Meadow “so that people here will realize what a good thing they have going for them" Stan was speaking of his brush with death recently when he came within a hair’s breadth of dying Stan and his wife Sue moved to Meadow a few years ago to retire in that quiet friendly small town He had suffered for years from an injury he received during his World War service in the Navy His ship was blown up and when Stan came to he had a collapsed lung Sometime later he lost his left leg in and industrial accident Not everyone knew about his injuries however but the artificial leg he wears is beginning to become famous as he “plavs” it tapping on in the it - as his "musical instrument" Meadow Misfits Band His leg wasn't the problem a couple of weeks ago though It was his one good lung that nearly failed him when he contracted pneumonia Sue had been trying to get him to go but Stan put it off to the hospital until she had to get a neighbor to practically carry him there When he arrived at the Fillmore Stan was in really bad hospital shape He was admitted and given the standard treatment for pneumonia but after a couple of days he couldn’t breath at all He doesn't remember all the events too clearly but remembers the immediate and personal attention given him by the nurses Rene Eberle - and Susan Ferguson and especially Dr David Limburg “They saved my Stan said “I remember Rene and Susan pounding on me” he recollected “and how cool and collected Dr Limburg was He didn’t panic He knew exactly the right thing to do and did it If it wasn’t for him wouldn't be here talking to you life" today” Stan was told later that he stopped breathing and had a very feeble pulse Nurse Eberle said that Stan had gone into respiratory arrest most likely from a mucous blockage She said she gave him a chest thrust to relieve the blockage The nurses continued with back and chest thumps now standard proceedure to help loosen mucus in pneumonia patients He was transferred to Utah Valley Regional Medical Center intensive care unit "That's another thing too Those ambulance EMTs were really great” he recalled "They kept me going all the way up to Provo them wouldn’t have made it either was in and out of a coma all the way there but I remember one fellow named Gordon who kept telling me to ’hang in there'” There were also two girls but don’t remember their names (We checked and discovered the team on duty were EMTs Gordon Bennett Cathy Edwards and Jolvnn Mitchell) Stan is home now still taking it easy “but I'm going to be okay" he said "thanks to Dr Limburg and the fantastic medical Foundation 100 Arbor Avenue Nebraska City NE 68410 by February 28 1985 Former resident has another song published Della Former Fillmore resident Dame Edmunds now residing in Salt Lake City recently had another song published The latest addition to her is a patriotic musical repertoire march called “The Nifty Fifty” Mrs Edmunds said "It's all about the 50 states" Having the song published is all the more remarkable as at 81 years of age not many songwriters are still going strong But perky Della even sang it over the phone to the Boy “Some of the Scouts of America words say ‘We've got a president that's nifty to head the Nifty Fifty etc’ ” Della explained "and when I sang it to the Boy Scouts of America here on the phone they just went crazy over it and ordered the first copies off the press” had A group of Senior Citizens been singing it in their act around the Salt Lake Valley and it went over the so good that Marge Dubach of the Salt Lake City president in charge of the show Nitestand was the prime mover in having it published the new Miss Sharlene Wells and her mother visited America in Miss and November Della America has promised to learn the song and sing it Mrs Edmunds modestly says “1 was inspired to write it and feel can’t really take credit" However her talent in song writing has been recognized for many years During World War II in 1942 Della wrote the rousing song "To Arms To The song gained Arms America” much popularity and was sung in schools army camps and over the radio all over America during the war In 1965 she also wrote “The Nitecap Song” which was the Herb Jepko Nitecap Show theme song and broadcast on the nightly KSL Radio show for many years The song was also used as the official “Nitecap Song" for the Nitecaps International Association Della has devoted many years to the study of music and voice culture In addition she is a patron of the arts and a promoter of the image of Never Millard Fillmore having her roots in President forgotten Fillmore's namesake town she has been advocating for quite some t:me that a sculpture bust be made of Fillmore and located in the Museum She also would like to see a play written about President Fillmore by KSTU's Clyde Craig presented in his namesake town The Board of Chamber of Commerce’s Directors has discussed looking into this possibility and will be contacting both Mrs
