as the first moose ever to be transplanted into Southern Utah stepped from the Division of Wildlife Resources trailer near Fish Lake The moose proFeb 19 through gram continued resulting in a total of 28 moose being transplanted from Summit County to Wildlife Resources Sevier County Richfield Managers Norm Bowden and John Kimball Ogden were hoping to transplant about 25 moose with cows a ration of one bull to every Their expectations were met at the 28 moose were 7 bulls (4 matures 2 yearlings and one bull calf) and 21 cow moose (16 matures 2 yearlings and 3 heifer calves) Although the moose averaged costing between $1200 and $1500 to the largest nonbudget cost transplant was the helicopter expense of locating drugging and transporting the moose to transport vehicles This money was derived through the “checkoff” on the unsuccessful big game application form now is DWR’s biggest concern moose survival Heavy illegal kill on the 1973 transplant in the Manti National Forest near Scofield has stopped population growth on a herd that could have been a viable huntable herd by now Bowden states that the majority of illegal kills come from people who believe a moose is about to charge them or people fail to identify the A New Cooler From Down Under An award of $1000 will be given to anyone in Utah who provides Utah Small Cities Inc with a lead that results in a company They had a deep sea fishing experience and visited some alligator farms Once captured the moose must be air lifted to the loaded area prior to trucking the moose to its new home animal thinking it is a deer or an elk Since our Utah moose have no real predators they basically have no fear of man This combined with it’s is often mistaken for the curiosity charging moose encounter that Bowden was taling about The Utah moose (Alces alces shirasi) is the smallest of the four subspecies of moose Since it is less numerous it is the most sought after subspecies of moose in the world explaining why the Division of Wildlife Resources annual moose bid permit has sold as high as $16000 Money from this permit also helped pay for tranpslant costs Since four of the transplanted moose will be wearing radio collars their movements will be intensely monitored providing the data needed to actually determine habitat preference in Southern Utah All sightings should be reported to Norm Bowden in Richfield the DWR office in Cedar City or the local conservation officer Sighting reports should include the color and the number of the ear tag if possible 80 percent of the Approximately cow moose
