whether or not the team is going to he on ESPN The wrestling program at DHS has claimed over one hundred individual titles The team is ucd with a team in Virginia for the most all time State tradition We get a lot of family support" he said "We’ve got honest individuals on our team We work harder and have tougher training rules The kids are willing to sacrifice and sometimes the one point matches come down to that" said Coach Holman Coach Ron Petersen led the team to eight consecutive State Championships between 1969 and 198 Coach Petersen said the reason our team docs well aca dcmically is because this is such a small area that kids realize that they are going to have to go out of Dcl’a to make living and that resiling is only tempo rary He says the reason the team does well s because of tradition on the mat ’Tradition makes is easier for the kids coming up to 1o well We start them wrestling in the third grade and they just continue through until they are seniors basketball After we started wmning if became very popular " At that time there was only two class divisions and there couldn't be more so than four teams at a tournament Delta went to a lot of dual meets sometimes as many as 5 or 20 a year Under Porter the team went for nine year without ever losing a dual meet Coach Porter said that image of the wrestler started changing "I recruited some kids and one of them had never been in athletics before got him wrestling and we wrestled the whole season 26 0 So it wasn't just the hoods anymore who wrestled’’ said Coach Porter WTien Porter was informed he was going to be the wrestling coach he went to a clinic at Oklahoma University "I got work outs and drills and they are basically the same ones used today I coached Ladd Holman and he uses the same things but there are a lot more moves today than there was then ” "Our secret is being in belter shape than everyone else" said Coach Porter “Ladies” halt a Ram attack Kryse "I thought you
