it is that 10 percent of all farms in Utah will be lost to bankruptcy or foreclosure This figure does not include those farmers who will voluntarily make the decision to leave the farm and seek other employment have These ominous predictions prompted local and state officials to Resouce Network to form an financial provide emotional support counseling and a variety of other needs to families under stress The ambitious program was kicked off in Millard County with special banquets and programs in both Fillmore and Delta during February The keynote addresses were delivered by Dr Glen Jensen USU Extension Service whose social research has defined the Utah farm crisis and suggested some soultions “There are many causes for extra stress to farmers their wives and children” Dr Jensen told a crowd of over 300 in Delta last week “But we also have solutions And those are to create a forum for discussion involve everyone in planning and create a list of community resources available” he said Coordination of community Resource resources is the Network objective According to Allan Edwards of the Delta USU Extension Service Office the plan grew quickly from a commitment by many government groups to provide services to farm the families "From the beginning Utah State University Extension Division Farm Bureau Young Farmers Central Utah Mental Organizaton Health Center IPP and attorneys as well as church representatives worked closely together to build the Resource Network and to make it available to anyone in Millard County agriculture” Mr Edwards said The Resource Network includes an information phone number resource staff support volunteers groups and a directory of available services When a farmer calls for information about any aspect of the program he or she will be referred to one of the staff or directly to the appropriate resouce volunteer The Resource Network will include financial planning personal family stress budgeting legal considerations counseling education support groups and job programs Dr Jensen said that nine basic problems have led to the Utah farm crisis: families causing farm Intertwined ownership and management problems High accident rates 3)Lack of control over such things as weather and the market 4)The capital intensive nature of work 5)Farming transition from physical to mental job 6)Government controls 7)No traditional fringe
