two cows belong to Clift Jordan of Lehi and their combined value is estimated at $1700 According to Jim Maloney BLM law enforcement officer tests show the cows were shot at close range and one of the animals was partially butchered It is speculated that whoever killed the animals may have intended to use the meat but may have been frightened away before they could finish the job Jordan the owner ofthecattlesaidhe had suffered an estimated $25000 to $30000 in vandalism losses on his Tooele County property near where the cattle were shot this year Some of his water wells have been destroyed watering troughs and pipes torn out or shot through with numerous bullet holes fences destroyed and a cinder block building damaged He said damage so far this year has been much greater than any year the West Side” “Don't tread on our dates" warned Robinson "Because we’ve avoided the County Fair’s dates the other County’s Fair’s dates The exhibits were not meant to be in the show bam That building was not built for that" “I looked it up and it's called the Millard County Fair Complex" said Moon “That's ahorse bam" countered Baker “Do you know Cherie very well Pnil?” asked Baker "To change her mind is a waste a time” Jim Talbot made the suggestion that the National Guard be used to construct a tent for the exhibits thus freeing up the Indoor Arena Baker asked Moon "Tell me the story about Progress January 30 1992 Pag 3 Police Blotter The Sheriffs Sorry loyal Police Blotter fans Poice Blotter will not appear this week which requires the department has switched to a complicated computer program minimum of a PhD to decipher Look for a reappearance of Police Blotter next week Mormon air bagging As a sidebar to the Seatbelt Safety Awareness Week SherlfT Ed Phillips brought the following opinion to our attention This column written by Officer Blitz appears on a regular basis In the Utah County JoumaL We thank Sheriff Ed Phillips for sharing It with us and Officer Blitz for his permission to reprint this viewpoint I like to write tickets to people who ride around in cars with kids on their laps If there is a part of police work that still gives me real enjoyment it has to be writing tickets to ordinary housewife and grandma types who think nothing of holding a child on their lap while they bum to the market or family gathering “Oh like this is a major crime” they’ll say with lots of snot I bet you feel really good about writing me a ticket just for holding my baby” “Yeah" is my reply Td feci even better if I could soc k it to you for automobile homicide when you get in an accident and crush junior to death between you and the dasfinoard" Kids on laps arc irreverently referred to in local cop parlance as "Mormon air bags" It’s a cruel way of referring to an even cruder practice of putting your kids between you and a killing spot I don’t know whether it's because Utahns are lazy or because it’s impossible to buy a car equipped with enough scat belts for the typical Mormon family Whichever I still see lots of kids being carried on laps Consequently I also see more kids than I like with punctured lungs skull fractures and internal bleeding from accidents that shouldn’t have injured anyone at all Let me tell you that's when grandma and mom get real upset Unfortunately by then it's too late to take any preventive measures I suppose everyone who carts around their children believes that this time they won't get in an accident Certainly not between the house and church they’ll tell themselves It's a delusion of reprieve a goofy belief that God somehow likes them better than he does all the other folks he lets get in piddly but fatal accidents I’ve seen a lot of really dumb moves concerning kids Some parents think it’s O K to put junior on their lap and then buckle the seat belt around both of them Good idea in theory but in reality it breaks down because when the crash happens the adult behind junior comes forward hard enough to collapse junior's ribcage his pancreas lungs and bladder Another moronic move is the one where the kid actually sits behind the wheel while dad drives It’s considered by some as good wholesome family entertainment to let Billy Bob pretend he’s driving I’ve seen some of these kids after dad's bulk has strained them through a steering wheel in a crash There's nothing like a funeral for getting a family together Perhaps the best yet is the lady I stopped for zapping through a school zone at the speed of light Not only was she late for an appointment but she was actually breastfeeding her baby while she drove I sort of hoped she’d plead not guilty to the ticket It would have been great courtroom drama Then there’s the shining intellect that allows kids to stand up in the front seat or puts a load of kids in the bed of a pickup for a drive The really downside of this move is that it’s often tough to find all the kids after the driver butt ends a parked car Look no one ever plans on an accident Riding around with your kid on your lap may cause you to be extra personally I doubt it because if you’re stupid enough to do this then you probably aren’t bright enough to watch what you’re doing You also have no control over the nut in the other car You may be only going 15 mph but the guy coming around the comer might be doing 100 with the help of a really creative drug mixture Then again it might be me with a ticket book (This article originally appeared the Utah County Journal Novem1991 ber It Is reprinted with permission) In Hotline Offers Advice on Neck Pain and Headaches
