Show nu Page 2 - Thurs Sept USPS Millard County fflbmmente Well here it is Tuesday night again It has and time to write something been a good week for me and I can’t really put my finger on why I didn’t in fact win a lottery or sweepstake mostly I have dealt with frustrations home repairs house cleaning and such things designed to put a person right over the edge But maybe it feels good to be back to dealing with frustrations instead of letting them make me crazy into I did finally put the aquarium operation complete with fish are supposed to have a (aquariums soothing effect) But for some reason I always thought that fish were low maintenance pets especially with the pump and filter business Well it is not exactly so They have to be fed regular little their and temperatures maintained But what a source of entertainment She drinks out of the for Cleokatra aquarium and just goes nuts over those little creatures that she can’t get to But she had to give it a try the other day and certainly got her dignity dampened She is beginning to show some tolerance to Prisilla Preciously and Precious is being a real pill but very cute about it so we are putting up with her antics I have been enjoying the Olympics on TV well somewhat I would like to see more of the events and less of the replays of the events they are showing I realize this is an expensive venture for the network but with the number of commercials they have I think they could expand their coverage to include more events Also I would like to see competitors from other countries and in events other than just the ones that have strong US participants And some of the interviews just make me shake my head “How does it feel to come in 4th after you have spend your life with your eye on the gold?” I think the competitors show great dignity and should get gold medals for not punching someone who asks such dumb questions But it has been a welcome change from the usual TV offerings For this being the big election year things sure seem quiet I went to the UPA Board meeting Friday and was Motor Vehicle Schedule: Fillmore & Delta weekdays Millard County Assessor’s offices Sept 12 - Oct 6 Local Artists Open Exhibit photography paintings and drawings Fillmore Library Open library hours Sept 22 - 30 West Millard Volleyball 9 am - 5 pm W’hite registration Sage Rec Office Sept 26 29 30 MHS Homecoming Sept 29 Vision Screening 3 & 4 year olds Delta North and South Elems am & - 3 pm Free MUM County The Chronicle Progress USPS tofeliM Data fettMi Mi ThmHw lltaM Publisher Editor - Suun 4t?4 Dutton Editorial iCen Rand at Reporter Large Advertising t Sales Riley Wood Rita Robinson Juke Ward Goertz Legal Sales Design Office Manager Fillmore Evelyn Mallet Deb Greathouse Accounts Receivable Circulation Ward Juke Goertz CircuiationComp CirculatwnProduction' Rita Robinson Commercial Printing Dutton Shelke In Advance Subscriptions In County $1800 per year In County $1000 per 6 months Out of County $2000 per year Out of County $1100 per months PO imU cents Copy Single POSTMASTER Send Address Box 249 Osh Naum Mu fa in Delta hu Utah a Mu changes 84624 Uuti M6M J400 m I MJ OWXtD I t to! 29 1988 u i' asked about the pro and con activity regarding the Tax Initatives I had to say it had been rather quiet here but then most of the energy has been directed to people’s preference regarding the proposed hazardous waste facility The tax initatives really irritate me! Both sides! I see the movement for the initatives as a statement that taxpayers are fed up with what is put in (taxes) and what they see come out the other end In other words “we want more bang for our hard earned buck” And I see the against saying “you dare to question how we spend your tax money well we’ll just hit you where it hurts most with the cuts if they pass” Then I remember the Timpanogas Mental Health Center and wonder why those people aren’t in jail I think they should get double maximum punishment once for breaking the law and again for doing it with tax money and again for depriving all the clients they could have served with the money they pocketed They violated public trust And the human reaction to this kind of situation is “how much more of this goes on and doesn’t get caught and I know as a rarely really punished?” taxpayer if I ever saw corrupt government people pay the price I would less suspicious of what is going on with my tax money And at the JTPA meeting I attended Thursday the subject of education came up (it always does jobs and education go together) and two comments were made that I really tuned in on: Japanese high school graduates are on the same level as US college graduates Only 11 of the college freshmen who are given a 1959 8th grade reading test can pass it And on the same subject but from a different source: projections are that if present trends continue by the year 2000 one in three (1 in 3) adults in the U S will be functionally illiterate And the fact that Utah students usually test higher than the national average does not give me comfort when the national average is so pitiful But all that is another subject for another day Emergency Preparedness Utah Stake 6 - 8:00 pm Delta Middle School 7 Fair Delta pm Central Utah Food Sharing meeting 11:30 am Delta Community Presbyterian