Show of I DHS spotlight Patricia Jara is a senior at Delta High and a rotary exchange student from the Philippines She has been in Delta for the last 2 months Patricia says it’s okay to be in a small town Ike Delta but she ishet she had gone to a bigger city Patricia is 17 years old and has already graduated from high school in the Philippines “I should be in college now but I decided to be an exchange student because I think it’s a worthwhile experience” Patricia is the youngest of four girls When she came to the United States six exchange students from Australia and the United States moved into her home One was from Utah “He was really weird so when I found out was coming to Utah I was worried that all the people would be like him” she said The things she noticed right off that were different was the school system and the families She says their school system is like Japans We don’t get to choose our own schedules and the teachers move around not the - r students When she returns home at the end of May Patricia says she will miss the Pizza House the people she has met and the snow Her advice to the people in the United States is “They should be glad they have snow!” A study of the Science Dept by Tami Reynolds Dissecting frogs mixing chemicals and studying the stars are all integral parts of the science department at Delta High School Delta’s science department has been recognized as one of the best in the state The head of the department is Mr Tom Judd with Miss Janet Reeve Mr Uadd Holman and Mr Uarry Hartman as the other teachers The science department covers the areas of biology chemistry earth science physics anatomy and physiology Every student in DHS is quired to have two science credits to graduate Most colleges and universities require or would like at least three There are two college classes offered in Delta are college High They and AP physiology and anatomy chemistry In both classes the credit is optional Mr Holman and Mr Hartman teach physical earth science Earth science also known as general science covers space science earth chemistry geology weather forecasting earth movements and more Mr Hartman’s class took a field trip to Hansen Planetarium earlier in the year They saw a star show and had a rock demonstration Next year they hope to go to Uehman’s Cave Mr Hartman said “I would like to establish a greater interest in the area of geology” This is because he is finishing a geology minor Mr Holman feels that “Students are here to learn regardless of their amount of intelligence” Both teachers would like their students to have an appreciation for the world they live in As Hartman stated "I’m trying to make them appreciate the science around them I think the more they learn the more they can appreciate” Mr Hartman would like students to realize that the world is changing and has changed and he wants them to know some practical use of science Biology is taught by Mr Judd and Mr Holman Biology consists of photosynthesis genetics students do labs all year ranging from microscopic observations to animal dissections Biology is the study of natural life The class studies everything from plants to animals to germs Chemistry is taught by Miss Reeve Students learn the major elements and their charge It is lab oriented testing pH levels of chemicals flame testing chemicals bending glass tubing and more Chemistry is based on chemical reactions while physics is based more on mechanical science Physics is also taught by Miss Reeve Physics covers everything from speed and acceleration to light and sound color and electricity Students in physics spend a lot of time in the lab area Miss Reeve feels that students learn more from doing the labs themselves than from just watching The college physiology and anatomy class is taught by Mr Judd His goal this year is to get the class set up to get college credit Students go in depth to the structure and function of bones muscles sense organs nervous systems and the rest of the human body They do labs dissecting brains fetal pigs and frog legs They use eyes a college book and go at a college pace Because of an excellent staff the science department in DHS has become one of superior quality producing superior students Sterling Scholars by Daniel Davison The competition for this year’s Sterling Scholars has been picking up speed over
