Show Pag' Millard County 2 LSPS (Jlmnmimts Thun Nov 8 - - 1984 Soldier’s story £ue Continued I hope other people are enjoying the pheasant hunt more than I am My only days to really sleep in and I was jolted straight out of bed with blasts practically outside the bedroom window and we are in city limits I remembered reading some old “Chatter Box” columns concerning pheasant hunting so I started hunting Jane and I got Tuesday evening laughing so we forgot our purpose for awhile but I finally found the following excerpt in the Nov 10 1949 issue of the Millard County Chronicle: Dear Suzy Medical science is striving to lengthen the life span of man and then a bunch of chuckleheads take to the fields during the pheasant season and destroy most of the work of science and make the medicos wonder if it is at all sensible to try and save the human race when they are so intent upon doing the opposite There are a few things that should be done when the season rolls around again First all hunters should carry adequate insurance that is in good standing second give the hunter an telligence test of ten questions if he can answer one he is a typical hunter and can go to the fields third have each hunter carry dog tags in case he or some other hunter perforates him fourth then let the hunters hunt the fields and the farmers hunt the hunters It would even things up all around and make even more sport than the men have anyway Also in case we are ever threatened with war from some foreign nation we need never go to the expense of armament All we would need to do would be to ship them a bunch of pheasant explain the bare rules of the game and let them eliminate themselves The Chinese started this pheasant hunting thousands of years ago and they are still fighting among themselves But the ideas are all about as worthless and will receive about as much MM County Tho Chronicle Progress USPS Mta PaMMIni CMipny mry Ttwiday ty Publisher - f toft attention as a “No Trespassing” sign Toots In the Nov 12 1953 issue of the Millard County Chronicle the following cutline appeared at the bottom of a blank page The Chronicle went to considerable expense this week to have the brains of 78 pheasant hunters to find out what went' on inside thereof Above are pictured the findings (At this point we wish to make clear that any resemblance between pheasant hunters and human beings is coincidental) With the naked eye our readers can see that there are some brain cells (but the readers is cautioned not to confuse those little spots with brain cells because the majority of the spots are imperfections in the type of paper we are buying today and we found in the that there were not many 78 brain cells in any of the heads pictured) but some of the cells are stagand the balance are mostly nant dormant The heavier spots are the cells in a high rate of activity figuring ways and means of hunting a posted field that has any number of stock in it The machinations of the cells shows that the hunter is wondering how he can get by with it without the owner having to forcibly eject him Another working cell is shown in the more contemptible type of hunter who carries a pair of wire nippers so that he can cut fences and drive his car where he pleases with no regard for anything (This type of hunter was very prevalent around Deseret which caused a lot of hardship on the stockmen who spent most of the three days rounding stock back up) After showing the above picture to some of our local farmers they were unanimously of the opinion that an vasion by the Russians would be preferable to another invasion of pheasant hunters I could discuss the elections but what can I say We survived the campaigning (though there were times for me it was touch and go) now let’s hope we can survive what we did at the polls As most of the campaigns spent little time on issues and much time of cute words and fancy phrases We’ll never know whether we did the right thing or not until they take office and then we can hope they do a couple of thing we like Community Calendar Nov 8 Barbara Smith Delta Utah Stake Center 7:00 pm Nov 9 Bus trip for doctors’ appointments and shopping Pahvant Valley Sr Citizens Bldg Fillmore Nov 10 Juanita Charlesworth 90th Birthday Kanosh Ward 6:00 - Please attend!! “As adults Vets faith shaken I don’t know if you’ll print this or not I hope you do but I just had quite with the Vets Adan experience ministration that I’d like to share with a few of my Vet buddies I applied for a home loan and wanted to use my vets benefits to get it The reason I did is because in the I had just received a pamphlet mail telling me I should use my benefits because the country was proud ot it’s Vietnam Vets and wanted to give them first chance on the benefits they had I found this to be quite the opposite After the bank had told me that they were willing to go the loan but the Vets Administration had refused to approve my loan I decided to call them and find out why The lady was very nice but explained to me that my credit in the past had been too bad to justify approval I explained to her that I knew this and if She would check she would find that the entire amount of the loan (Thirty Eight Thousand dollars) was to do nothing else but to pay off my house and almost all of my bills including a few old ones None of the money was for any other reason I was informed by the nice lady that the reason for VA loans was to give young vets a place for their families a place to live and not to get people out of financial problems I explained that my house had been appraised by the VA at exactly thirty eight thousand dollars She then started explaining to me how a committee of 6 people had made the decision to refuse my request I told the (sweet lady) I was not begging for anything that she should tell all future vets about this before they send them to war It’s a shame I have more faith in my country than my country has in me I’m not saying it was wrong for them to turn me down I’m saying it’s too bad they wouldn’t even give my application a second look that was all I asked The one thing I have from being a Vietnam Vet is to know I can live the way I want If all my worldly belongings are few I still have my pride and that no one can take from me Thanks for listening if you did Reed B Roholt Hinckley Slob hunters disgust sportsman more This deer hunting season is leaving than any I can remember a very bitter taste in my mouth and it is far from over with the rest of the season and “special muzzleloading doe slaughter season” yet to come in our area As one who has a deep love for the and mountains outdoors our several I can’t wildlife forget examples of complete disregard for these things came across a doe shot