of Oak City Utah (T 17 S R 3 W Section 7) by commercial means The purpose of this thinning is to improve the vigor and growth of the stand by removing about 50 percent of the trees This will maintain the appearance that is one of the attractions of the area The present use of the area is for dispersed campuse We to continue as intend for this ing it is in Management Areas 2B and 9A The timber sale will be designed to enhance the recreational opportunities in the area and improve the health of the remaining trees The stand is presently overstocked and condition the trees are in a weakened because of limned nutrients water and sunlight The basal area banes fromm 140 to 240 square feet per acre The thinning would reduce the basal area to range from 80 to 90 square feel per acre Ponderosa pme stands with a basal area over 100 have a high risk of mountain pine beetle attack A similar stand in Meadow Creek Canyon was recently attacked by mountain pme Because of the weakened beetles condition of the stand almost 100 percent of trees tacked by the beetles were killed A weakened stand can readily he killed by a beetle tack Healthy stands can withstand attacks by moderate numbers of beetles with the Land The proposal in consistent and Resource Management Plan for the Fishlake National Forest It is in Management Areas 2B and 9A Management and Prescription 2B calls for selection for ponderosa shellerwood harvest methods and the application of intermediate pine treatments to maintain growing slock level to h also standards (plan page calls for a minimum visual quality objective of partial retention (plan page Management Prescription 9A calls for the same timber harvest methods and visual quality Addiuonally objective n calls for tlie prohibition of log landing and
