Call Geno: TEENAGE Betty Condie Utah Education Association by President Last year for the first time ever the public named drug abuse as the most serious problem facing public schools Parents say they overwhelmingly favor aggressive antidrug policies by schools The pattern that’s emerging in drug abuse prevention for school-agchildren involves teaching “refusal skills” in elementary and middle schools and giving direct support to high school students on the firing who abuse drugs and alcohol or have family members who do The elementary students who are targeted are often in the last grade before junior high the level when many start experimenting children with drugs In high school where students may be actual experimenters with alcohol and drugs have support groups become a common device to help kids “stay straight” A typical support group consists of a dozen or so students with a common concern who meet with a trained adult on campus once a week The first antismoking and antidrug programs 15 years ago were purely formational especially about the longterm negative effects of smoking and drug use But kids didn’t reduce their smoking or drug use because these formational programs didn’t deal with rs the social family and at predispose certain young people to start smoking or take up drugs Researchers have found that children are more impressed with the immediate negative effects of drugs-impaired ability to run track for dangers of addiction by the They’ve also found that programs that reduce peer influences are more successful than those that don’t The Department of Education-join14 other national by kicked off the seorganizations-hcond phase of an antidrug effort callThe without ed Schools Drugs: Challenge The program invites every school in the country to make a written commitment to plan for becoming For a free 'copy call ! 2 Delta Mental Health offices 51 North Center For Info call 5 4 Dear Aghast You’re absolutely right In my attempt to spread the acrimony around about alcohol use and abuse I have been negligent in my duty I have concentrated on the negative aspects of drinking and have completely ignored the many positive characteristics! But since I have been “found out” I will attempt to expound on the virtues of C±H OH Resource Appaisal and Management of Borger Texas has found a great use for beer Not fresh beer though but stale beer Once beer is days old it goes stale and usually the brewers throw it out RAM found a way to turn this stale beer into a plant growth stimulator that ultimately has been found to eliminate the deadly citrus canker Another derivitive has been found to preserve various kinds of rubber in extremely cold conditions Things such as fan belts and tires may be more adequately protected in temperatures down it is to minus 62 degrees Apparently being tested in Alaska And then there is the construction firm in Texas who is using a beer based chemical to keep dirt roads from getting muddy when it rains The water goes right through the substance into the soil allowing heavy equipment trucks to pass over without getting stuck It costs only about 13 of what a regular road would cost and will last about 20 years Recently beer has been blended with a product that combats sewer and septic tank odors Still another use is as a foam to extinguish aircraft fires And to think some people thought that beer was only good for drinking Looks like they were wrong on both counts! With all the benefits to mankind that stale beer offers think about the contribution you make when you choose not to drink On the other hand if you choose to drink a substance that is better used as a fertilizer fire fighting foam drain deoderizer road building material or rubber preservative “BOTTOMS UP” IG CONFIDENTIALLY: NORANCE is not always bliss Sometimes it is just IGNORANCE Helping your child succeed Just for Today Chronicle Progress Publisher Dear Readers: People are like gifts They come in all sizes shapes and descriptions They’re all different colors and rarely do you find two of them that are exactly alike Some are wrapped beautifully with bows and curls and some are wrapped in very ordinary paper with no flash or color just kind of plain Some of these gifts show signs of being mishandled or lost in the mail and the damage to the wrapping dicates that things may be pretty shaken up inside On the other hand sometimes they wear tags that state “Special Delivery” or “Special Handling Required” It is immediately clear that special attention is needed The problem comes when you try to estimate the value of the person or the gift by the quality or style of the wrapping Everybody knows you can’t do that very accurately but everybody does it to some extent Not until the gift is opened is it possible to know it’s real value And even then first appearances are often deceptive Not until you look past the wrappings and get a real feel for what’s inside can you gain a full apfor its worth This is preciation sometimes a little complicated though Some of these gifts don’t open up very easily and often require a lot of effort from others Some almost refuse to be opened while others have been opened before and discarded or put on the shelf and forgotten The message is clear: Identify the gifts in your life before they get lost in the mail Dear John All you talk about are the negative aspects of drinking Surely there has to be a more positive side that is being overlooked or discounted “Fess up”! Where’s your objectivity? Aghast Guzzler was it was in Oak City and Oak City canyon That was my whole world and not in Delta so far away from Oak City My Grandma Lyman had moved from Oak City to Delta to be near four sons who had land to farm She was my oasis in the desert She had planted trees and yellow roses which grew and she had a little patch of lawn I would go to her house and lie on her lawn and smell the fast growing poplar trees and yellow roses There was a new fragrance and a new beauty It was a revelation to a little six year old the knowledge that beauty is not a place that it comes from the inside of the person seeking it that it is acceptance of being with those you love that it can come It did From that time wherever I have lived I have found beauty and have tried to make it a more beautiful place Our desert valley is beautiful Mary Henrie Teacher to Parent wwmwwwmmmmwwwwmwwmw The Please stop the rumors Where is Beauty? When was five years old our family moved from beautiful green tree filled melon growing country Oak City to Delta We left the little grassy streams by the footworn sidewalks streams wide enough for a child to jump We left in the spring with locust blossoms lilac and fruit tree fragrance that filled the air and saturated our souls It had taken ten years for our mother to bring herself to that hard move Our father rode a horse back and forth the fifteen miles to his farm along the river banks of the Sevier In 1916 Delta was new ten years since the first settlers drew for lots scattered through the greasewoods of a mile