illegally during the regular hunt its brain and the rest of the body extracted left to rot I found a spike buck shot in an open field and dragged into a wash possibly to hide it so the “hunter” could seek a larger animal I put a large two point buck out of its misery where it had fallen from weakness after having one hind quarter shot away and left to die After having cleaned it and returning several hours later to take it home found it had been stolen I wonder what story this hunter told about a mighty conquest? Hanging near the Maple Hollow road above Holden is another two point buck cleaned but not taken of While these are examples for a very beautiful disregard animal there is another type of disregard that is just as bad Many hunters feel they own every inch of ground when hunting season comes Fences mean nothing Posted property is like wet paint - the more it’s posted the more some hunters think they have a right to trespass Most local land owners are too nice to stop illegal entry and it’s amazing Some the attitude of many hunters do will go anywhere they want anything they want and leave the property in any condition they want They then get mad when an attempt to control the problem is made This situation is not limited to those new to the area or those who come from “out of town” to hunt Why am I a little outraged? There are footprints where there shouldn’t be there are bullet holes where there shouldn’t be and as I write this there is a very expensive bull shot - dying of lead poisoning -having been shot on private ground and left by some “slob hunter” who doesn’t have the proper respect for that wasn’t his and something apparently doesn’t know the difference between a deer and a beef Why do private landowners choose to post their property? Why are there laws to protect our wildlife? All one has to do is go hunting and observe the actions of you “slob hunters” Thank God most hunters are law abiding respectful of other’s rights and appreciative of the and its wildlife M Dean Bennett Holden Utah Travelers say thanks At approximately 8 o’clock in the evenof Sept 29 1984 our daughter and 15 month old grandaughter had their car break down on interstate 15 They were about 30 miles south of Delta and were enroute to Salt Lake City after vacationing in Los Angeles It was dark and they were very concerned about their baby the car and their While they were trying to decide belongings what to do a Mr David Rosenkrantz stopped his car and offered to help them They gladly accepted and he took them to his home in Oak City where he and his wife put ing them up for the night The next morning after the Rosenkrantzs had served them breakfast Mr Rosenkrantz drove back to the disabled car and towed it back to Delta For this help the Rosenkrantzs would not accept anything other than a thank you We think that all the people of Millard should know about the County Rosenkrantz’s generosity and we would be very grateful if you would publish this letter Sincerely John Exe and Evelyn Exe we” As more and more West Millard residents join in helping combat use of drugs and alcohol by youth it becomes more important to convey that moral and spiritual values do not restrict Rather they protect It is vitally important to convey that everyone regardless of age race or creed has worth To discover the worth of yourself as well as worth of others can be an exciting venture in human relationships Adults of the area must be willing and must expect to invest a great deal of time and energy “Rome wasn’t built 5n a day” Neither will new community attitudes towards youth be developed in a day Good positive attitudes don’t just happen They are created And then they are nurtured pampered and cherished as befit their value As aduhs we must be willing to submit to harsh assessments of ourselves' “To Thine Ownself be By ourselves True” is as applicable today as h was when first penned And that is not always easy Nor pleasant As adults we must recall our own growing up days What was it like in the 20’s? 30’s? 40s? 50s? 60’s? 70’s? How were those decades like today? Was life How were they different? more carefree then than now? Are there more or less temptations facing youth today in the 80’ s? As adults we need to value and understand ourselves before we can truly help youth value and understand themselves What makes us what we are today? What we learn about ourselves will help us understand today’s youth Are they so much different than we were? As adults we need to the lesson of expecting what is reasonable rather than what is perfect We need the art of listening We need to to develop positive attitudes about human relationships rather than skepticism Skepticism does not have a place in developing good human relationships Skepticism denies the skeptic an opportunity to be creative in hisher thinking Our best creative thinking will by necessity include others By that is meant humans interact to each other What I do affects others What others do affect me As adults we need to discard negative thoughts and actions Negative thoughts and actions can crack a spirit On the other hand positive thoughts and actions do not silence the melody of a life are we placing undue As adults stress on our youth? A simple thing such as community-widcurfew may be placing stress on young people who The are stretching towards adulthood most natural thing in the world for youth is to want to stop in at their favorite haunt for refreshments follow ing a high school activity Remember? A youth male or female needs that time to discuss to exclaim to to laugh to enjoy Denied that time youth becomes the victims of conflict Time If the school activity adjourns at 12:00 midnight and curfew is at the same hour what are youth to do? Leave the activity early? Forego a visit with their friends? Or try to circumvent the curfew? By that one thing alone (curfew) adults could be the unwilling partners to condoning lawbreaking Would it be a better policy to leave the hour of returning home to individual parents? As adults we need to develop faith in youth ourseives and our communi-y- we necd to see ourselves in the role of individuals who have the courage to help bear others’ problems Faith is a choice to be a believer Faith will help us see others including youth as good and beautiful people even when they’re trying very hard not to appear so As adults we need to remember that creating a solid relationship with youth will take patience perserverance energy and consistant behavior on our parts We do not need fear failure - nor success We need to be confident that as a community we can move as quickly or as slowly $ necessary It is not only our responsibility to do so It is our privilege by Sarah Inez Moody |
