Summer started off just perfect I had a job time to party and freedom I even had someone to spend my time with (I really cared for them) I don’t know what happened I don’t have any money my girlfriend is gone and everyone’s telling me what to do My parents keep and where me I’m about bugging going when I’ll be home I wish I knew what happened to all those things I had Call Geno The Sharon Sant Trial by Dawn Carder Much more is involved in seeing that justice is carried out than the man on the street realizes Many people have much to say freely critizing the police the system in general attorneys Perhaps if each of us became better informed we might gain better perspective of the legalities involved For eight days I sat in the courtroom in Provo seven eight sometimes nine to testimonies of hours listening witnesses viewing physical evidence collected by the Millard County Sheriffs deputies hearing reports exgathered by private investigators periencing the pain and frustration felt by both the Sant and Hamilton families and sharing opinions with I was often confused other reporters by conflicting testimonies wondering just who was telling the truth Yes I believe that there was a travesty of justice in the release of Robert William Bott However Judge George Ballif in my opinion should not be he blamed Under the circumstances-tconfusion of the believed immunity— there was nothing else that could be done There was in fact no justifiable reason to hold Bott any longer when he was not to be used as a witness The irony is that two forensic psychiatrists refused to sign commital papers on Bott In light of his (Bott’s) even at the bus as he confessions departed from Utah of helping to assault and mutilate Sharon Sant’s body it is ludicrous that the professionals did not consider Bott either a danger to himself or a danger to another person What about the manner in which the Millard County Sheriffs department handled the two years of investigating submitting blood and hair samples for tests tracking down suspects doing extensive finger print work making arrests etc etc? Sgt Robert Dekker was in charge of the case and he with others from the department spent thousands of hours in the pursuit of justice Millard County is not a metropolitan area with thousands of people and a Shellie SPORTS MED Aerobic Dance Certification Aerobic dance exercise has spread from the health clubs and church basements to include even the football field More individuals are performing aerobics each day As this movement has grown the need for qualified instructors has increased as well In addition since there is no single licensing board the need to set standards intensifies Ads in the classifieds want “certified” instructors What “certified” means can vary from a “nonsmoker can jog one mile and can lead dance” to a person who “completes a 3 hour exam demonstrates the ability to lead a class and can perform CPR” Some organizations even certify instructors via the mail It should be apparent that some consistent guidelines must be drawn to “certify” aerobic instructors The IDEA Foundation (International Dance Exercise Association) is the first group to undertake a national certification exam that does not require their specific training The exam offered by IDEA covers anatomy kinesiology exercise physiology nutrition and exercise programming as well as several other areas It is offered at several sites throughout the nation on three days per year throughout the Educational Testing Service The ad- - Where else are there checks and balances? Where else can one say as Warren Peterson said “Justice was not done The crime justified a capital offense but it is the statute that is wrong” Where else can professionals and private citizens work together to improve and correct unfair and weak laws in order to provide justice for all? Therefore my attention this week has been given to a small place in Provo that provided a pleasant respite between draining court sessions The small cafe is unpretentious and one might not notice it at first glance In fact I walked or ran by it a few times before I was aware of its However notice it I did presence much to my delight Clair’s Cafe is located on University Avenue in Provo approximately two It is blocks for the county courthouse fifteen to twenty stools at the counter at the end of which are the only two booths in the place From 6 am until 3 pm Monday through Friday people wander in and out enjoying coffee good meals and the pleasant ambience Beginning Clair’s will also be open on Saturday The owner of the establishment is an named Randy a man outgoing young person who immediately welcomes new alike into his and old customers establishment He chats with each as he prepares the meals taking time to dividually address each There is a felt as Randy and the customers interact with one another sharing opinions of news stories and personal antidotes Several daily papers are on the counter and they are shared by all The first day I stopped in for a soda I received a friendly “Hello” and my leaving was noticed too On the second asked me my day Randy stopped name and we began to chat It does of course feel good to be recognized and have another show interest in you Randy has the interest and the ability to do that with everyone While still in high school Randy worked for Clair the owner for whom the cafe is named The latter said to him “Work hard save your money and come back and buy this place” Apparently Randy kept that idea in mind even though he later went to work at a steel mill Sometime lapsed Clair suffered an aneurysm and an incapacitating stroke and the cafe was sold Randy did work for the new owners for a few months and then all the old employees were fired Well it wasn’t too long before the new owners left In an effort to meet her father’s Clair’s daughter medical expenses took over the business Randy returned to work for her during the day while attending college at night Juggling a home a family and a business became quite a burden for Clair’s daughter She approached Randy asking him if he would like to buy the cafe After carefully assessing his life deciding that he was working hard with college and a job and feeling that he was getting nowhere he made his decision He bought Clair’s Cafe That was four years ago It’s hard work it’s a big responsibility but Randy says that he is happy with his decision “I enjoy meeting people like you finding out where they are from and finding out a little bit about them It’s the people I most enjoy” he said Oh there are some times when he would like to "pack it in” but generally he has a good time doing just what he is doing Sometimes a person will wander in asking for a “free lunch” Such situations are difficult for Randy to refuse for he is a compassionate person Still he has learned to be firm referring the person to local shelters At Christmas time however Randy gives a free meal each week to needy individuals andor families There has been no time for vacations in four years but Randy does make time to relax and be with his family “There’s no way I’ll open on Saturdays in the summer” he stated Saturday and Sunday are the days for recreation and being with his wife and children If you are in downtown Provo and would like a good meal in a congenial setting stop in at Clair’s Cafe on You’ll quickly University Avenue become part of the business men and women other professionals shoppers etc -- that enjoy one another Most fun though will be meeting Randy the gregarious owner Dear John Letters This column is presented community service of Then when the story is printed the editor pauses with trepidation every time the phone rings Has he (or she) written an editorial or done a story that has made someone unhappy and is the caller going to give him an earful or cancel his subscription? Or both? I’ve never been an editor except of a corporate house organ where the editor is given quite a free hand as long as he conforms to company policy So we salute editors everywhere They earn their keep every day whether we the great unwashed public believe it or not Ottley’s Oddball Observation: We all admire the truth provided it agrees with our view |
