You’re the GREATEST and it’s been my pleasure working with you! Thanks and Best Wishes Linda Beard Response to Emotion vs facts Fkditor: In his letter published 122691 concerning the proposal by Ash Grove Cement to bum hazardous wastes David S Whatisname charged that most reactions were based on strong emotions rather than factual issues I would like to respond to the points he raised “The words ’hazardous waste’ cause a reaction of 'NOT in mv backyard’" When the backyard in qucsUon is located directly over the water supply for the entire area it docs more than make my knee jerk-- it makes my whole body twitch It’s not the words that cause the reaction it’s the stuff itself and the incredibly stupid proposed location And by the way the tragedy at Bhopal India wasn’t caused by "hazardous wastc’Tt wasNEW stuffas was the railroad car of herbicide that did wonderful things to that river in California Not to mention the truckload of cyanide that wound up on the freeway near Kanosh And as for calling it "alternative fuels" instead of "hazardous waste” we could change the name of battery acid to iced tea but it wouldn’t make it any safer to drink 2 "What about the tons of ’hazardous waste’ that is generated here and disposed of in the county landfill?" What about it? agree that we do generate Uxi much dangerous garbage along with too much garbage in general but what dixts that have to do with the Ash Grove proposal? Arc you suggesting we haul it up there to bum it? Or arc we working under the theory that two wrongs do make a right? 3 "I am not opposed if occurs within the guidelines established bv the Where were these proper agencies" agencies at T tmes Beach of Love Canal? I can’t help but remember that these "proper agencies" arc part of a government that is essentially a continuation of the same government that once tried to have catsup declared a vegetable And personally I don't trust them any further than can throw them Depending on the government to watch out for our interests is a lot like using the "rhythm method" of birth control only don't think Ash Grove is gonna ask us later if it w as gixd for us too defer judgement on the techni4 cal matters to someone who knows" In other words listen to the experts? When was the last time you heard an "expert” whose opin ion varied from whoever was paying them? I admit that it sometimes happens but when it dixrs they aren't called “experts” they’re anymore called “unemployment statistics” 5 regulations Transportation are sufficient and workable" Where were these regulations in the incidents I mentioned above? Or when tlie truckload of beer (hazardous waste to be?) wound up on its side here in Lynndyl just recently when the driver misjudged the turn? 6 “No the system is not rxrfcct" Well here’s something else we agree on But when the stakes include the water supply for the entire area can we afford to settle for anything less? I have to plead “guilty” to the charge of using (or at least attempting to use) strong emotions in this letter but the facts involved demand strong emotions and my intent is not to sit here quietly saying "Excuse me but believe that we have an uncontrolled incident of an exothermic reaction occurring at the present time” No my intent here is to stand up and scream “FI RE” at the top of my lungs BECAUSE OF ITS SITING THE ASH GROVE PROPOSAL IS ONE OF THE STUPIDEST AND MOST DANGEROUS IDEAS I HAVE EVER SEEN! What kind of an idiot would deliberately handle dangerous materials right smack on ton of the only water supply for an entire arc3? Do they think that they’re immune to accidents or the law of gravity? Dtx:s the opportunity for profit justify them putting all of us at risk without our consent or compensation? And if contamination occurs what then? Do they say "Whoops” “Gee we’re sorry" then fire some scapegoat and file for bankruptcy protection (like Manvillc did with asbestos) leaving u$ holding the bag and feeling thirsty? In that event I would strongly support criminal penalties for the planners of this villainy but they could probably get off on an insanity plea because of the obvious lunacy volved No the time to slop this is NOW before our water becomes an endangered species If Ash Grove wants to bum "alternative fuels” that’s well and good but dammit don’t do it on top of our water! WE DON'T WANT TO SWIM IN YOUR TOILET SO DON’T YOU PEE IN OUR POOL! Richard S Morrison Lynndyl Utah Dumb Dumb at speI guess I’m really dumb Certainly cific times I know I’ve done dumb things me of being People sometimes even accuse dumb Usually I don't care I puff up with assurance and Errgc ahead on a quest for knowledge definition insighL Most generally this posture of confidence camcs me through the days of doubt But then wham! I get hit with so much dilemma that I literally stop in my tracks wondering what’s to get to the heart of things going on around me In my business we're always trying Where When and Why I always try to using the five W’s of the trade: Who What add How to the equation to flesh it all out When faced with a Gordian Knot of a situation I first apply those questions first trying to make sense of what s whirling about me I begin to wonder how really thick I am If cap't get clarity I ask these questions again rephrasing them in an effort to come to the answers through another dixir And usually this tactic gets the job done It’s rare that I have to take a third approach I do all of this in a quest for truth And truth like beauty is in the eye of the beholder Truth is like an elusive evasive and fragile butterfly that flits around my think can sec it clearly sometimes only catch a periphery of vision Sometimes of range while I glimpse Sometimes truth darts past my vision completely out stumble around in the darkness still seeking searching and hoping for some vision Truth is also precarious relying on constant vigilance to ensure a valid interpretation Truth relics on communication to stay alive Without communication truth cannot exist Truth like a foreign language often needs interpretation Basic biological needs arc truthful: hunger thirst die urge to survive It's hard to listen to lies when your stomach is growling Ideal with truth through my words That's all I’vt got to get to the bottom of things And I take my job seriously get cranky when other people thwart my efforts when they obstruct my quest for facLs Words are my bread and butler literally So when I'm confusedfwhich is often) I go to the people who can help me to understand the grey areas I'll admit that at the January 6th County Commissioner’s meeting I was very took up a lot of the Commissioner's time by asking questions about the confused Recreation Department I also had a few questions about Public versus Closed had a problem Meetings of the County Commissioners And over and over again understanding the language in a letter sent recently to employees of die now defunct was confused about the use of the word “termiRecreation Districts Specifically nate” as in “All employees of the West Millard Recreation District will terminate employment with the District as