EDITOR As mentioned last week I attended the 28th Annual National Newspaper Association Government Affairs Conference in Washington D C What can I say? It was an excellent conference as usual and I always enjoy seeing newspaper friends from across the United States The speaker this year was Senate Leader Robert Republican Dole Senator Howard M Senate Majority leader George Mitchell W'llliam S Sessions Director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation Secretary of Agriculture (vho’s name escapes me at the moment) William T Johnstone Assistant Postmaster General for the Government Relations Dept of the U S Postal Service David R Gergen Editor at Large for L' S News & Report and Mark Shields syndicated Washington Post columnist Two interesting items of the conference came from members The Dater’s whose daughter Gretchen was the Pan Am victim have started a group to get victim’s personal effects returned and to have information made available to the public about bomb threats and they were disseminating information The other was the firebombing of a newspaper office in New York The FBI have their hands full with the vestigation as the paper is a very active investigative reporting type paper but they were leaning toward it being triggered by an editorial written concernr ing “Satanic Verses” which the said was one of his milder pieces and dealt mostly with freedom of speech The paper however is not in an area which would lead one to think such an editorial would provoke such violence Anyway both items it really makes you think when these kinds of things happen to people you actually know We also toured the Naval Observatory I took lots of pictures but how creative can one get taking pictures of telescopes and computers It was an teresting tour but more from the learning standpoint rather than the visual Washington’s National Cathedral was also on the tour but I had a committee meeting so I had to skip that part of the tour Theater night was very impressive We went to the Eisenhower Theater at the Kennedy Center and saw “Steel Magnolias” starring June Lockhart and Barbara Rush thought it was cellent and am real curious to see how handle the movie version they We didn’t get to go to the White House this year the new administration can’t seem to get organized and is a ways off anyway The Embassy visited this year was Saudi Arabia They were very touchy about security so cameras were not allowed They did give a very nice presentation about their country and were candid with questions We also had a Potomac Dinner Cruise and were entertained by the “Capitol Steps” a group of congressional aides who perform in the manner of Mark Russell The was to Shirley and Berkeley Plantations and then on to I had been to Colonial Williamsburg Williamsburg before and enjoyed it This time I didn’t enjoy it so much It is a reconstruction and repair of one of setAmerica’s eariliest European tlements They have the wig shops printing shops book binders taverns etc which are as close to authentic as they can get However now that they boast over a millions visitors annually it has become very crowded more felt it pensive and too commercial had lost a lot of the quaintness I enbefore joyed All that was in the news while I was there was the killing spree DC's drug world was on they were having five killings a night The congress was on Delta Area Mrrd page 6 Fillmore Area Jrllrr Wilderness impacts economy Wilderness designation restricts the mining ability to create jobs in Utah The mining industry of Utah is concerned about the future of the State The industry wants to grow and create jobs but to do so must have access to the Public Lands and the mineral resources contained in those lands Utah is a Public Land State Approximately 80 percent of the lands in the State are owned or controlled by State andor Federal agencies The lands are for everyone’s use If State Lands are designated as wilderness and restricted to a singlepurpose use the mining industry cannot explore for or develop the mineral resources of the State The industry is limited in its ability to create new jobs and is forced to look elsewhere out of the state in search for new mining ventures Limiting the mining industries ability to grow within the State is to the detriment of Utah’s economy and every Motor Vehicle Schedule: Fillmore & Millard Delta weekdays County Assessor's offices 10:30 am Mondays Office Point Reflections Turning Voc Center Delta Manb 27 - the cost of hiring special assistance from the attorney general’s office - staff time within his own office - and the logistical costs of bringin paying ing witnesses expert witnesses mileage and other associated expenses “We’re in the process of putting a budget together for that” Peterson said “I’m asking for money to be put into my budget for the trial and for this additional position And there are some contingency funds we set up for litigation that we may be able to use” Peterson said the contingency funds were set up by the commission so that specific authorization would have to be sought before they could be applied If Peterson wants to continue the tra help after the end of the year he’ll have to ask the commission again “I must ask and justify” he said “I think that was prudent They made a good decision by authorizing it and by sunsetting it” Scruggs said the military has a right to work on a document without having to release drafts "There will be a full hcraing process” Scruggs said “He (Erickson) is just trying to build up a public hysteria so he can get a full head of steam going into the public hearing process” Erickson said he asked the Air Force for the documents before he approached the state but they turned him down Downwinders and the Deseret News have also failed to get the documents through the Freedom of Information Act “Where does the public right to know come in?” Erickson asked “We want to know how they picked Utah This has nothing to do with the privacy of individuals” a common reason for withholding documents Bangerter said he believes the Air Force is cooperating with him “We've received two or three updates in the past several months" he said “In my vipw we’re getting the straight story” 'Erickson is not satisfied He said he will appeal the governor's refusal to share the documents to the State Records Committee