Feed said Blackham in an interview said the wholesale price for Utah turkey is currently about 85 cents a pound up about 20 percent over the price of about 69 cents a pound last year However he said that doesn’t necessarily mean consumers will be paying that big an increase at the retail level this year One reason is that many of the big chain stores bought their turkeys earlier in the year when the price was less than 85 cents a pound Also Blackham said retailers often use turkey as a “traffic getter” by selling it at a low price Many consumers are buying fresh rather than frozen turkeys Blackham said fresh turkey generally sells for about 4 to 5 cents a pound more While nationwide of production turkey is up about percent this year Utah’s output is about the same as last year’s at 27 million head About percent of Utah’s turkey output is ported to east and west coast markets Blackham said adding that growers make sure they take care of the Utah market first Blackham said the quality of Utah’s turkey crop continues to improve as growers become more efficient “We just feel like turkey is one of the best most nutritional food values the consumer can buy” he said WISE
