Page 3 Staff by Dawa Carder The public may think that Sue runs the show in the Chronicle Progress office but that idea is somewhat of a misnomer The truth of the matter is that Riley Wood keeps us all including the Chronicle cats in line Even when she was “stuck” at home with the flu she kept at her work and checked in on and with us via the telephone And we often found that we had to touch base with her just on general principles! Guess we just plain missed her presence and wanted her to know how much she was missed Somehow one assumes and rightly so that Riley has always been determined and energetic She was born and raised outside of Delta the only child of Joseph and Annie Jones She therefore had various chores helping out by milking cows caring for baby lambs etc She reports that it was her pleasure to ride a horse to school for five years while attending the elementary grades from Delta Following graduation High School Riley lived in California for approximately five years There she worked at Cudahy Packing House and attended Filbin Beauty School becoming a specialized operator and licensed to do permanents styling and manicures She also attended Dictaphone School where she learned to And in Califoroperate dictaphones nia as in Utah Riley was active in LDS church work California may have been nice but Riley decided it was time to return home to Delta When she got back she initially went to work for Brooklawn Her Creamery as a butter wrapper next position was as cook and waitress for Maude Byron in the Little Gem Cafe and then she worked for Joe Mercer at Delta Drug as a clerk Riley Ever busy Riley served four and one half years as receptionist secretary and auto tax assessor in the Millard County Offices From there she took a job with Delta Milling Company and then for what is now Intermountain Farmers Association In the spring of 1956 Riley left her job to care for her mother who was with the seriously ill Interspersed various professional assignments and caring for her mother Riley served for as many years secretarytreasurer of the Millard County Junior Livestock Show She compiled a 50 year history scrapbook of the show’s organization and activities from 1930 through 1981 (No show was held in 1932) About that she says “It was lots of fun” After caring for her mother it was back to work for Riley For seventeen years she served as general office manager bookkeeper and nurse assistant for Dr M A Lyman “I very much enjoyed the association and friendship of the patients” she stated At the conclusion of services to the doctor Riley typed Dudley D Craft’s book History of the Sevier Bridge Reservoir To do this she went to the Chronicle Progress office learned how to set type on the machine and proceeded to type the book That experience led to a job working for Sue Dutson as typsctter for the newspaper Wells retired from service to Delta City in 1979 after dedicating 30 years of his life to his work Riley kept busy at the newspaper office for four years setting type For the next two years she did paste up work picture PMTs ad billing legal and notary work (Riley has been a Notary Public for Wood Riley met and married Wells Wood Wells left Pace Motor Company in February 1942 and went to Salt Lake City to work as a tool fitter on bullet machines for Remington Arms Riley joined him in May of the same year and they remained “up north” until the end of World War II While living in Salt Lake Riley served as a Primary Teacher Ladies MIA Young Counselor and ward ogranist After Remington Arms closed Wells worked as garage foreman at the Naval Supply Depot in Clearfield At the end of the war the Wood family returned to Delta Riley went to work full time spending one half of each day serving as bookkeeper for Ashby Inc and the otl er half of each day as bookkeeper for Peterson Motor Company years) July will mark twelve years Riley has been with the Chronicle Progress Every morning she answers the phone sells and takes ads does legal proof of legal billings and some ad publication she makes sure the And billing Chronicle cats Tweedy and Sylvester are well tended! On July 23 1982 Wells Wood suffered a paralytic stroke that changed both his and Riley’s lives For awhile she took care of her husband in their home When she was no longer able to do so Wells moved to the West Millard Extended Care facility where he remains in residence Due to her many responsibilities cluding at least two daily visits with Wells Riley now works only part time at the Chronicle Progress However she manages to accomplish more in a few hours than many of us do in the entire day “I enjoy my job” she commented “I enjoy the association with the public and the staff and I like doing bookwork and accounting” Although she hasn’t done it for sometime Riley counts horseback riding as one of her favorite activities Others are playing the piano having friends call and dancing She began playing the piano for Sunday School at the ripe old age of 14 and she spent many years affiliated with organist and secretarial work in the LDS Church here in Delta Wells and Riley are the parents of Raelene Dekker and Larry Wood both of whom now reside in California They have four grandchildren and five great grandchildren Spunk determination and compassion are all qualities Riley possesses and qualities that make her very dear and special to the entire staff of the Chronicle Progress And she keeps us jumping!
