well as to the brightly lighted busy homes of our valley It is a joyous time with friends and family visiting music and programs and gifts And there are memories memories that sustain and comfort of many Christmases through the years What a gift if memory to live again the happy times and times that took courage and strength The courage is still there but some of the strength is gone The kind nurses understand and give loving care All of the folks in the extended care are old enough to remember back many Christmases to the “depression years” that were different than new when there were not many presents under the Christmas tree Fern remembers that she lived in her home when she was a grandparents who was girl with a grandmother blind Christmas was just another day but in her own home with a family of eleven children and a loving husband who loved to sing the children sang Christmas songs and all received presents of homemade clothes of shoes and coats None were ever envious of what the others had received There were parties and happy times of young folks getting together for a “candy pull” or sleigh rides or just to enjoy companionship Genevieve a daughter of John M and Emma Hinton Wright remembers a happy busy home of nine brothers and seven sisters The Wright boys always planned a trip for a load of wood just before Christmas and came home with a Christmas tree which they planted watered and it was fresh and beautiful for Christmas They received clothing and a game once in a while Hinckley was close enough to Dixie that they could always get molasses and always made molasses candy She remembers that there were always young people teachers and students from other towns living in the Wright home attending the Millard Academy Eleanor remembers being carried in her father’s arms with her mother walking beside them through the snow that crunched under their feet and the brilliant stars just above them to the town hall for the Christmas party Santa Claus came and danced around the hall with a wheelbarrow filled with candy and peanuts He dumped the load into the middle of the floor of the big 10 Elder John Teeples 802 2nd Ave Altoona PA 16602 The fight against substance ahnco In 4illfirrl ffllllltV Millard I would like to applaud County for the effort that has and is being made in preventing substance As the Alcohol and Drug abuse PreventionEducation Specialist for Millard County I have met and worked with concerned people in the community whose efforts toward preventing substance abuse have been impressive For instance there is now a concerned group of parents who meet to discuss ways to prevent substance abuse and plan strategies for community intervention with the problem This group is called the Community Support Group and Friends Their next meeting is December 12 at 7:00 pm in the City Chambers at the new city office building They have had a very good response to their efforts and I would highly encourage those interested to attend the meeting and become involved In the school system the stage has provided an Alcohol & Drug Prevention curriculum which we hope to have all the teachers trained in and available to all students within 5 years This proIt program gram is called the skills concentrates on and coping skills rather than teaching about drugs and the use of them Research has shown this to be a more effective way to prevent substance abuse and of course the old scare tactics solution has been replaced by this approach When I first started the job I visited the schools and I was particularly enthused by the reactions I got in the Delta Middle School After talking informally with many of the teachers I soon learned they are very eager to be trained in the program and receive materials Their concern for preventing their students from becoming involved in alcohol and drug abuse is obvious And the other schools have teachers and principals who are very concerned about the problem and have been helpful in seeing that the program gets used Another very concerned organization is the local law enforcement I have many DUI offenders who come into my office and state they will never drink and drive in this town again This is a result of strict and consistent enforcement of the DUI laws which I feel the community can be proud of In addition the law enforcement has spon- - Christmas card- - nursing scholarship fund You can sign up for your Christmas Greetings and donate to the Nursing Fund at the following Scholarship businesses or residences: East American Savings & Main Delta West Main First Security Delta So 300 East MEA Credit Delta Valley Bank & Delta Zions First Nat’l Delta D & J’s Mirage Lynndyl Morris Supply Hinckley Oak City Shopping Mall Oak City Oasis Seed Oasis Mel Scow Residence Deseret Ray & Carmella Hoelzle Residence Abraham Gene & Gloria Walker Residence West Main East Main Store Country Leamington Leamington Sutherland Donations can also be made at the office of the West Millard Hospital andor the Millard County Chronicle Progress in Delta Sign up early MHIerd The y00 lurisimas Swan Itak M24 Mia Editor Dutton B Editorial Barton Marge Ftemore Editor Managing Amott Mark e at Reporter i r prevention strategy Millard County does not have the highest rate of substance abuse in the nation I suggest we keep it that way and make a goal to have one of the lowest rates of substance abuse in the nation I am available to give presentations to groups interested in substance abuse and I do referrals if someone wants individual help We also have a resource library with information on substance abuse at the Central Utah Mental Health Center These materials can be checked out or run off The best time to check out materials is between 10:00 am and 2:00 pm when my secretary Estelle Hayes is available Pamela Nielson PreventionEducation Specialist Millard County Large everything It is hard to realize how wonderfully they saved so much with such tender care And also a special thanks to those who were also there to help And thanks to all those special people and our friends that offered us their hospitality and help You’ll always be We thank you remembered The Black family John Jo Lynn Amy Shelly Aaron Sarah & Lorie Beth Advertising Dutton Production S Detign Sale Dennit Ashbrook Evelyn Malet - Hbnorc Office Manager Receivable Account!