Church Sept 30 Hunter Safety Course begins Delta Middle School 7 & 9 pm Register with Delta City Police by Sept 26 3 & 4 yr olds Vision Screening Fillmore Elem am & - 3 pm Free Stephanie Smith and David Nakken wedding reception Sutherland Cultural Hsll 7:30 - 10 pm Oct 3 Outreach program from National Fillmore Gallery of Art 7:30 pm No Library multipurpose room charge everyone welcome Men’s Volleyball league organization Whit Sage Rec 6 pm meeting Office Oct 6 Annual Potato Bash pm MHS cafeteria Oct 7 - Nov 4 Utah Arts Council Traveling exhibition “Block Prints by Everett Ruess” Fillmore Library Oct 8 Orvil and Donna Jeffery 60th Wedding Anniversary pm M E Bird Center 240 West 100 South Delta Oct 9 Sister Faith Thompson mission report Delta 2nd Ward 12:50 pm Oct 11 “Emotions and Diabetes” 7 pm Fillmore Community Med Center Barbara Faigle speaker Blood Pressure Clinic Delta Public Health (Not the regular day) Oct 15 Karen Donohue and James Brinkerhoff wedding open house Pahvant Senior Center Fillmore pm Oct 18 Emotions and Diabetes Delta Com Med Center 7 pm Oct 22 Annual Fillmore Library Christmas Craft Bazaar 10 am - 4 pm Fillmore Legion Hall Call to rent tables Oct 25 Cancer Screening Clinic Contact Public Health for appointment Fillmore and Delta Oct 26 Cancer Screening Clinic Delta for appt call Dear John TO THE EDITOR Greetings from the land of saunas Well it’s four weeks today since I arrived in Finland and I am already completely in love with it The climax occurred of course when we landed at the Helsinki Airport (I must comment on that later) down the Looking through plane’s window we saw trees water more trees more water This was our first glimpse (and had been I might add the continued glimpse) Excitement the descending gateway breathing Finnish air entering the airport My initial reaction was the same as the other 27 exchange students sharing my flight: “Omigosh! These people are ail speaking Finnish What am I doing here?” But as I said that was the initial reaction Now all panic has subsided I can admit that I am very much taken by this country I suppose not many are even vaguely aware of Finland’s history role or culture I know I wasn’t! This place is not exactly the focus of world news or in fact far from it My anything understanding is that Finland has learned the hard way that it is much easier and laid to be even isolated Surely Finns are very much aware of world events they just stay out of it I’ll explain my personal theory (drum roll!) As you are probably aware Finland is strategically placed border a shares It of geographically some 1200 kilometers (How many miles is that?) with the USSR Its history consists of several periods of being ruled by surrounding countries At one time it was actually a part of Sweden (Swedish is still the native language of 5 percent of Finnish peoples and is mandatory for all students to learn in school) For a long period Finland was controlled by Russia The fight for dependence was long and hard for the Finns and now they are content to do their own thing and let the rest of the world do theirs Of course there are exceptions As in the youth of many other countries Finland have an immense fascination for the USA They copy American styles listen to American music wear American brands (I’ve never seen so many Nike and Adidas as here use American on older people) almost forget I’m slang Sometimes miles from home a few thousand because everyone speaks nearly fluent English Most students in my school have had years of English classes beginning at age nine So with the exception of s as “Wan overlooking such Halen” and “werbs and nouns” and being called “Litz” I can pretend I’m speaking “American” This is infinitely simpler than speaking Finnish the national language It’s rated as one of the most difficult languages in the world and I have certainly discovered why It is said the key to any culture is the language Well if this is true Finnish could be a very difficult one to unlock st The alphabet is basically the with the additional letters “a” and “o” but the problem is all of the twists and turns of daily speech Finnish is not closely related to any other language in the world Its closest European relative is Hungarian and that is only as similar as Persian is to English One interesting aspect of this language is that the stress is without exception always on the first syllable of a word This is where my notation comes in about “Helsinki” very quickly learn ed to say this word correctly In Am erican we say “hel SINK I eve r get that corrected in a hurry Stress is always on the first syllable “HE L sink ee” Now you know lifficult The most part of the language is defi nitely the suffixes they use in place of preposition and such Instead of using five words to say “I am in the library” they use just two ” “Olen kirjastossa Another import ant fact is that every letter is enunciate d Many words are very similar so if ev try letter is not pronounced the meaning of the word is is An example entirely changed “kukka” which mean “flower” and kuka" which mean “who” But the language is coming very rapidly I’m ravenously and meeting this challeng it’s extremely exciting though frustrating at times There is no way I could tell about Finland without at