most people it can be as much as “several times a week" In fact 54 percent of the 1 000 people asked in a recent Gallup Pool for The Association for Dressings and Sauces said they pile on the lettuce at least that much Twenty percent of the respondents said they eat salad once or twice day Twelve percent said they dip into the salad bowl once a week 10 percent said one to three time per month and Seeking part of Utah’s heritage Bobbie Irwin is seeking information about twined rag rugs which resemble braided rugs but are rectangular and woven on a simple frame Rarely made today these rugs were popular in Utah during the early 1900s and again in the 1930s and ’40s Requiring a minimum of equipment twined rag rugs provided beautiful and very durable carpeting using readily available materials at virtually no cost No rug loom or special expertise was needed The rugs were made by twisting two strips of rags around a warp (lengthwise strands) or rags or heavy string "Many of the people who used to make these rugs are now in their 80s and 90s Perhaps most of them are no longer living and their knowledge of twining died with them" Irwin conjectures She hopes to document as many examples of these rugs and their makers as possible A book manuscript she is preparing will feature the work of several Utah rug twiners “I feel as if I’m twenty years late starting this study" she says A twined rag rug exhibited at the 1989 Weber County Fair led her to an Ogden woman who is still making them and Irwin has interviewed rug twiners in Grantsville Pleasant Grove and Other rugs have turned up in thrift shops and friends’ summer cabins A rug exhibited at the 1991 Utah State member is Fair by a Wayne County evidence that the technique has not completely died out among the younger generation Irwin suspects that many people may own these rugs without realizing it The twining technique results in a braided or knitted appearance and the warp is completely covered Many people who made these rugs did not consider themselves weavers and did not use the terms “twined" or “twining" about Anyone with information these nigs is encouraged to contact Bobbie Irwin at 2859 N 850 E Ogden UT 84414 "Twined rag nigs are an important part of Utah's pioneer heritage" she says "and I hope that my efforts can help revive this technique here and else- where" DELTA Our loving Mother
