It started about a year ago with one of the local Then we ministers here in Delta thought that it was just an isolated incident But now it seems to be happening to an ever increasing number of people There appears to be a one person campaign in progress to many of our Delta residents This campaign is in the form of letter writing The letters do not come in the form of chain letters though They appear to be attacking the religious belief of the recipient The letters are aimed at the Christian faith and are being sent to individuals of all faiths in this valley Taxpayer disagrees with Commissioner Kerr The Utah Commissioner of Higher Education Rolfe Kerr produced an credible analysis of the recent tax hikes in his article on July 8 (Deseret News My View) In it he praised the legislature and the fargovernor for being statesmanlike sighted and courageous in their enactment of the largest tax increase in the history of the state He decried the “haughty” letters “angry” phone calls and the signatures on tax limitation is not increasing And farsightedness taxes when the state is in the middle of a serious economic downturn What is particularly curious is Mr Kerr’s view of economics He tells us that “We should recognize that the tax increases of this past legislative session did not even replace the losses in revenue incurred by the downturn in our economy” He assumes that by raising taxes we should be stimulated to higher productivity As The Wall Street Journal pointed out specifically referring to Utah high taxes eventually drive productive people and firms out of state A trend that has already begun While it is nice to learn of Kerr’s efforts to cut waste in higher education it is important to remember that it was President Chase Peterson of the University of Utah who organized one of this past session’s largest and most effective lobbying efforts for the purpose of raising our taxes It was under Mr Peterson’s direction that the staff all of and faculty of this institution whom are public employees paid with our tax dollars were used in that lobbying effort Finally it must be terrible having to put up with the taxpaying citizens who are trying to get their leaders to listen All this business to their problems about petitions and signatures is hard to control And what would happen if the voters of the state actually did have a say in how much taxes they pay? Heaven forbid! Kent Davis Salt Lake City petitions He painted those who resist increased taxes as being ingrates who want more but don’t want to pay for it He believes that the vast majority of our citizens are standing “solidly behind government leaders for the actions they took” (Despite a recent KSLDeseret News poll that shows a majority of citizens support all four of the tax petitions being circulated) Kerr climb down Commissioner from your ivory tower Statesmanship is not “cutting all the deals” for a tax increase before the legislature meets Courage is not caving in to special interest groups and then making sure that the new taxes are passed by a majority thus prohibiting the possibility of taking the issue to the voters of the state in a referendum profession Fillmore & pm & Delta Wed 9 pm Renewals any working day at Millard County Offices Sept 1 Prenatal classes Fillmore Communito ty Medical Center call register Sept 3 Annual membership meeting Civic Arts Council 8 pm Fillmore Library Sept 4 Delta High School Hello dance 9 pm cafeteria Lynette Dutson and David Kent LeamPackard wedding reception ington Ward pm Sept 4 & 5 Corn Creek Mule Association 2nd annual Mule Rendezvous Fillmore Fairgrounds Sept 5 - 20 Archery Elk Season Sept 6 Elder Kirk A Watts mission report Delta 3rd Ward 2:30 pm Fireside talk by Lee Nelson author Millard County The Chronicle Progress USPS Mta DM mnr ntaitdif PuMMOf Mta LkM Editor Publisher Dutson Susan Editorial Dawn Carder at Large Reporter Advertising Sales 8 Legal Billing Riley Wood Julie Ward Goertz Design Fillmore Office Manager Evelyn Mallet Greathouse Deb Accounts Receivable Circulation Ward Julie Goertz CirculationComp CirculationProduction Rita Robinson Commercial of County PO $1100 Copy Send Box 249 Delta Mu Mamrr DUWl PUitfcHWG f- Just for Today How long can I keep doing the things I’ve been doing? feel intimidated or threatened by it please bring the letter and mailing envelope to the post office as soon as possible I would like to start a file with the Postal Inspection Service on these They are America’s trees Seven years By Dennis Hinkamp Consumer Information Writer Utah State University Seven years ago when I arrived in Utah and started writing this column the Great Salt Lake was receding the governor was a Democrat and I was troduced to a Utah delicacy called zucchini pineapple Well you know what happened to the lake and the governor Now my home economist friends tell me zucchini pineapple has been replaced by zucchini mandarin orange Some things change some don’t As is my annual practice I like to ventory the best worst and ridiculous consumer developments of the past year Best new product: windshield shades When first saw them in California a year ago I thought they were another silly West Coast trend However I discovered they are inexpensive and they work I’ve melted tapes shoes and had aerosol cans blow up in my car before I got one of these things Worst new product: Read window signs These were a