Sampson (right) during the final stage of completion Tower for Peregrine Falcons built in Millard County cooperative effort the Bureau of Land Management and Utah Division of Wildlife Resource recently built a tower and nest box for peregrine falcons The site is near Clear Lake Waterfowl Management Area in Millard County Biologists are hoping to attract a pair of migrat ing falcons to nest at the tower Utah Power and Light Company donated and set up the power poles for the tower County Woods a carpentry business in Fillmore volunteered to build the nest box for the birds Peregrine falcons are similar to the common prairie falcon They have most black heads with heavy black "moustaches’ and slate colored or dark brown backs Both have pointed wings narrow tails and quick wing beats The peregrine falcon is an endangered species It began to decline in Utah in the late 1940's because of the use of agricultural pesticides loss of wetland habitats disease and human activity Peregrines usually nest on ledges In a Ice Fishing along high cliffs They eat other birds such as swallows mourning doves and shorebirds Predators on the peregrine include golden eagles owls and raccoons In recent years biologists have tried to reintroduce peregrines into historic nesting areas One method is by bui'ding a tower and nest box and "hacking' a bird at the site This means releasing a young and feeding it until it learns to fly If it survives the bird will usually return to the same site in later years Hacking birds has been very successful in northern Utah Because purchasing birds for release is expensive the agencies hope that the new tower will attract migrating birds to nest in Millard County Pahvant Butte an inactive volcano near the lower was historically used for nesting by peregrine falcons Clear Lake is an excellent place for the birds to hunt If peregrines begin nesting at the lower they may someday nest at Pahvant Butte again The problem arises when Fishermen catch a lake trout and keep it thinking it is a splake trout Hepworth has taken on an education program to help Fishermen identify both the splake and lake trout The education program includes informational signs and literature that is posted at a variety of sites around Fish Lake Knowledgeable sportsmen can catch the smaller lake trout and safely release them while keeping the tasty splake This helps ensure that there are more large lake rout around to grow in some instances to weigh more than 30 pounds Hepworth cautions ice Fishermen to carefully evaluate the ice conditions prior to Fishing Clear new ice is the strongest slushy ice is only half as be sure strong Whenever ice Fishing the ice is at least three inches thick and safe Unlike the summertime trout Fishing Hepowrth recommends that ice fishermen use small lures and baits The Tish seem to bite very soft and light thus Fishermen need to be on their toes and set the hook with light necessary prior to Finding a "hot spot" Since many waters around Utah have different limits and a variety of regulations as always be sure to pick up the new 1990 Fishing regulations prior to going Fishing Ice Fishing has become one of the top outdoor sports in Utah Since the Utah Division of Wildlife Resources adopted Fishing regulations several years ago the sportsmen of Utah have become hungry for this winter sport Although the fascination of cutting a hole in the ice and Fishing directly below has spread like wildFire it has not come about without a few problems Educating the sportsmen on ice Fishing safety developing the proper Fisheries management programs and providing angling information that will help the sportsmen experience success is some of the goals the DWR has undertaken An example of one complicated Fisheries management problem that Fisheries Manager Dale Hepworth of Cedar City is solving is that of the Fish Lake Trout management proSplakeLake gram Fish Lake has long been known as a lake where sportsmen possibly could catch a huge lake trout But with the onset of the new Fishing many Fishermen are traveling to Fish Lake to Fish for the prize eating Splake trout (which is a cross between a Lake Trout and a Brook Trout) The Splake are abundant at Fish Lake and provide tremendous winter Fishing since they seem to bite best during the “iced over" times The Divison of Wildlife Resources held roadblocks throughout the state this year The main purpose of each roadblock varied For example the major roadblock in Sl George on (Bloomington Station) was held to collect biological data while the major roadblocks held at Scipio and Levan were to check hunter compliance with the game regulations The Bloomington checking station