of December 31 1991” Well after discussing this over and over again with the Commissioners and in a private interview with Robyn Pearson die temporary Recreation Department director I think I finally understand At least the logic Or at least part of the logic Robyn asked me if I was really listening I think am but I have U) admit that I'm having a hard time (I reminded Robyn that as far as I'm concerned there arc no dumb questions Robyn stated that as far as he was concerned there are no dumb answers I disagree There is one dumb answer -- no answer Even “I don't know" is preferable) Aristotle once said something to die effect that: “If we can define our terms we can argue successfully and change each other's minds" So I looked up the word "terminate" in an effort to define the terms Webster gives several definitions the first being: to bound to limit to form the extreme point or side of to set a boundary The second definition: to end to finish to complete To have it's end Robyn and the Commissioners all stress dial it was the Districts that were being terminated not the employees and that employees with the Districts were encouraged to apply for employment with the new Department As worked my way through the definition explanation and dilemma of all of dtese words during the Commissioner's meeting Marlene Whicker Courtly Clerk stated that was splitting hairs “And that’s dumb” she said Maybe But splitting hairs is what I do for a living And Marlene as a woman who works with the law should understand that splitting hairs is not dumb In fact often it is the only way people can come to an understanding of the words they’re using The bottom line is this: there are qualified people w ho feel they’ve been fired there arc Commissioners and county elected officials who feci they've been betrayed And we the users of the recreational facilities and programs that have been developed over the years arc those who will suffer the most from their inability to sit down discuss the options and come to some kind of an agreement that most of them have told me they’d like Stubborn pride and a of dialogue has crippled those involved from getting down to some honest discussion — creating a could have been handled differently resulting in a situation It could still be turned around It’s not too late But it will lake as one person stated "concessions on both sides” And that don’t think will happen Without someone making the first move we’ll remain at this standoff And that my friends will really be dumb Meanwhile I’ll continue to do my mental jumping jacks my brain like a dry waffle thirsting for the syrup of truth knowledge definitions And I’ll keep looking for answers And splitting hairs And probably hoping I don’t look too dumb in the process January Millard County Junior West and 700 South notified the EPA of its intent to blend and bum hazardous waste as a “alternative" fuel Although current corporate planning appears to have backed off from this intent there arc no good reasons for making assumptions about future company decisions Present Utah law leaves government and citizens powerless to prevent this from happening Representative Joseph Moody (R- which would Delta) has profiled keep the Salt Lake Cement kiln and the state’s two other cement kilns from burning hazardous waste Please contact your legislators and urge them to support HB 16 We do not need and unlaxcd hazardous waste burned in downtown Salt Lake City We don’t need to bum it in Morgan and Juab Counties cither The health risks associated with such operations certainly outweigh any perceived economic benefit Dr Thomas E Chandler Home and School: Vital Links President A by LILY ESKELSEN Utah Education Association mind that wants to know Goxl question Brilliant question One of the best questions I've ever heard I'm glad you asked that How do you respond to your child's questions? Anyone who has dealt with children from birth to adolescence know s that there is a kind of cycle that questioning we are hammered by questions gixts through When a child is "How docs the light go on?" "Does my hamster gel lonely ?’”‘Docs God take a nap?” Then there comes a time in grade schixrl that we all remember The time w hen we don’t understand something but we’re afraid to raise our hands We’re afraid everyone else knows the answer We’re afraid to look dumb (Remember your relief w hen someone else asked the question you wanted to ask?) For many young people it turns around in high school The questions once again arc hammered out but the answers arc not as easy to nail down The questions lake on a “Why do we have tone The challenge is to societal customs and family traditions But it's still important the questions come back The most successful teachers the most encouraging parents arc the ones who delight in a gixxl question asked They praise it They ponder over it They value it They give it some of their time rc Because it's in more than in learning occurs It’s in a mind that’s curious That’s rebellious Thai’s creative It’s in a mind that wants to know to" Inez sez Spelling Bees and “Sour Grapes” Friday Dec 13 1991 was the High Priest Banquet and Party for Sutherland 2nd Ward It was also the Bob Mixxiys’ 16th wedding anniversary The entertainment at the party consisted of singing and a spelling bee Mr and Mrs Vcm Wood were in charge of the entertainment It w as surely a fun evening with good fixxl gcxxl friends and gixd entertainment found myself recalling spelling bees that had participated in the 4th grade in the farm ing community called Wallace about a mile outside of Moncltc Ark I digress where we lived is not important to any Chronicle Progress reader Maybe that I loved spelling bees at the very early age of 10 is of little importance cither except to me I learned a very important truth at one of the spelling bees In my fourth grade class a boy whose father was one of the biggest land owners and who also happened to be the President of the School Board The boy was one of the jxxtrcst spellers in the class w ho could hardly spell his ow n name The spelling bee was being held at night and the room was Tilled with parents The boy's father was being very officious that night Pronouncing the words to spell were two teachers The boy may not have been able to spell his own name w idiout help but he could spell the 19 letter word “incomprehensibility" and I could not The word was not part of a 4th grader’s vocabulary and of little use to me but the boy's father requested that the teacher permit the boy to Sx:II it At first the teacher said "no" as no student knew how to use the word in a sentence but it was pointed out to the teacher that the boy’s father was the President of the Schixil Board and it might be w ise to do as he requested and let the boy spell the word The teacher capitulated never did know who was the more disgusted with that episode Mamma Inland or Sarah Inez We later heard that the teacher had to permit that display for her job was on the line Imagine anyway I I a lost that one spelling bee to boy and his father! Do sound "sour grapes"? Perhaps! |
