Special awards were presented to the Constitution Coloring Contest winners at Delta Middle School this week Two of the winners were from Rosmarie Nodin’s sixth grade class and one was named a winner from Mrs Frandsen’s fifth grade class On hand to make the presentations were American Legion sponsors: Ray of First Vice Commander Brown District 6 and also Commander of US Post 135 Teddy L Nielson District 6 Commander and Raymond L Smith Second of District 6 Mr Brown requested that the picture be taken in front of the large US flag which hangs in the foyer of the Delta High School The flag was donated to the school by the family of World War I veteran Parnell Hinckley a former resident of Millard County ROB FOWLES shoots for two aiding in Delta's win against Union in the state championship competition by Kerry Watson The Millard Eagles boys’ basketball team topped off a fun filled season this last week as they brought home a trophy from the state tournament They also won three games and lost one at the state tournament held at Weber State The Eagles entered the 12 team on Wednesday as they tournament played the Juab Wasps in a must win game The loser of this game would be eliminated from the tournament The Eagles also started off the Region 10 tournament by facing the Wasps The Eagles won at Region This time around it posted the same result as the Eagles pulled out a big victory and advanced to the final eight of the state tournament They now faced a double elimination eight team tournament The Eagles now faced the 2nd place finisher from Region nine the Lehi Pioneers The Eagles could never get going through this game as Lehi led most of the way Millard’s pressure defense was real good and kept them close through the whole game as they only gave p 56 pc ints but on offense they could only score 47 points This gave Millard their only loss of the tournament The Eagles offensive load was carried by Shawn Rushton who scored 21 points including a momentum changing slam dunk For Lehi Scott Price with 20 points and AI Peters 13 with points led the way This put the Eagles up against their rivals the Delta Rabbits in the consolation bracket This game was a must win situation for both teams as the loser was eliminated from the tournament The Eagles also had revenge upon their minds as they lost last league game to the Rabbits The Eagles opened up an early lead in this game and never looked back They played with great teamwork On the defensive end they only gave up 46 point and on the offensive end 10 people contributed to the Eagles 64 points Leading them were Doug Shawn with 12 points Dearden Rushton and Matt Dastrup with 11 points and Scott Kessler with 10 points That allowed the Eagles to go on and play the Manti Templars for the consolation championship The Eagles also met the Templars at Region for the 3rd and 4th place game At region the Eagles came out on top by one point This time Manti had revenge on their mind and it also had a lot of pride Manti’s volved For the Templars coach Wilbur Braithwaite was coaching his last game after 37 years at the coaching position But the Eagles came out ready They had a trophy in mind and a grand finale for the four seniors It was a close game all the way through but the Eagles proved to be just too much in the end as they won Leading the way for by a final of the Eagles were the seniors who all had a great game as well as an outstanding ended up with 18 Rushton Shawn year points and Mark Charlesworth put in 17 points Manti was led by Ralph Squires and Russel Mickelson who each had 15 points West School William Dutson served as chairman Rhonda Harrison assisted with rules and introductions Swimming pool news Deb Sabey did it! In December Deb decided she needed to get into shape and that swimming would be the way she would do it Deb joined the West Millard Pool’s 50 Mile Club and set forth on her goal It was interesting to watch her progress When Deb first started swimming she was exhausted after about 3 to 4 laps but she didn’t give up her goal was 50 miles by Leap Year Day February 29 The week of Feb 22 Deb still had eight miles to go but instead of swimming 3 or 4 laps at a time like when she started in December Deb was swimming 2 miles (72 laps) at a time Well she stuck with it and accomplished her goal because on Monday Feb 29 Deb Finished her first 50 miles of accumulative swimming at the West Millard Pool Toni has over 35 little taking swimming lessons this session She will be teaching three more sessions and then will take the summer off The next winter swimming lesson session will start Monday March 28 If a person plans on swimming a lot at the pool a 100 percent nylon swimming suit is the way to go Chlorine does not effect nylon but it sure plays havoc with lycra and spandex Lycra and spandex is the stretchy part of a suit which is actually a rubberized material Chlorine loves to eat rubber You say that you can’t find a 100 percent nylon swim suit Well don’t fret any longer The pool is not in the swim suit business but it does have access to catalogs which have 100 percent nylon suits available Pool’s 5th Annual Plant Sale This is the sale everyone waits for every year Saturday April 9 between the hours of 9 am and 12 noon plants of all varieties will be on sale in the West Millard Pool patio for very reasonable prices There will be ground covers perrenials herbs shrubs and trees These plants are donated by ul gardeners of this area They w ill be freshly dug and ready for planting the same day After school 1988 Baseball & Softball registration to begin The West Millard Recreation Department is announcing the organization of the 1988 baseball and All interested softball leagues dividuals in Delta and surrounding areas must register from March 10 to March 31 from 10 am to 5 pm Monday through Friday at the Regional Park 81 South Manzanita Ave in Delta Payment must be
