I’ll bet a thousand dollars you wouldn’t be pleased I’ll bet you would threaten argue and persuade Gangs are growing all over the country and few people especially in rural areas understand their structure I do I lived m East Los Angeles one of the toughest gang areas m the world for nearly two years I saw young men die because they lived in the wrong part of town I watched a man bleed todeath because others held hate for his fatlier’s father It was gruesome beyond my comprehension And yet I began to comprehend slowly though my tolerance for this blanket blindness withered until the only thing I hated was hate itself turf One block belongs toone gang and another Gangs are always about territory to another And people get killed in the extreme if they happen to step over the line The futility and despair of gangs is vividly portrayed in “West Side Story” and Romeo and Juliet These stones of forbidden love and the tragic consequences of generational hatred sadden us with the stupidity of their loss And yet how many of us see these stones as our own? I am quite surprised to discover that I've landed in the middle of two gangs the Fillmore gang and the Delta gang And while the residents haven't started shooting at each other (yet) they most certainly run die profile of gang mentality And I'm shocked The values I learned dunng the 60s have stayed with me because they nng with truth One of these beliefs I have is the concept that our world would be a lot better off if we could shed our boundaries and borders and become the human race rather than isolated pockets of one tnbat group fearful of the others “Imagine” John Lennon sang “a world living as one” He and I wonder if you can When I look this job I became the Millard County reporter Not the Fillmore reporter not the Delta reporter It is my job to cover the county from Cove Fort to Kanosh from Garrison toGandy And as I settle in that concept is becoming a reality But as I travel the county increasingly encounter deeply felt prejudices And surprisingly from people I expect to be using more of their “grey matter" I want to warn you-suffer from a syndrome I call “prejudicial backlash” It comes I hear whenever me upon gossip rumor or innuendo It works like this: someone begins to tell me how awful another person or group is and suddenly the words I hear begin to blur and my only thought is that the person who's speaking to me is the one I have to watch and distrust I know gossip is rampant in a small town It's expected But I don’t like it I certainly don't like to hear it It's always of a personal nature and should be told to the person who is involved not me I have been told that the animosity between east and west Millard County begins with high school rivalry I don’t think so The kids seem to be able to leave their grievances on the sports field It’s their parents that I’m having the problem understanding Someone told me not long ago that I had better get used to the black bitterness that surrounds me I became infuriated I will never accept the dark side I will never join the gang And as I told this individual "if you’re not part of the solution you’re part of the problem” (I picked that up in the 60s too ) How can we possibly grow into our greatest potential if we don’t band togetJicT to care for ourill our elderlyour indigent our youth and for those lifeforms not human? That should be our business not despising a community 35 miles away Millard Fillmore was known for bringing the first bathtub into the White House It’s unfortunate he wasn’t the man who reunited America after it’s bloody civil war Maybe the county would have a different legacy to follow than bathtub races down Main Street The way I see it even Abraham Lincoln would be challenged by this 28 towards Levan A Sign will be placed along the highway marking a gravel road on the west side of the highway Topics include Tillage and Sustainable Small Grain Varieties Agriculture Fertility m Small Grains Dryland AlSmall Grain falfa Varieties Varieties Plots and Tillage Plots Alternative Forage Crops and Shrubs lunch will be proComplimentary vided It would be very helpful but not necessary if you would conlact our office if you plan to attend to help us get a count for the meal I will be taking a car and if you would like a ride please call The following actions were taken in Circuit Court Fillmore Friday June 28th: Chad D Godbe of Salt Lake City appeared on one count of Forgery of a check a third degree Felony and a charge of theft a class B misdemeanor He is to return for a waiver hearing m July Mr Godbe also appeared for view of two previous items and ordered toconlinue to pay fines on both previous court actions Judie A Slope of Southern California did not appear for an arraignment for one count of speeding one count of giving false information and one count of nodnver’s license on person all class B misdemeanors A bench warrant was issued for her arrest and driver’s license divisions are to be notified Jason Craig Greathouse appeared for arraignment for a DUI with injury accident a class 'A misdemeanor The item is continued until July 12lh for entry of plea Lotus Lynn Pratt appeared for arraignment on one count of a DUI one count of a DOR and one count of speeding The case is continued until July 12 th Michael James Slea Iowa appeared for arraignment for one count of theft one count of a DUI and one count of a DOR Mr Slea entered a plea of not guilty on each count and bail was set at $3000 Randy Clark Mikesell Iowa appeared for arraignment for theft of services ($1000 gas skip from Kanosh station) Mr Mikesell pled guilty was order to serve ten days on time served and to pay restitution Hoskie Begay appeared for raignment on one count of a DUI a class B misdemeanor Court entered a plea of not guilty on Mr Begay’s behalf and he was released on his own recognizance Rex D Powell entered a plea of guilty through counsel for one count of attempted theft by deception a class A Liberty - A misdemeanor His case was referred to APP for pretrial evaluation Bonnie Bishop appeared for entry of plea for permitting driver to unlawfully operate vehicle a class B misdemeanor Charge was dismissed Joe Michael Couch was ordered to make application to be readmitted to alcohol treatment program Ronald Edward Hanson Jr was ordered to pay restitution for horse by July 1st John Allan Sims was fined $1000 and ordered to serve six months in jail 30 days on each count to run concurrently Donovan Yates appeared with counsel for a motion to review probation and hearing on truck forfeiture for trapOrders will not be violations ping changed Neal E Mooi appeared for early release and was granted release and suspension of balance of sentence Shaun Lynn Forsberg probation was terminated Rick Gordon Searle appeared to enter pleas of guilty to DUI and evading a police officer amended from evading a police officer with excessive speed Case was referred to APP for report John David Rainbolt appeared with counsel for probable cause hearing on si x counts Probable cause was found on each count and case will be referred One count of excessive loDistnctCourt speeding one count of driving with expired driver's license one count of possession of drug paraphernalia one count of possession of controlled substance (LSD) with intent to distribute one count of possession of controlled substance (marijuana) and one count of controlled substance with intent to distribute (psilocybin) Several civil matters were also heard by the Court Judge John C Backlund resided Musical Celebration Of Freedom Come celebrate with us at the Delta City Fourth of July celebration Liberty - A Musical Celebration of Freedom will be held at the Millard County Fair Building Tuesday July 2 and Wednesday July 3 at 7: 30 pm Admission is $ 00 per person or $500 a family Thursday July 4 Schedule of Events 6:00 am Sunrise Salute 7:00 am Breakfast in the Park am Children’s Parade - Main Street 9:30 am Main Parade - Main Street :00 am Patriotic Program - City Park 1:00 am on Booths Food Games Activities - City Park am Children’s Games - Ball Field at City Park pm Variety Show - City Park 1:00-00 pm Activities and Contests - City Park 7:00 pm Demolition Derby - Hinckley Rodeo Grounds Fireworks - Regional Park pm Dance - High School (By Cheerleaders) |