leait t briefly mentioning the sauna This :ould easily be one of— if not THE mwost important It is a aspect of the Finnish ciulture very old and sacred part of life here Did you know “sauna” is a Finnish word though pronounced differently? Every single home and put lic building in Finland is equipped with a sauna In fact in early days the saun a was often built before the home was even completed That’s how importani t it is to the Finns It’s as much a part of their lives as eating cornflakes and brus hing their teeth I’ll explain the procedure Fi rst of all you must remove all of your clothes and jewelry (otherwise it will buim your skin) It is customary for women to go into the bath in one group and t te men in another but this is not always necessary Then after a cold shower you enter the sauna The usual temperatu re is about 200 degrees F The sauna r consists of either a wood burning: or electric stove with rocks on top of it Wide wooden benches line the wa Is Here you sit and molder (not literal ly of course) Since the purpose of le sauna is to make people sweat wat thrown on the stove and rocks t 3 create steam Your sauna bath can last from LI minutes to an hour however long you desire At frequent intervals whenever you find the heat unbearable you have several options you can take a cold shower jump in a lake (There are plenty of them) the sea or the snow I have yet to try that one! Then it’s back into the sauna for another spell This activity is fast becoming one of my most loved pastimes Mom would it be too much to ask if you could have an authentic Finnish sauna built for me by the time I return? The weather is rapidly cooling Nearly half of Finland lies in the North Pole therefore the sun pulls the same stunts as in places like Alaska When I first arrived here it remained broad daylight until about 10 pm then suddenly darkness would crash in Now the night occurs more gradually and the sun sets at 8:30 or so just like in Utah I’m looking forward to the winter months when the sun never completely rises Wow how interesting I must admit I am not However looking forward to the approaching temperatures The Finns have all advised me to take advantage of our present weather while I still can it won’t last much longer It’s already becoming noticeably cooler at nights Brrr It makes me shiver just thinking about what’s in store for me I’ll just tough it out in the sauna farmers would often form informal cooperatives and work together travelling from farm to farm by Fred M Hayes Park Ranger As the first frosts of the new season seem to be knocking at the door those who have labored long and hard on the farm in the garden and about the orchard are beginning to enjoy the bounties of a fruitful harvest In preparation for the long cold winter which lies ahead many of our people are busy canning fruits and vegetables which will be a welcome treat in the months to come Farmers are busying themselves bringing in the last loads of hay and the final sheaves of grain while the ranchers are making preparations to bring the livestock out of the mountains and onto their winter ranges Only when all of these tasks have been completed and our cellars are full will we allow ourselves to accept the onset of winter Though most of us are not as dependant upon a successful harvest as our pioneer forefathers wee we still derive a sense of comfort knowing we have prepared our households for winter and that “all is well” Harvest time for the early settlers of our area was not only a time of hard work but also a time of great celebration and thanksgiving Neighboring denial HOWARD FAMILY QUESTIONNAIRE In order to determine whether or not a drinking problem exists in your famiwell is to check over a list of test ly it and answer each one questions Do you worry about your spouse’s drinking? What about the tax initiatives? Right now my concern is more with the long term problems that could result from some of the formulas that are a part of the initiatives There seems to be fuel there for contention misunderstandings and added expenses to government Taxpayers in Delta City pay taxes allocated to ten different entities Who s going to decide and how are they to decide how the tax money is to b: divided among these entities Another worry is the way in which the language of the intiatives tie the har ids of local government the i it closest to the people More and mor e decision making power is being n over by state and federal take gove rnments Most of the towns in Millard County and small towns throughout the state will not be directly affected by the proat this time perty tax limitation However most special improvement mosquito abatement water fire recreation etc—will be The gas tax roll back could mean that Delta will no longer have money to do street rebuilding as has been done the last three or four years We will be back to patching and make do Small town and rural Utah will be hardest hit by a vote for the tax initiatives because they have fewer resources for other income Those who gain most will be corporations and big business Ruth Hansen You and Your Child: Success in School by JIM CAMPBELL Utah Education Association President Many pi irents visit their children’s schools bu 't how many analyze what they see?
