nament in 1994? This event will bring thousands of visitors to the State of Utah and jxissibly to Millard County It may also be the only opjxirtunity for most of our women bowlers to participate in a national tournament How sad to think that they may be denied that opjxirt unity Also llie if wc lose our certification Salt Palace has been approved as a site for the ABC National Tournament and sixin will Replacing a bid on an ujxoming tournament Again it would be a great opjxirtunity for our men to participate in a national tournament for one am proud to be a member of die world’s largest women’s sjxirts organization die WIBC Through diem our women bowlers arc provided the recognition and awards for dicir bowling achievements the same as the men gel through ABC I would like to personally and publicly diank Joyce and Karen for a sujxir job of management of the bowling center for dicir promotion of the sjxjrt of bowling and for the preservation of the integrity of the game Jolinda Nickle Sec West Millard Women’s Bowling Association Double talk is trouble talk Dear Editor Double talk is trouble talk was one of the headings in the article last week departregarding districts dissolved ment formed This double talk is especially true regarding jxilitics Isn’t it strange how politicians view their role in government "of the jvcople for the jveoplc” before and after they gel into office? Before “the jvcoplc should have a voice” afterwards “you had your voice when you chose me over the other candidate "now I’ll tell you what’s what" Article quote: "Roger Killpack of Delta presented the commissioners with a petition of 350 names he had gathered in several days all asking that the commissioners not dissolve the District" Note: He could have gathered a thousand more I know of at least one Answer quote from article “All three and Robyn county commissioners Pearson newly appointed Personnel Officer for the county lake the official position that they haven’t heard any Commissioner comments negative Chairman Jer’E Brinkcrhoff’s has been that all of the people he talked with are “thrilled" with the new department and its offerings” The article shows numerous other how former contrarieties regarding arc of the “districts” employees "thrilled" with the harmony between management and workers Reference to chapter 5 of the Policy and Procedure Manual 31 was quoted ‘‘Excessive turnover is costly and therefore should be avoided Comjxrtcnt employees who resign should be encouraged to recon- sider" How well is this done? The answer is found in the actions taken in the commission meeting rcjxirtcd in the same pajx'r Quote: “Robyn staled that he had just met with Micky Robinson East Millard Recreation Swimming Pool Manager and that there were some rough sjxits but she would be coming on” “In a meeting I just had with Micky just told her ‘Oh by the way Micky you are going to be on six month probation as a county employee”’ Will the head of the new department be on probation? The answer is found in the commissioners meeting report: Quote: “Commissioner Baker hcljx:d to clarify the situation All county employees go on six month probation When the road department sujicrvisor if he comes out of the road department will be placed on six months probation” Quote Commissioner Mixin: “Only full time employees are on probation When the sheriff s department came on with the county all employees who were certified came to work on a probationary basis” “The Jackson: Quote Attorney county would have been in trouble had it not followed the Policy and Procedure Manual" Quote Robyn Pearson: “If we had treated people selectively by saying ‘you’re on probation and you’re not’ then we would have been in trouble If we didn’t have these distinct parameters by law it would be a can of worms” Other questions raised the answers to which are found in the rcjxirt on the commissioners meeting very clearly stated Who’s minding the store? Who’s on third ready to score? Flellcnbrand Ncwspajx:r reporter asked “Who’s running the county?” stated Baker "The commissioners” mafia" "Not the Jer’E Brinkcrhoff added “We’ll get the answer and it will be straightened out after lunch” Flellcnbrand asked again the down town mafia? No answer was given When the commissioners were asked to revive the idea of an annual general meeting to get citizen input Baker said “send them a letter They’re just as mixed up when they’re through with a meeting as they were when they came in” of The employee understanding 401 K plan was then compared with the understanding of the recreation district "We’ve explained and explained and explained and still nobody get it People think we’re cheating them” This reminds me of Johnny's answer when teacher questioned his ability to understand “I can understand anything you can explain” Question the action of anyone in politics the answer finally is “If you don’t like what I do vote me out” Vote them out and what do we get? Seldom not much better Too bad we can’t put them on 6 mo probation instead of 2 yrs 4 yrs or 6 yrs whatever length of term Merrill Dutson For months now I have been writing this column in an effort to explain a bit about who I am and how view my work I continually hojic that w hat I write is under stixxJ never know of course how your filters affect the interpretation of my words You already know that I sec my work as a calling that our freedom of the press is our greatest freedom and that I'm honored to be a part of that jjtoccss Rcjxming the news is difficult Often those who have those who have the most to lose are those most vocal about my inaccuracies and my failure to rcjxirt the news "correctly" They just want me to say what they want to hear They try to interfere try to control try to undermine my wo k They scare me Not because of their perceived jxiwerbut because wonder where we as a nation would be if they succeeded at their efforts of intimidation At the moment just south of us in Beaver County a example of how politicians can cripjilc the news process is unfolding You may have heard something about liiis Evidently a hospital administrator became involved in a “try si” w ith a hosjiilal financial officer According to my editor at the Salt Lake Tribune these two then proceeded to help themselves to vast amounts of cash Important records were stolen or altered The affair ultimately cost the hospital up to$j()O0 a month even change from a coke machine was reported trial was held complete with a packed missing Charges were filed and a courtnxmi This entire story developed over a period Amazingly to me the lixal ncwspajxir the Beaver Press published by Lisa Yardlcydid not even mention this story Yardlcy stated in a Deseret News story that she ignored the story because those involved were accusing her of throwing “mud" at the county She says that she knew it was a big story but she received a clear message from city leaders that