weight by Christmas Plenty of time right? I cut back on almost all intake of fat (except for an cv'Casiontl treat) I’ve been lifting weights for one hour three times a week and doing two hours of aerobics nearly every day I’ve been working hard and sweating like the The most important teacher No teaching today It’s Thanksgiving and my family’s on vacation This is unlike most vacations Mostly we visit relatives There are cousins for the kids to fight with My sisters to trade stories with Uncles and aunts Grandparents And I love those vacations but this time w e have the opper tunity to travel and be with just ourselves We have no obligations We sit on a tx ach and eat fast food for dinner and stay in a hotel room with one son sleeping on 0 s floor and the other sprawled on the bed beside ours It's the middle of the night and I’m awai : because Jeremy’s snoring I’m lying here thinking how fast the years are flying by Jeremy's 17 Jared’s 12 realized that there won’t be many more family vacations with us all camped out together Soon there will be high school graduation and college and jobs and someday new families And no matter how close we remain it will never be like this again And I can’lhelp but regret all the things I meant lo leach them I should have started earlier to instill in them proper study habits I Yould have found more opportunities to practice thrift I should have drilled them in the importance of clean and taken advantage of federal grants to invest in pollution control devices for their sock drawers I sit up humbled and ashamed that I have let them down because aren’t they and they make bizarre purchasing decisions and the surgeon general has issued health warning labels posted on their bedroom doors But then I listen to them snore They are my sweet babies still They know basic manners (and more often than not remember to use them) They care about people who have less than they They are independent They lead more limes than they follow They are creative and energetic and funny and full of life and full of love And I come lo two conclusions almost simultaneously First whatever my shortcomings as a parent I’ve also had success Some of my lessons have taken Second my time with them is not over There are many lessons left to teach I must never slop being my sons’ most important teacher There is so much to do and so little time And I think I’ll get some sleep now We’re going to the beach tomorrow and it will be an important teaching day Christmas Addresses Oder Shawn Gonder 307 Sevier Sl 2 Sevierville TN 37862 Elder Spencer ScoviUe UL WOLSKA 142 Warsaw Poland Elder Brett Greathouse 1848 Harrison Ave Basement Bronx N Y 10453 Delta Reed Jeffery Fillmore Jay T Rogers |
