Subdivision j jjDelta City library News I An exhibition of drawings and paintings entitled “Utah Art of the Depression” will be on display at Delta City Library from March 15 to April 15 1988 This exhibit was curated by Dan E Burke from the State Fine Art Collection for the Utah Arts Council’s The Traveling Exhibition Program works represent many of the Utah artists who participated in the Federal Art Projects of the 1930s During the period following the market “crash” of 1929 times were unquestionably hard for everybody As the Depression years began to envelope the nation the Federal government itiated the Public Works of Art Project (PWAP) and the Works Progress Federal Art Project Administration (WPAFAP) to assist with the unemployment crisis Utah was willing and anxious to join in partnership with the federal government and out of this partnership developed the Utah Art Project Under the capable leadership of Judy Lund and Elzy J Bird the Art Project in Utah became a successful and viable program for many Utah artists The aim of the Art Project was to work toward an integration of the arts with Imthe daily life of the community plicit in this goal was a strong belief that the government should work with the artists in raising artistic standards and increasing cultural awareness “Utah Art of the Depression” hibits a wide range of subject matter which can be divided into three categories The first category consists of scenes and figures from Utah’s historical past The second category is comprised of scenes representing Utah in the 1930s And the third category represents subject matter taken from a documentary prespective The works are boldly represented and depict the intense feelings and emotions that were generated by this period in American history The Traveling Exhibition Program is a statewide outreach service of the Utah Arts Council The program provides schools museums and galleries throughout the state with a variety of exhibitions For further information on the Traveling Exhibition Program conat tact the Visual Arts Program Salt Lake City Utah This program is supported by a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts Washington DC and by programming funds from the Utah Arts Council The West Millard area was treated to an exceptional program on Friday Feb 26 at the Delta High Auditorium when a Magical Variety Show was This cast of compresented munity members filled the evening with music and song This well attended event seemed to be appreciated by all who were there There were dance numbers ranging from clogging by the Rocky Mountain dance routine by Cloggers a the Supersensationals and a fine individual dance by Andrea Dutson Instrumentals included a crisp trumpet by Jane Stanworth Jay and Cindy treated the audience to classical piano There was comedy in the well performed numbers by Russell May Ken Lebbon and Roy and Karen Lisa Nielson’s very humorous reading about a very unusual family was Mary Slaughter Bunker of Sutherland originally honored her at a party for her 80th birthday February 21 1988 She is a resident of the Parkview Nursing Home in Bountiful Utah There was a program and a husband Robert L Steele was hired as Clerk of the Millard County Board of Education Her first few years here were spent caring for a sick child Lois’ first employers were Harold and Ruth Done Her work for them was in the capacity of bookkeeper She and Ruth became fast friends and they shared many good watermelons together!
