Show 6 Pge - Millard Count LSPS Thurs Oct 20 1988 Community Event A friendly encounter by Evelyn Mallet About 12:15 Monday afternoon Oct 17 I was in Duane’s Food Town in Fillmore buying a can of soup for my lunch when I noticed several men doing some serious grocery shopping with much conversation about it The language they were speaking was certainly not English At the check stand were more of these people so I deduced they must be a tour group passing through Fillmore and from exotic far away land In my past experience working at New Mexico State University had met with many foreign students some from India Iran Kuwait and several north African countries also Brazil and South America However these people were different and they aroused by curiosity I checked my purse to see if I had back of an something to write envelope-abravely approached one gentleman who was getting his “Do you speak groceries checked English?” I asked He replied with a surprised look that he did but not very good I explained my purpose in askarticle for the newspaper--sing seldom there is news in Fillmore He seemed delighted and called over another man whom he said could speak English much better We moved to an way spot near the door and proceeded to ask the where’s and why’s The spokesman was Zvi Lipman and had an excellent command of English They were all from Israel different areas but all lived together in a kibbutz called the Tsora Kibbutz a corporation and something like our private retirement communities Their language was Hebrew of them were on this tour which had already organized PAHVANT VALLEY SENIOR CITIZENS SCHEDULE Ruth Zmitravich Monday Oct 24: Beef stew with vegetables Wednesday Oct 26: Pork chops Thursday Oct 27: Salisbury steak Monday Oct 31 is Halloween! "Your civic duty and personal responsibility vole" reminds C FRANK BAKER County Commission Candidate "Make sure you're registered and vote Novembers 1988" Pd Pol Ad Tuesday is to Deer Hunt Bake Sale 'I Sponsored b fill more Pink Ladies 2110AM ii Fri i: Duane’s Parking Lot Fillmore Oct fMWVMMWW President Millard Fillmore The family of Sam Roth wishes to thank all of our friends and neighbors for the support and sympathy expressed during the recent loss of our husband and father The cards and flowers and all other acts of were beautiful kindness greatly appreciated We would also like to extend a very thanks to Bishop Vernon special Christensen and to the Kanosh Ward Relief Society for their efforts in our behalf Thank you all for the love that made our loss more bearable Millie Roth and family :: traveled through a part of Canada a bit of Mexico and the length of the US Next stop was Salt Lake City Yellowstone National Park and then back to New York City and home The group had all crowded around by now apparently pleased they were being interviewed Mr Lipman a very pleasant and congenial person seemed happy to answer my questions He quickly volunteered they did not care for New York City or Tijuana Mexico Also their impressions of Los Angeles and San Francisco were a tle dissappointing too It seems those cities were too large and too many peoThe US ple and a little frightening in general was not what they had pected They thought life in this country would be like they have seen it in the movies They discovered it was not They were also surprised to see so many Spanish and Oriental people here They were very impressed by rural I told them not to judge America America by the big cities but by the heart small towns and their and pulse of our great country Mr Lipman especially elaborated on the beauty of Bryce Canyon the mountains of Utah and the exceptional friendliness of the people in this state It was time for them to board their bus and there were so many more things I wanted to ask these fine people and to take their picture but I didn’t have a camera with me As we all bid a friendly goodbye Mr Lipman gave me a very American expression “Have a good day” I thought how we Americans influence so many people throughout the world for good as well as bad I was glad the little town of Fillmore left a good impression on their experience in the US and perhaps to be long remembered by them The Note of appreciation i: Library By Gwen Librarian Hunter Fillmore 25 South Utah 100 West Visits Mrs Sandy Monroe teacher at Millard High and her associates the brought children to visit the library and hear stories The children were brought in two groups After they toured the library and viewed the art exhibit they were treated to a story by Mrs Hunter Each child then had the chance to select a book for their group In this way the children learned how to check out books and also how to return them on time Since the books were selected during each child got a special September badge for visiting the library We invite the children to bring in their parents and get the family User Cards up to date Out of town families are asked to pay $5 per family per year for the use of the library Bazaar There has been very good response to the sale of table space for the Library Bazaar on Saturday Oct 22 We pect to have a great variety of gift items on sale by these local vendors The Library is pleased with the wonderful response of patrons of the area who have signed up to bring their delicious home baked items for the benefit of the library fund raising effort Beautiful craft items are also being brought in for the gift table and some fun things have been donated to the rummage will not clude clothes but will include great white elephant gifts etc Sloppy Joes cider and doughnuts will be sold by the library also Remember 10 to 4 pm in the Legion Hall in Fillmore for a great day of early Christmas Shopping and fun supporting the area library Still Checking Family Cards It is the goal of the Library Board to have all the family cards in the file from all towns updated We would like to register as many new users as possible also This is a great bargain! meeting Thursday Oct 20 1988 An art exhibit and lecture by Roger Baker about the Block Printer Everett Ruess in the Millard will be presented Fillmore Library Reading Room All members and the public are invited to attend Gwen Hunter Beverly Roth and Leah Robinson are the committee for this presentation the Ryan Higgs son of Terry and Anita Higgs of Kanosh was notified that his essay was selected as the National winner in the American Legion Auxiliary Essay contest for 6th 7th and 8th grade students throughout the United States Ryan originally submitted his essay as an assignment from Mr Bailey’s English class last spring Ryan received 2nd place awards from bui local and district competition His essay was selected as the 1st place winner on a State level and was then entered in National competition where he also was a first place winner This is a great honor to be selected as the National winner Ryan received cash awards at and is each level of competition grateful for the opportunity and experience afforded him Ryan was presented his National Award and certificate at the local American Legion Auxiliary meeting held on October 10 1988 The award was presented by outgoing
