Show Page 6 Millard County Chronicle Progress Mav 1993 13 Sounds of Spring Heather Delta High Seminary Graduation Graduation for the DcluHigh School class of 1993 will be held on Wednesday May 26 1993 Graduation will begin at 7 p m in the Delta High West 300 North School gymnasium-5cm Seminary graduation for students in the Delta Utah and Delta West Stakes will be held on Sunday May 16 1993 The graduation will be held at the Delta Stake Center 72 North Center Delta Graduation will start at 7 pm The public is invited to attend Kennedy wins scholarship High School seniors from throughout the state competed for more than $7000 in college scholarships in the 7th Annual Utah Credit Unions’ High School Oratorical Contest The contest was held at Salt Lake Community College cm May 8 The six finalists received scholarships ranging from $600 to $2500 to apply to the college or university of their choice Fourth place went to Russell Kennedy a senior at Delta High School This year’s tople “What Do You Plan To Do With Your Inheritance? THE FEDERAL DEFICIT” brought a w ide range of responses from the contestants Utah Down to the Core H rather Comeau DHS- - "Don’t forget your 2 penciL” That statement has been said over and over this past week at DHS All the math and science classes have been taking their annual core tests These tests are mandated by the state and used to assess the core curriculum The test are sent to the district and slate offices where they score them by the class Math teacher Ron Peterson likes the lest because it forces everyone in the state to be tested by the same standards u U AT THE PLAZA May 14 thru Thurs Fri 520 E Topaz 4 Delta Utah 84624 Twin 7:00 May 20 1 Comeau of the sounds of spring began at seven pm last Tuesday May fourth on the DHS stage The DHS bands performed their annual spring concert The concert band began by playing the three numbers they rook to large group festival where they received superior ratings They also played a new number called “Blast from the Past” a medley of oldie rock songs “It went well and we’ve improved 100 since last year” said concert band president Christina Guichard There were four solo numbers performed at the concert Sherilyn and John Wilson played the brass duet that they took to state solo and ensemble Ingrid Miller who was awarded “outstanding brass soloist” at region played a trumpet solo John Wilson played a trombone solo He also received the award of “outstanding brass soloist" at region and received a I (superior) at state Heather "Run Fast Twin Y! Richfield - Delta Sidewalk Sale Super Summer Specials inside for the same values find Shop c pm & 9:10 Over five hundred Utah Stale Elks and their guests and families attended 2 the Stale Convention April 1993 at the Olympia Park Hotel St Convention Center at Park City Utah Mr Robert Prince of Mureay Utah wa elected the President of the Utah State Elks Association Mr Prince is a past of the Utah Press Association and employed by the Greens heet Newspapers for over 39 years moat recently serving as its publisher He it currently employed as the Advertising Manager of Food 4 Less Stores Most Valuable Student Scholarships were awarded to: Trisha A Netto Milford Utah $ 800yr for one year and Sarah Hyde Delta Utah $500yr for one year - BURT REYNOLDS 2 scholarships Stefenoff Vice President - Brandon Bringhurst Secretary - Marylynn Stoddard Social Manager - Brice Reeves Historian - Kelly Hamilton “I have a lot of plans next year and I hope we as a student body presidency can do a good job" said Kelly “I’m excited to work with the new presidency It’s going to be a fun year" added Brandon Bringhurst Nathan raps it up for most of the winners by saying “I’m glad I won and I’ll try to be all the student body expects of me" Christensen's ESDAYXNIG o Elks award SUMMERKicK-OFFSfiLE-iofirioiiL- Cr 7:10 Another rule was that they couldn't chase in the school building or go on car chases Guys were caught in several different ways The girls used methods of everything from being able to run faster than their guys or having a few friends pick them up and drag them outside to going to their house e arly in the morning and getting them out of bed or the shower Once the guys were caught in honor of the original Sadie Hawkin's and Little Abner the couples got “Married" by one of the cheerleaders The actual dance was on Friday from 9 to 2 At the dance most of the couples wore matching T shirts or other apparel Comeau candy posters handouts promises — It all ended at DHS on Wednesday May fifth The final election assembly was held first period in the auditorium All candidates gave their speeches in hopes of getting those extra votes The voting took place right after the assembly for seniors and during lunches for other classes During seventh period there was another assembly where the student body officers anofficers They nounced the new are: Student Body President - Nathan pm Road-e-- Although they didn't have to rope anything drivers at the second annua Southern on Saturday were put through their paces Regional Bus With events that require such skill as having to put a school bus through a space detail only two inches wider than the bus drivers tested their skill and attention to The competition consisted of three separate events a written test a pre driving inspection and the obstacle course Various obstacles measured each contestant's abilities in such skills as parallel parking backing up and depth perception One obstacle required drivers to park the inside duel back tire (on the passenger side of the bus) directly on a $20 bill The driver that could do it won the money The pre driving test consisted of inspecting the buses for safety Six items were a deliberately made defective The items ranged from a burned out tail light to missing windshield wiper Richard Grainger chairman of the event said the competition helps drivers improve their skills Before the competition begins drivers are walked through the course and told exactly what they will be scored on "We show them what to do They'll naturally be better drivers" he said Sixteen drivers from Juab County and south competed in the event The winner will go on to state championships on May 22 in Provo Harold Hepworth of Millard County took first place with a point total of 624 out of a possible 635 Don C Morris of Millard County look second place with 600 points Brian L Taggert of Washington County took third place with 580 points Morris won the $20 bill Vote for Me! Heather pm IteXJl-Ml'Wn-E Don Morris and Harold Hepworth Locals place in She's Coming After You" Christine Bender DHS- - Traditionally the Delta High do a Sadie Hawkin's Cheerleaders dance in may and this year was no different than any other Sadie’s is a girls choice dance in which the girls literally “chase" after their dates The dance was held on Friday May 7 The dance indirectly started Monday May 3 That is when the girls pay a dollar to sign up with a cheerleader for the guy they want to take to the dance In turn the guy s also have to pay a doll ar to see who is going to chase after them May 5 the chasing Wednesday started The rules for chasing were that the girls could only chase before and after school and during both lunches & 9:00 Comeau played a piano solo She received the award of most “outstanding pianist" at region and received a I at state The jazz band performed for the nale of the concert They played many numbers including some that they played at competition where they received great scores The audience was very big and quite enthusiastic “We haven’t had that big of a crowd for several years" said jazz band president Kenneth Howes The jazz band has been doing many other performances lately They performed at DNES’s “brown bag social" along with the South Elementary and Middle School The jazz band also played at the Tridel Review and they were featured at Snow College’s jazz band concert The bands have had a great year overall with their many performances and competitions They hope to do as well or better next year!
