Show Peer helper group assists FES 4th graders MHS NEWS by Danene Perkins On hand to receive top national in the National recognition Chapter Award and National Safety Award Program at the 1985 receives high national ratings gram covers all phases of activity open to FFA members and is the equivalent of “taking state” in FFA 1985 marks the 6th time in the past seven years that the Millard Eagle FFA Chapter has taken “State" and received the only Gold Emblem presented to a Utah the National Chapter from Organization The Millard Eagle Chapter also placed first in state competition in the 1985 Safety Award Program and was one of the top chapter nationally receiving a Silver Emblem at the National Safety awards ceremony in Kansas City The local chapter has won state competition in safety for the past eleven consecutive years and has placed in the top 48 chapters in the nation each of those The Millard Eagle Chapter of the Future Farmers of America has once again placed first in the state and received top national recognition in two important phases of activity for 1985 The chapter place first in the state in the National Chapter Award Program and was the only chapter in Utah to receive a Gold Emblem at the recent National FFA Convention held in Kansas City MO Tooele Chapter placed second in the state and received a National Silver Emblem with Bear River receiving a Bronze placing third Emblem nationally Of the 58 chapters in Utah and 8212 in the national only 92 received the organization coveted Gold Emblem The National Chapter Award Pro years The purpose of the National FFA Chapter Award Program is to assist FFA chapters in taking a more active role in the safety training provided for members Each year accidents take a tragic toll in lives personal injuries and property damage Through the National FFA Chapter Safety Aware Program FFA chapters have an opportunity to help reduce this tragedy by becoming involved and participating in local safety projects and activities Hopefully the Millard Eagle chapter has become identified as an organization that is willing and able to exert positive leadership and influence in making the communities a safer place honor “Reflections” winners SEIGAES YOU 27 Recently Mrs Ford’s Fourth grade class at Fillmore Elementary School learned how to “Just say no" to drugs alcohol and cigarettes Danene Perkins a senior and president of the Peer Helpers Group at Millard High School conducted a unit on the dangers and pitfalls of using drugs Danene taught the children various ways of saying no when they are offered drugs The children received stickers reading "Just say no" and badges reading “Hugs not drugs” They also received coloring books telling of the problems caused by the use of these substances A poster contest was conducted in the class by Danene and Helpers Diane Sorenson and Jeanne Sylvester The winners of the Best Slogan to go with the posters were Josh Probert first second Nancy Christensen place third place and Melissa Jackson The for Best winners the Art place were Marcie Starley first place Brian Monroe second place and Erica Levi third place Each winner was awarded a blue red or white ribbon All the posters were displayed in the hall where students and faculty stopped and read their messages To cap off the week the children signed a pledge that they would not use Each or cigarettes drugs alcohol received a laminated card stating their pledge to remind them and strenghthen their resolve Everyone felt it was a very worthwhile and successful unit Danene and the Peer
