created by Huntington from the 1890s through die early part of this century “Her autobiography is visual poetry on glass" Cary Jones said in the catalog that was published with a grant Bom the Utah Endowment for the Humanities Huntington who lost most of her hearing at age 4 due to scarlet fever used photography as a means of communication “expressing her love of life her sense of beauty md surprisingly a fine sense of humor “Humor in a collection of photography is relatively are for it seems that once behind the lens photographers assume that only serious matters are worth recording" Jones said Her images are light years beyond the standard for the day Even in modern times her work cm be startling and her use of photographic metaphor compel- ling “She was also s complex woman with the capability md courage to confront defects in society and in herself” Jones wrote "The portrait of a mm with his artificial legs lying on the floor beside his is in many respects a portrait of Huntington too It makes a strong statement about the reality of handicaps and the need to strip away illusions" “A Woman’s View” of 29 photographs is part of the Utah Arts Council’s Traveling Exhibition Program and is sponsored locally by the Library and the East Millard Fine Arts Guild Utah Arts Council provides schools museums and galleries throughout the state with a variety of