silly West Coast trend that spread Some states are now outlawing them because they create a blindspot in drivers’ rear view vision I don’t care what the driver in front of me “has on board” or does for a hobby Worst advertisements: Any advertisement seen at a theater Movies were once the only escape from advertising I read that the next great advertising market is video tape rentals Many of them already contain movie previews but if they start containing product advertisements they ought to be required to carry advertising warning labels Best advertisements: Spuds McKenzie the light beer dog Light beer is a silly product to begin with so why not promote it with a dog that looks like a pig We’ve had enough of the aging athlete mountain stream aged barley malt doubletalk to last us a lifetime It had to happen: Starting in October there will be a magazine called “Divorce” which bills itself as the “magazine for people starting over” I can hardly wait to see what kind of ads they run The next cabbage patch kid: Coming to stores everywhere for Christmas (I predict) will be “Telly Tater the video vegetable” As you might have guessed Telly is a couch potato that comes with its own burlap potato sack home as well as care and feeding instructions Its mouth is designed to hold your television guide Wish I’d thought of it first Proof the universe is expanding: The average size 10 dress in 1970 had a 25 inch waistline Today the average size 10 has a 28 inch waistline Proof that people are in too big a hurry: microwave popcorn the Reader’s Digest Bible velcro anything windows for everything Proof that people have too much Flavored bottled water money: pet cemeteries answering machines Gloria Vanderbilt and Paul Newman salad dressings Proof that idle minds are the devil’s play toys: zucchini mandarin orange Equine Times by Kim Redo air regarding the A controversial stallion issue clouds the horse world Two factions constitute the opposing arguments On one side we have the stallion owners Each individual owner believes his animal to be of the finest breed quality worthy of inclusion in a On the other improvement program hand the proponents of the “too many stallions” theory postulate that gelding more stud colts will solve any existing and future discrepancies concerning what they believe to be stallion over Before the dissension population escalates beyond the bickering stages must be understanding a mutual reached Advocates of gelding need to realize that the simplest solution to the problem lies in front of their noses Leave the stallion owners alone It’s that simple Encourage the proud owners to promote their stallions Surround the suggestion with hints of syndication If stallion numbers continue to increase the horse population will consist of Think of the astonishing varieties ramifications and the contributions to society owner The unfortunate spends time daydreaming of life as a cowboy Ask anyone who has just finished watching one of the Duke’s westerns Of course to be a cowboy one must own a horse for many city folks sole ownership of a flashy and rugged cow pony remains a if every stallion However dream owner were to sell mail order shares to these city people think how happy they would be The entrepreneur of Sak’s Fifth Avenue could proudly boast of his one ownership of Mighty Blazer the super stud and become the envy of the business world the from Soon everyone city would feel part American cowboy The exchange of revenue would become overwhelming Mail order sales would soar In addition the veterinary and medical professions would reap untold benefits Veterinary services would be in demand to repair animal injuries incurred from loose or unruly stallions during horse gatherings Fussing stallions also precede mishaps volving human trauma At one time owning a stallion was reserved for the Now everyone brings knowledgeable one or two to every public equine event Statistically speaking the opportunities for profit expand daily Hospitals and doctors would be assured of treating an onslaught of these stallion handlers following every horse function Visit an open horse show in your area Watching the stallion handlers offers as much excitement as rodeo When word gets around bullriding people will flock to the horse shows just for the sideshow For example picture an average horse show The horses in the ring line up for judging The spectators in the stands listen for the class results The next class is the two year old stallions at halter Bystanders in anticipation of some action eagerly buy up the burgers and candy bars at the concessions Joe an exhibitor awaits the class call by the area gate Joe turns his back to his colt to gab with an admiring passerby The inadvertently loosened lead gains the colt’s attention He snaps at the line misses but catches a mouthful of Joe’s back Joe jumps spooking the colt The colt backs into another contestant A chain reaction spurts into action The In less than two spectators stand minutes two horses require veterinary attention Joe needs a tetanus shot for the bite and the second handler needs because Joe’s colt landed on toe his foot The third fellow down the line spilled grape drink on his special show shirt necessitating the services of the dry cleaners The commotion might have doubled had more entered and been standing at the gate Voile We have created a source of income for the