old enough to remember when Clark Allred was the Principal of the new yellow brick elementary school that opened it’s doors to the Delta kids in 1916 will remember the ‘‘Awkward Discipline was important to Squad” Mr Allred He believed “If we can afford this beautiful new school house we can afford great teaching and great discipline” In those years the young men of our land were marching marching in training camps from Fort Louis to Camp Kearney and marching from the little towns and big cities to the music of the home town bands playing “Its a Long Way to Tipperary” marching to the troop ships bound for France and the War to end all wars Children were taught to march and to recite “Hats Off the Flag is passing by” In keeping with the times the Delta school children from the first to the eighth grade which were all the school classes there were in Delta from 1916 to 1923 were taught to march “Forward march mark time about face right face left face fall out” We learned quickly which was our “right” and which was our “left” We would line up at the ringing of the second bell on the long cement approach to the front steps by classes The younger classes stayed on the long cement approach but there were more than enough lines for the cement so the fifth sixth seventh and eighth grades stood in lines two abreast at right angles on the gravel Mr Allred meant “right” angles no sloppy wobbly lines Mr Allred had a great voice We all had great respect for him He stood at the top of the steps and had us “mark time” as the classes beginning with the first grade marched up the steps until all had marched turning the right square corners into the classrooms No one went into the schoolhouse before marching in all had to stay outside and play hop scotch marbles or baseball or just stand and watch and hold our lunch bucket In the cold time of the winter the rules were relaxed could go into the and children schoolhouse and stay warm until the bell rang and then all went outside and marched in in order If someone pushed got our of line made a “left” when it should have been a “right” if he was late getting there if he was sent to the principal’s office for discipline or any other infraction of the rules he was “priviliged to learn” by marching in the awkward The following statement is another point of view to the article that apin the ChronicleProgress peared September 6 1984 (Conk Structure Replace) The so called historical Conk Diversouthwest of Deseret sion Structure was first established by pioneer forefathers in a time of low water runoff in order to conserve water and rigate their crops During the high of 1983 the situation had water The structure drastically changed should not only have been breeched but removed and the river dredged to its natural allow the high water flow This was not done and the high water backed up and engulfed many acres of farm ground and private lots up river from the structure The new structure is and will continue to hold back water thus private properties will continue to be next f devastated by high water spring This paper has reported that state and county governments are im This statement mune to prosecution has since been denied by county officials The new structure diverts as did the old one the natural flow of the river and should have been advertized to the before being constructed It was not The 64 percent funding of the by the Agricultural new structure Stabilization and Conservation Service does not make the structure legal According to state laws any structure diverting the natural flow of any river Not is unlawful unless advertized mateveryone in the county or for that ter out of it is in the opinion that the old or new structure is in anyway an historical landmark Kathy Short! Ferron Utah Is Jim Hansen worth it? I The other night on television heard Jim Hansen the congressman from the first district respond to his challenger’s report of Mr Hansen’s in Congress record attendance According to the record Mr Hansen has never had his attendance record above 25 and one year it was a low as 98 Mr Hansen gave as his reason for the attendance in not being As a of his daughter marriage can mother of a married daughter appreciate Mr Hansen wanting to be there for that wonderful occasion recall most of the as However for the preparation preliminary marriage was done by my daughter and myself Dad was most useful in the signing checks and admiring many things we did The marriage day was great he was there The reception was beautiful and he was there very proud and happy But as the bride and groom left for the honeymoon Dad stayed with me and the next day he went back to the office I think he may have taken a day or even two off for the event Then Mr Hansen said his family squad During the morning and afternoon recesses the awkward squad marched around the school grounds with one of the men school teachers calling the commands It was a great deterrent to getting out of step being late or turning left when it should have been right Those who never broke any of the regulations were especially priviliged to ring the bell to pull on the long rope that hung from the top of the attached to the big bell schoolhouse that could be heard all over town warning families at 8:30 that the kids had better finish their mush and get out and walk Everyone walked no matter where they lived in town however some from the farms came on horses or in buggies It was discipline well learned in youth to last a lifetime was in an accident and received I can Again serious injuries his wanting and even appreciate needing to be with them But even with serious accidents or illness an will not give usually employer from employees unlimited time off the job with full pay submit that we the people of the First Congressional District are Mr Hansen’s employer and for him to attendance have such a terrible record for those years he has been We are our employee is unthinkable paying him a fair wage and he has us good and faithful promised service of a much take It doesn’t to see that we as mathematician are being shortchanged taxpayers who Hansen Mr Worse yet does not contest that his said with all record is as reported the finesse of a charging bull that he would “do it again! afford Jim Can we as taxpayers Hansen?
