pages at home Recently the students passed the 800000 page mark in their quest to put the principal on the roof Principal Ferguson challenged the students to do a million pages of home reading as the school year began last September He promised that if they met his challenge he would move his office up on the roof ‘‘I didn’t think they could do it” commented Ferguson “It was meant to be a challenge that would be very difficult to achieve” Principal Ferguson and the Fillmore Elementary faculty place a lot of emphasis on home and recreatibnal reading “Much of our program is designed to make reading an enjoyable experience for our students We feel that a student who can learn to enjoy reading has a much better chance of learning to become a good reader” Ferguson stated Faculty and staff reading has also counted towards the total Last month the faculty and staff challenged the 4th grade students to a weekend reading challenge Both groups read over 9000 pages but the 4th graders outread the faculty and staff by 101 pages In a similar weekend challenge the faculty and staff were outread by the 3rd grade by over 1000 pages The students have been inspired in their home reading by the example of the dedicated teachers and staff Daily messages from the principal have also encouraged the students to keep up the reading at home The song by the Drifters “Up On the Roof is often played on the school’s intercom to remind students to keep reading to get the principal “up on the roof Proclamation Whereas the survival rate for cancer is increasing at an encouraging rate and there