had a total of 7634 hunters pass through Their total harves was 3293 deer of which 2770 were bucks and 523 were legal docs for a 36 success How big were the bucks? Ranging from spikes to those having more than 4 spikes 40 two points on a side— 13 four three points 17 28 pioints points and 2 having more than 4 points on one side of the antlers H unters mostly came through the checking station from every hunting unit in the state The data collected will be compared with data collected from many years past thus obtaining reliable trends Other standard questions were asked of the hunter like on the Fishlake unit “Did you hunt deer in Utah in 988?" of only suspect Over 6000 hunters were checked at the Scipio and Levan stations Officers from the DWR Department of Agriculture Highway Patrol Parks and Recreation and the Juab and Millard County Sheriff s Offices worked together to hundred citations The two hundred citations came after stopping and checking 2204 vehicles The DWR was happy with the high rate of compliance of wildlife laws Of the two hundred citations issued only 56 of those citations were wildlife related Checking station roadblocks be it law enforcement type or game management type point the way to better management for wildlife agencies like the Division of Wildlife Resources Watching wildlife in Utah Wildlife watching and photography is a growing pastime among Utah residents and tourists alike January through March is a great time to discover Utah wildlife especially if you like to see and photograph big game animals like deer and elk Both deer and elk form herds and move to lower elevations or winter ranges during this time of year Often they're grazing near major highways Muledccrmay be seen grazing throughout the day on slopes along eastbound through Parley's Canyon and from Echo Junction to the Wyoming Border Other good viewing areas for deer include: US Route 6 through Sardine and Logan canyons in Cache County and through Spanish Fork Canyon in Utah and Carbon counties along from Cove Fort to Green River near from Parowan to Cedar City and northeast of Moab along the Colorado River on State Route 128 Several hundred Rocky Mountain elk may been viewed from the warm comfort of a DWR visitors center at Hardware Ranch in Cache County at the lop of Blacksmith Fork Canyon on State Route 101 For a modest fee sleighs take hardy wildlife watchers to within a few feet of the feeding elk Smaller herds of elk may be from viewed in Utah County along Payson to Nephi and on Slate Route 28 from Levan to Gunnison Antelope are often seen in northeastern Utah along US Highway 40 from Duchesne to the Colorado border along State Route 6 from Price to Green River along the shores of Flaming Gorge Reservoir near Dutch John on US ROute 191 and near Manila on State in Tooele Route 43 and along County from Tooele to the Nevada border Many species of birds may readily be For all your printing needs come and see us at The Millard County Chronicle Progress we give FREE estimates and we stand by our price We said yes Of the question which 70 “Did you observe any deer killed and left in the Field?" a very large number of hunters said “yes" on the three point or better units When questioned “Were you checked on the Field by an ofFicer?" 14 said yes When asked “Did you said hunt on private land?" only 14 yes This type of information on each deer unit often tells a story that Field biologists and conservation ofFicers also have assorted colors of index and forebond sold by the sheet seen during the winter menths in Utah Several hundred American bald eagles migrate to Utah each winter They are often seen along the eastern shores of the Great Salt Lake from Brigham City to Salt Lake City along the Weber River system from Wanship to Morgan and in Tooele County from Tooele to Vernon A myriad of roads intersect these areas where eagles hawks and a diversity of smaller wintering birds are wailing to be discovered by adventurous wildlife watchers The Division of Wildlife Resources “Dis(DWR) has launched an cover Utah Wildlife" program to help people view photograph and leant more about the state's incredible diversity of wildlife In addition to offering a free "Discover Utah Wildlife" species checklist to wildlife watchers (available at any DWR ofFtce and from conservation ofFicers statewide) the DWR is also a partner in a cooperative venture with the US Forest Service and the Defenders of Wildlife to publish a“Watchable Wildlife" viewing guide due out this spring So dress warmly grab your binoculars and camera and “DISCOVER UTAH WILDLIFE!” For more information on winter wildlife watching contact any DWR office Free tax help Free -
