Smith Science Writer Utah State University News for parents: Indications are you not only have to tell fidgeters to “sit still” you have to feed them more to support their habit I did my share of wiggling At least the words “sit still” seem etched permanently into my brain Later I also did my share of saying "sit still” teenagers can drive you crazy Nothing escapes certain scientists studied have now "spontaneous They and its caloric physical activity” ramifications-other words fidgeting in and feeding The squirming and wiggling study was part of an effort to understand why some people gain weight and others stay slim under the same sorts of circumstances They studied each of 177 volunteers for 24 hours in a special room measuring each one’s energy usage by keeping track of oxygen consumed and carbon dioxide produced a standard method for determining metabolism They found significant differences in different people’s basal metabolism the rate at which they burn calories while lying still They also found that wigglers and squirmers fidgeters used as much as eight times the calories than used “Aha” I said to myself as I read a story about this study “so that’s why the eats so much oatmeal for breakfast and stays so slim And why perhaps as finally learned the lesson “sit still” my weight started creeping up Civilization gets you one way or another But genes get you too The researchers found that basal metabolic rates and fidgeting run in families LYNNDYL LEAMINGTON Connie Best Ph: Cheryl and Grayson Roper went to Provo Thursday night for a farewell dinner for the
