January According to C Booth Wallentine executive vice president of Utah Farm Bureau some fuel distributors are telling farmers they must pay the tax in 19s9 “This is simply not true Just prior to its October 1988 adjournment Congress passed a law repealing the 5 cent per gallon tax that was imposed early in 1988” he noted “The repeal becomes effective at midnight December 31 1988” Wallentine said The Farm Bureau official said farmers and ranchers who paid the tax in 1988 can get refunds or credits against future taxes due and the government will pay them interest on any taxes paid during 1988 Farmers have until July 31 1989 to claim their refunds or credits using forms which are available from the Utah Farm Bureau 5300 South 360 West Salt Lake City Utah 84123 Wallentine said Congress adopted the tax as a budget balancing effort knowing full well that the tax collected in 1988 from farmers would have to be refunded in 1989 “What they failed to recognize was the double cost of
