Show Millard Business of the Week Pam Freeman is committed to promoting pioneer arts and crafts by Dawn Carder Remember all the “neat” items your mother grandmother great grandmother and countless others used to make? Things like woven and braided hand rugs quilts spun garments lap robes etcs? All you crafts people and lovers of the crafts take heart for Pam Freeman of Fillmore is committed to both saving and promoting pioneer arts and crafts A native of Cadillac Michigan Pam says she claims the whole state of Michigan as home for her dad was a state policeman and the family did a great deal of traveling Following high school graduation Pam attended Lake Superior State College (now a university) in Sault St Marie There she majored m Engineering Technology Drafting and Design It was during her college years that Pam joined the LDS Church A missionary couple with whom she became friends invited Pam to “come live with us in Provo” young gal from Michigan packed her bags and moved to Utah For ten months Pam lived m Provo It was there at a church dance that she met Jerry Freeman of Fillmore-tman who was to become her husband Six years ago the two married and established their home in Jerry’s home town “There was not much need for an engineer in Fillmore” Pam said with I decided to pura smile “Therefore sue my hobby which includes just about any handcraft there is” She was so busy sewing spinning quilting knitting and tatting that her handmade items began to accumulate “Why not open a shop?” she wondered Open a shop is exactly what Pam Freeman has done Handmades by Pamela located downstairs in Ye Olde Capitol Mini Mall on Fillmore’s Main Street is basically an outlet for Pam’s own crafts There are and will continue some consignment to be however items for sale “I am trying to stick to as many original creations as possible” stated Pam “And I am aiming for high quality I want to help the public especially tourists see all the beautiful work here I will be promoting local crafts people” of that production Commenting used to be a woman’s handcrafts Pam says that measure of she has always been fascinated by history “I like the pioneering spirit— that spirit that says ‘I won’t be held back' I really enjoy that'” she said enthusiastically In Handmades by Pamela one finds many beautiful expertly made handcrafts There are stuffed dolls and crocheted animals (on consignment) hats wall decorations made from place mats wall plaques different types of and towel holders baby quilts a variety of Christmas wreaths and tree decorations lap robes pot holders and home made fudge Pam will do queen and king sized quilts by special order Within a couple of weeks bulk popourri will be added to the stock and the candy selection will be - LSPS County Rita Robinson -- us" Rita was born in Pueblo Colorado the fifth of seven children in her family Actually she has a twin brother Ronald but she claims number five position in the family because “I was born first” panded to include some of the real kinds Appearing to have an abundance of energy both mental and physical Pam She will is ever thinking and planning conduct spinning workshops in the future when she plans to teach the basics in wool preparation carding and spinning on drop spindles There will also be workshops presented on making braided rag rugs On July 4 Pam will be giving a spinning demonstration on the walking wheel at the museum and she intends to give other When Rita was eight years old her family moved to Belen New Mexico The schooling during the elementary years at St Mary’s is still remembered as a major influence on her life From St Mary’s Rita went on to and later graduated from Belen High School Then she met her true love Tom Robinson and six months later they were married After their marriage the Robinsons moved to Las Vegas There Rita attended and later graduated from the Hollywood Beauty School She with schooling behind her became a licensed beautician and went to work in a beauty shop While in Las Vegas Rita worked m two different shops doing tints frosts perms cuts etc During the time they lived in Nevada Rita and Tom became parents of Kelly now 17 and J Cruz now 13 In 1975 the family moved to Hinckley and there they remain The kids naturally are in school and Tom works for Continental Lime demonstrations throughout the summer “I feel very strongly about learning” Pam stated “If only one person learns from me he or she can then teach someone else In this way the ” pioneer crafts will be kept alive Although she misses the green of Michigan Pam says that she has grown to love living in Fillmore She finds that she is more and more accepting the rough beauty and she has learned to appreciate the beauty of the desert “I love the mountains for they provide security and beauty” she observed "I’m basically a country person enjoying the freedom of going out on horses” Last year Pam participated in a 25 mile endurance race an activity she had long dreamed of tackling The mother of two sons ages 15 and 4 Pam finds many activities fill her busy at her days She is naturally various crafts and her responsibilities as wife and mother Pam has served on the County Fair Board she has participated m Children’s Theater and she is a member of the East Millard Fine Arts Guild On Sundays she teaches the CT R A class in the LDS Church With enthusiasm and determination Pam Freeman is promoting pioneer crafts and the work of local craftsmen and women in Handmades by Pamela as well as in the entire Millard County area Items for sale will be changing regularly so stop in often and look Winter hours are Tuesday around through Saturday noon to 6 p m The summer hours will be from 10 a m to 6 pm Tuesday through Saturday Don’t be surprised if in the future you find Pam in pioneer garb!
