Show USPS Millard County Than Apr 9 1987 - Page 7 SS9S$SSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS9 Delta North Elementary In The News Petersen and Warnick earn top prizes Mark Petersen and Gregg Warnick won top honors in the Central Utah Sterling Scholar categories of social science and vocational education Darnee Dutson and Cindy Bunker became runners-uin music and home ec Twelve Sterling Scholar candidates from DHS competed for the coveted at North Sanpete on scholarships March 30 Sue Miller math Joyce Jackson art JD general Wendy Stanworth Pelaez Tami foreign language business DeGraw Trudy Young English Des Renich drama and Julie science also Lightner represented Delta High against stiff competition from eleven other high schools The scholarships earned by the two winners extends full tuition that is renewable to any college in Utah With the scholarship the winner also receives a cash award of $250 Each contestant was interviewed by three judges and asked questions pertaining to his or her subject Mark Petersen said the interview wasn’t too difficult and added “We talked about everything from hunting geese to chasing polar bears in Alaska The judges really didn’t put me on the spot” Mark also showed the judges a thick portfolio documenting his achis high complishments throughout school career Gregg Warnick said “I was surprised that the judges didn’t ask that many questions They really just looked at my portfolio” Both Gregg and Mark plan to attend SUSC Mark's advice to students who are thinking about competing as Sterling Scholars is “Be serious about it If you compete with the attitude of wanting to win you probably will” Gregg’s advice “Get involved in the subject you are thinking about by taking as many classes as possible” yvy 4 Hu yrv C - M CARRIE ANDERSON Vr-J- y and Susan help put finishing touches Conference Day that will be held Finlinson on decorations for on April 7 FBLA makes showing at state event Academic competition can be as rigorous as athletic events when the competition includes all the schools That’s what 13 across the state Business members of the Future Leaders of America (FBLA) found out at the state tests held in Salt Lake City 3 and 4 April The students practiced after school twice a week before attending the meet Tanisia Heath said “Vying with the 4A and 3A schools is kind of scary” On Friday the students took tests lasting one and two hours on subjects ranging from typing and shorthand to computer programing Even more frightening than taking the tests was listening to the announcement of the winners in each division KATHY MINCER Brian Holman took third place in computer applications and fifth place in data processing Brian said that the test required him to write a buisness inventory computer program Jodi Walker placed eighth in word processing and Sherri Hare placed eighth in Shorthand I Voting delegates Shellie Anderson and Tami DeGraw had the opportunity to cast ballots for next year’s officers The FBLA members will compete in region on April 28 at Snow College “I feel the students are ready to go region and place higher than they did at state” said Mrs Thompson FBLA advisor demonstrating weaving at Delta North Third graders experience an art from the past On Tuesday March 31 1987 the third graders at Delta North Elementary were privileged to a visit from Mrs Kathy Mincer Mrs Mincer a former resident of Arizona entertained the group with a demonstration on weaving and spinning She showed the more advanced ways to spin fibers by the use of the spinning wheel and the less advanced method of using a hip spindle commonly-useby the Navajo Indians She was taught these skills from very experienced weavers in Arizona Having woven for 6 years and lear European Smorgasbord in Mrs Domingo's fourth grade class enjoyed a European Smorgasbord Wednesday afternoon The class has been studying Europe and each student completed a report on his favorite European country To finish the unit each student brought a special dish from his country Everyone enjoyed the feast including Miss STUDENTS ning from the experts Mrs Mincer had an array of items she had woven in the She also told the past on display children how to clean and dye fibers such as wool cotton and silk The students were amazed at the amount of time it took to make one article beginning from the rough fiber to the yarn to the woven fabric to the finished article Delta North’s Third Grade would like to thank Mrs Mincer for sharing her time and wonderful talent by Delna Bliss Two soloists play for state judges Solo and ensemble competition for the band will be held Friday April 10 Woodscross High School 'Ttr qualify' for this' competition students must receive a superior rating of a “one” at region Delta High School had two qualifyHiley Bedwell a ing band students senior and Brett Wardle a Hiley will be playing a trumpet and will be accompanied by Kathy Anderson who received a rating of “one minus” at region Playing “In the Hall of the Mountain King” will be Brett Wardle on the tuba He has high hopes for the performance and said “It’s an easy song so I guess I should do OK” at sophomore JOIN UP!