square town The wind blew dust of newly plowed land roads were dust deep in the summer and deep with mud in storms Everything was white the land the dust the alkali even the green grease woods covered with dust So we moved I knew where beauty $ People once 4 believed it bad luck to put the left shoe on before the right Last spring a rumor was brought to our attention which involved my husband and I having a law suit againt Dr David Henrie Now almost a year later the rumor has surfaced and we are being asked of its truthfulness To set the record straight: Stewart Rowley is not —will not — and has never had any intention of suing Dr Henrie In Jan of 1984 we lost a baby and the attending physician was Dr Henrie What went on in the hospital that night including all the pain and suffering was shared between our doctor and us! Loosing our sweet baby girl was as hard on Dr Henrie as it was on us We feel nothing but love and admiration for this doctor We can’t imagine any doctor being more caring He showed to us a special spirit of love that only he could share In this day and age it is hard to find someone to take the time to care This personal event happened three years and a patient ago between a doctor surfaces Everytime gossip such as this it hurts only those involved Please take the time to care and let the rumors rest Kathy Rowley Thanks for the help On behalf of literally thousands of unborn children the March of Dimes thanks the residents of Millard County for their generous donations to fight birth defects The figures from the annual Mothers have just been totaled March Residents of Millard County gave more than $2900 to the March of Dimes durThe ing the week of January donations will be used to fund research and hundreds of programs throughout Utah and the nation to help prevent birth defects Each year more than 250000 children are born with birthday defects in the United States More children die from birth defects than any other cause for Thank you Millard County your kind generous support Jean Hatch Director Southern Utah Division March of Dimes Middle America Search for “Middle America” Oilman by Bob Thomas (A name and city have been changed here at the subject’s request All else is gospel RLT) I stopped in Tulsa on my swing back was hungry for west only because neon and nightlife and not because I considered the bustling metropolis any part of “Middle America” Tulsa definitely has neon but it comes up short in the nightlife department A big time here after the sun goes down is sitting around watching truck get unloaded In the my book that ranks right behind watching paint dry I got a good nights sleep and was up early to go walk and look the place over I wasn’t seeing much until I came to the Lincoln agency I like cars I’ve all my life Perhaps been a would be closer to the truth On the other side of a r conwindow was the longest vertible I’ve every seen It had a Lincoln hood ornament but the rest of the body was by “Customized” It was the colpainted a metallic or of crude oil fresh from the geyser I wandered in for a closer look was concentrating on the silver and walnut dash and didn’t hear the salesman up behind me But smelled his boutonniere and Paco Rabon “Interested?” he asked “I don’t know It’s a little small have a big fan club” “Beautiful isn’t it?” “A bit gaudy Who owns it? Some Arab shiek?” “No a local man BJ Dupree” “What’s he do besides consistently win lotteries?” “He’s an oilman” “I’d like to meet him” “He’s in the book” The phone book listed Dupree Enterprises Tower Bldg and a number I called A cute enough voice identified the place and I asked for the man himself “May I say who’s calling?” “Bob Thomas Mr Dupree doesn’t know me” “And the nature of your call?” “I’m a writer and I like to meet teresting people” I listened to Muzak for a minute and a half “What can I do for you Mr The voice sounded like Thompson?” a rasp file being scraped over a gravel road “You could let me interview you” “Come on up” I hardly heard the click BJ was waiting for me in a small done in soft shades of gray The receptionist blended well with the decor The only color was a vased single red rose on her desk There was no activity going on other than Miss Plain Wrapper who was filing her nails Dupree stuck out a hand to me the size of a Smithfield ham His grip was firm without hurting “You had lunch Mr Thompson?” “No and it’s ‘Thomas’ Bob Thomas” We went to his private club on the top floor of a downtown building About 30 stories up We had I rare baked potato and asparagus had a bottle of beer he had Jack Daniels and a splash I sized him up as we ate and talked He was deeply tanned unlined impeccably attired in soft gray wool that had undoubtedly been handcrafted by some bespoke tailor on London’s Savile Row A small gold chain ran from a button hole into a vest Patek pocket that held a timepiece (You don’t call anything that experience a “watch”) Forty years he looked for oil he told me Never found enough to meet expenses But he always picked up the mineral rights “Let the meek inherit the earth he said I just want the mineral rights” About three years before our lunch a major gas company tapped into a couple billion cubic feet of the stuff in southeastern Colorado Ol’ BJ held the mineral rights up there “Saw your car” “Ain’t she something? I’m waiting for a special tag We walked back to his office through the (Miss PW was working on a new nail) and into his private domain It too was gray except for bindings of classic books that lined three walls “When do you get time to read?” “I can’t but damned if I ain’t gonna learn You want to hang around and teach me?” I have things to do and “Sorry places to see” “Good You stick with it Maybe when you’re done huh?” “Maybe” He excused himself and went off through a door that I assumed led to a private bath When he came back he shoved something into my shirt pocket “Don’t argue with me It’s just a little something to help you along the way” We shook hands and I left Outside I took a peek in the pocket I just knew it was going to be a good day I never owned a $500 bill before Utah teens reach for a natural high The Utah Federation for Drug Free Youth will welcome an estimated 5000 teens and their parents to “Reach for a Natural High” at their annual conference March 1987 at the University of Utah The conference is scheduled for two days and will include keynote speakers and workshops on a variety of topics including popularity sports positive river running disciplining resisting peer pressure teen suicide and moraliThe music and public is also invited ty to the evening activities Keynote speakers include David Toma the man the Baretta series was patterned after Bubba Smith actor and football player who turned down a lucrative beer commercial because he felt the image he was portraying was bad for youth Carrie Hamilton Carol Burnett s daughter who was on drugs is and now recovering and starring in Fame and Mark Scharenbroich an author and motivational speaker for young people nationwide |