vet the doctor the concessions and the cleaners We have also constructed a spectator market Most horse shows currently offer free admittance but with excitement like this who wouldn’t pay two bucks to get in? The ever present possibility of a squall enhances the thrill Confirmed entries of more stallions would definitely draw more spectators The increasing number of stallions at equine events represents the stallion Ropings trail rides and population Match backyards contain stallions making is easy and affordable for mare owners Today everyone can raise horses The breed fees often are less than what the BLM charges to adopt a wild horse and the quality of the foal is the same registered studs of any size shape and color can be booked for under one hundred fifty dollars Most of these even have a Joe Reed or a Kelso relative somewhere along the line Of course the foals sired by such blue blood studs will be worth a potential fortune Watch out BLM! You may have to decrease the adoption fees In all seriousness the stallions which flood the market promote variety encourage business transactions and keep horse Every gatherings lively American needs to own a horse as a reminder of his heritage At the rate that we are producing stallions the purchase price of any horse may reach fifty to one hundred dollars Prices like that will not only allow people to own a horse but will keep horse trainers busy In view of all the excitement possible I say leave the stallion owners alone! Dear John Letters column is presented as a community service of Intermountain Health Care and is written by John Waterbury Letters or responses may be sent to him at This Intermountain Health Care 36 South State Sheet Salt Lake City Utah 841T1 By John Waterbury For parents or drug using kids Dear John Both of my sons are using drugs and it’s destroying my family I don’t know what to do I’m not sure anyone does We have always been a very respectable family involved in the Church and the community and our family has always been something very special to us But recently everything is changing My husband and I are always angry at each other and we aren’t the ones with the problem It’s our sons! Home is not a place I even want to be any more Do you have any idea what I’m talking about? Does anyone? Angry and Defeated Dear A & D too many people Unfortunately know what you’re talking about It’s an illness that is spreading across the It’s the family illness of country adolescent chemical dependency And unless you get some help for your sons and for yourself and your husband the future looks rather bleak To be more specific let me forecast the future: As parents of chemically dependent adolescents you will try to use logic and rationality to deal with them but find that you become increasingly ineffective and your responses increasingly more emotional You will tell them to act more responsibly but then take the responsibility away from them You will be aware of the increasing gulf that is developing between you and them and efforts will be made unsuccessfully to close that gap by providing money cars etc As the problems increase in frequency and severity you will tend to argue with your spouse regarding appropriate disciplinary measures thereby creating additional stress in the family but not solving the problem Often one spouse will become more dominant and the other more passive as the dysfunction increases You will grow increasingly more angry at your chemically dependent adolescent and at yourself for having allowed such problems in the first place Eventually you will tell them to get 1 out so you won’t have to look at them Then you’ll spend all night looking for them to bring them home You will tell them to stop feeling sorry for themselves but then make them feel sorry for what they’ve done Out of frustration you will make idle threats but then fail to follow through thereby teaching them not to take you seriously At times you will vent your anger on the other children in the family and end up feeling even worse because of the guilt that results You will refuse to tolerate any further disrespect or emotional abuse but because you are unaware of the techniques to succesfully resolve the situation you will fail to take the necessary corrective measures As feelings of love and trust diminish you will experience feelings of wanting to hurt your chemically dependent child As you grow increasingly frustrated by your inability to control the situation you will experience loss of confidence and loss of self esteem Other children in the family will grow resentful because of your lack of attention and apparent lack of caring This will tend to create additional problems of anger resentment depression and emotional withdrawal in all family members After trying everything you know you will resign yourself to your fate and simply wait for your chemically dependent adolescents to reach the age when they finally leave home You can avoid such a gloomy scenario by getting your kids into a chemical dependency treatment center that has a strong family component Without this type of assistance you may be in jeopardy of losing everything I would also recommend going to Alanon and Toughlove You’ll find a tremendous groups (amount of support from people who have been there CONFIDENTIALLY: As people grow older some grow richer some grow wiser but most just grow older |