He will also appeal again to the Air Force by (note silly grin) Ken Rand (Editor's note: This fairy tale read by Media Man! is brought to you as a public service by these fine sponsors: Dow Chemical Morion Thiakol Hercules EI Dupont Boeing Lockheed General Motors Phillip Morris Colt and the the Pentagon Industries Evangelical Church for the Preservation of Our Sacred Cultural Social and Moral Heritage Reformed) Once upon a time ’way out West in Nice Valley there lived a farmer The farmer raised piggies bunnies chickies doggies goaties s sheepies horsies and other domestic critters of the variety for pets target practice and dinner The farmer had a wife and 26 kiddies They had plenty of food shelter and clothing They had cable TV They practiced good dental hygiene They were poor but they were very humble sedan One day a grey with black sidewall tires and little tiny hubcaps and a sign on the door that Motor Pool said “Government Use Prohibited Unless You’re Oliver North” drove up to the farmers poor but humble house in Nice Valley Out of the car stepped a handsome young man who wore shiney shoes aviator sunglasses and a shoulder holster under his nice suit He looked like Arnold Schwarzenegger in “The Terminator” “Greetings neighbor” the farmer said “How may we poor but humble folk help you?” “I’m here from the Government and I’m here to help you” the man said nervously scanning the parameter for snipers and hidden gun emplacements “Gracious” the farmer said “We’re ever so grateful for your friendly offer but we don’t need any help Thank you” With that the farmer turned to walk away “Hold it buddy” the kindly government agent called out drawing an UZI automatic pistol with laser and grenade range finder bayonet launcher attached from his shoulder holster and aiming it at the farmers back “lemme see some ID” The farmer looked around puzzled He scratched his head “ID?” he said “ID? I don’t have to show you no stinking ID I already know who I am” “But how do I know this is really your farm? How do I know you’re not the boogie man?” The agent spoke to his lapel microphone requesting a SWAT team of IRS agents be placed on Code Red Standby Attack Alert just in case “Ask me” the farmer said "That would never do” the government man said “If you were the lie you’d probably boogie man wouldn’t you?” The farmer allowed as how that might be so if he were indeed the boogie man Then he said brightly “But what would the boogie man want with my poor old dirt farm? There is nothing here in Nice Valley that would interest the boogie man” “You're wrong” the agent said smiling He put his gun away and motioned the farmer closer An chicken left abruptly under the agents glare (It later committed suicide by diving into a coyotes mouth It left a note begging forgiveness for undisclosed crimes against the state) The agent whispered to the farmer: “Our top secret study shows Nice Injuries were a big problem in the early years of aerobic execise classes she says A survey done in 1984 found that 75 percent of the instructors and 45 percent of the students had sustained injuries from their classes By 1987 surveys showed a reduction of injuries as instructors began switching from high to low impact aerobics The three most prominent certification agencies are: Dance Exer1) IDEA (International cise Association): This is primarily designed for persons who do not already have degrees in a physical education field To become certified you must pass a 3 Vi hour written test and hold a current CPR card Continuing education units are required every two years to renew certification 2) ACSM (The American College of Sports Medicine): It has four certifications for health fitness leaders health fitness instructors health fitness directors and aerobic dance instructors all requiring various degrees of academic The director’s certification training takes five years of experience and a master’s degree The dance instructors need 250 hours of teaching experience and must pass a written exam and hold a current CPR card and Fitness 3) AFAA (Aerobic Association of America): The AFAA differs from IDEA in that it both trains and certifies its members Certification requires a written exam and a practical demonstration exam Continuing education units are also required every two years for recertification You must also be CPR trained You should remember that certificaof excellence tion is no guarantee anymore than a driver’s license makes everyone a good driver However certification programs help lake some of the risk out of getting in shape a” man” “But if the boogie man will never think to look here why do need protection from the boogie man?” “Top secret” the agent said “Even the Aurora plastic model company doesn’t know about this project” his head The farmer scratched “But” puzzled “Look” the agent said losing patience “we’ll hold public hearings in due time In accordance with the Lewis Carroll Act of 1969 you’ll get a chance to say any stupid thing you want to say before we ignore it And we’ll give you all the information we think you need to know in order to decided to do the patriotic thing whatever we decided that is And don’t worry about being thrown off your land We have no such plans And when we do you’ll get a chance to protest before we ignore you" A low rumbling was heard The ground began to shake “Besides” the agent said “as you can see we're already here” A submarine surfaced in the farmer’s north 40 knocking over a cow The rest as they say is history Plans to deploy the stealth sub have but the been delayed by the drought of the Navy believes modification MOTSOT (More Of The Same Old in the secretly Thing) Yellowstone Fires during the summer will provide a solution of 1988 “The Gun” frontline Nicknamed troops found they could write their names in the snow with it The Navy is asking Congress to authorize another S30 billion to test the theory A new user fee will be needed to pay for it Meanwhile a bill to authorize compensation for the displaced farmers of Nice Valley has again been killed in committee The End (Editor’s note again: The above fairy tale is strictly an exercise in futility It arhas no intrinsic value whatsoever tistic educational entertainment moral nutritional or otherwise You are invited to completely ignore Your Government Thanks You) I AMERICAN V CANCER ?