she was expected to print only “gixxi news” She succumbed to the pressure As far as I'm concerned the big story in all of this isn't the love affair couples have been cheating on each other since man first found his legs The big story isn't was invented the embezzlements jxtojile have been stealing since jx:rsonal The big story isn’t the light sentencing or the fact that the woman wound up testifying against her former lover The big news is the effectiveness with which the local government had in stifling the story The big news here is the silence of the press Somehow Channel Five finally got involved and now the story being discussed I’m stunned that intimidation w as effective at this level for this length of lime It’s my belief that Yardlcy is in the wrong business suggest she apply for a job somewhere in public relations where gixxi news is jireferred Remember our forefathers were ojiprcssed jxtojilc They came to these shores out against the governments that held from lands that offered them no chance to them in virtual slavery After these freedom fighters completed the long and difficult voyage across the Atlantic they set about to construct the “great American experia democratic government which would guarantee them freedom of particiment" pation The very first item on their agenda w as to insure the freedom of speech through the First Amendment to the Constitution These jx'ojile knew from cxjx:riencc that without a voice in government all other freedoms would be destined to failure That was over 200 years ago Your right to know is a freedom take very seriously I believe wc must use our freedoms or we’ll lose them We must pul them into daily action I also believe that hungering for fairness honesty truth and insight jxroplc are intelligent What I do angers a lot of people usually those who have something to hide Yet these arc die same jx:ople who will kncxking on my dixir when they suffer any kind of injustice They can’t have it both ways Then therc'arc those who want me to go away altogether those who believe wc can all live just fine without the scrutiny of the press This is not only unAmerican but dangerous as well Herein lies the path to fascism and totalitarian thinking (as well as putting the spin on old Thomas Jefferson as he slumbers in the earth) I’m probably delusional but don’t sec why fairness honesty integrity consistency truthfulness and living by the law is to be avoided in order to gel ahead I think it’s jxissible to succeed under these guidelines But what I come up against over and over again are jxtojilc who onec in power try to ignore Uiese principles in order to try to control those who put them into power in the first jilacc Rural ncwspajxtrs usually have to rely on those who are learning on the job therefore small town intimidation as in Beaver has a chance to succeed To me gtxxl news comes in an ojxtn book As a rcjxirter I’m not to be feared not unless you’re doing something wrong Home and School: Vital Links President by LILY ESKELSEN Utah Education Association Give kids a chance don’t think wc give kids enough chances Sometimes We’d been writing to our pen pals for six months But our pals didn’t exactly write back They were students at the Hartvigscn School and severely mentally and physically disabled Nonetheless our relationship with them was alive and well and warm We wrote about what our cl ass w as doing Our field trip to Timpanogos Cave Our science experiments Our Valentine’s Dance Wc put in pictures We put in sticker prizes Wc put in candy Their letters told us about what they were doing The art projects The new The swimming Uicrajiy Their letters were written as if our pals wheelchairs themselves had written them We knew though that the words had been put to pajx:r teachers and student aides who worked with these remarkable friends by At the end of the year wc had a party to meet them hojx:d that had prepared my 6th graders for the realities of back braces and wheelchairs and for their pals whom they had come to know through the eyes of those who lovingly served them but who may not be able to understand them or answer them The chair lift of their bus brought each pal down to us one at a time Each of my students found his or her pal There were perhaps two or three minutes of awkwardness Then the hugs started They hugged us first but wc hugged back beautifully Wc turned on obnoxious rap music and both feci and wheels danced Wc ate cookies and spilled pink punch And wc piled together for our picture “Wait! "one of my kids yelled He ran over for a napkin and gently wijxtd the drool from his pal’s smile “Now you look axil! O K Wc’rc ready" Kids deserve a chance A chance to care to help to give Our kids will surjirisc us if wc give them a chance The biggest fish of all Dear Flditor: In each family or household across this nation people allow themselves so is this much money for entertainment not correct? Some folks use this allowance to fish some to hunt some to bowl some to golf some go on cruises and others dine in fancy restaurants Me I go to the races preferably where there is wagering for you see “I Am Evil!" Now I should have gone fishing bought a boat a motor a pole and reel gas worms and a lunch If lucky I may bring home a big fish But instead since I am so evil I take my family twenty five dollars and go to the races When we arrive at the race track we arc greeted by many many evil friends stake presisome bankers lawyers dents bishops senators movie stars cowboys and housewives We arc seated at a nice table then we walk out to view the most wonderful sight our eyes can behold that to us is the magnificent animal called the race horse Wc study each one as they walk proudly to the track We see the deep concentration on the faces of their lots the jockey and wc know we are about to witness the greatest athletic ability found in any sjxort anywhere for we understand the beauty of this sport The race has ended and as the winners stand proudly in their circle of flowers I'm jumping up and down for the price of a can of worms I just won $94700 And I don't feel a bit evil in fact I feel fairly intelligent smart enough to have caught such a big fish! Be careful lest you loose the biggest fish of all your right to think and choose Donna Burns Satina Utah Letters to the Editor continued Why Not Dear Editor: Why not? Be it projxiscd that the mayors employees and others involved in the dispute about dissolving the recreational districts assemble and petition for a moratorium to be declared on the action to terminate said districts until the employees and other involved have been given a chance to petition for redress of their grievances against the commissioners concerning the sjxxific terms of their employment also with pay retroactive until the employees grievances are resolved The above is in accordance w ith the 1st amendment of our constitution Kristina Taylor |
