surveying and area ploring the Lake Bonneville Tabernacle Hill and other geological points of interest in east Millard County The previous day the group had plored sites on the western side of the UGMS was our contact and a member of the group Fitz Davis personally acSue and me answering companied questions and sharing his knowledge 1 he following report is a combination of information taken from the UGMS Survey Notes and my publication observations In order to decipher geological history and events that occurred Jack and Oviatt Kansas State University Fitzhugh (Fitz) D Davis Utah Geological and Mineral Survey have collaborated on a mapping that had never previously been done Their work continues in western Utah and as Genevieve At“addresses a great wood explained unresolved problem in understanding Utah’s geologic history: what has been going on in the basins of western Utah for the last 15 million years?” Oviatt and Davis focused their attention on the Sevier LakeDeltaMillard and Juab Counties’ basins The project was funded under a program entitled COGEOMAP: Cooperative Geologic Mapping Project According to the article in the issue of Survey Notes written by Oviatt and Davis COGEOMAP was “designed to support basic and apby state mapping plied geologic surveys and the US geological Geological Survey” It is “aimed at obtaining basic geologic information that can be used in studies oi mineral or energy resources geologic hazards or Geologic maps geologic engineering are fundamental sources for most and state geologic investigations geological surveys must have a broad data base available for making reliable and some times quick assessments or decisions” Utah’s COGEOMAP project has focused on Quaternary (the geological period following the Tertiary in the Cenozoic Era comprising the Pleistocene and Recent Epochs) deposits in the western part of the state Particular sites included are large areas in the central part of the Sevier desert around Sevier Lake south into the Black Rock Desert west into the Long Ridge and Whirlwind Valley area Fish Springs Flat in Juab County The project includes mapping of deposits from Lake Bonneville and volcanic deposits and activities at Ice Springs Pavant Butte and Tabernacle Hill The study and mapping are important for several reasons The deposits cover more than half of the Basin and Range affecting the structuie ot the land These Quaternary deposits also Freak accident injures woman by Dawn Carder A freak accident at Gunnison Bend Reservoir on Friday July 1988 caused a thirty woman to suffer serious injuries The incident occurred at approximately 3:20 pm according to Millard County Sheriff’s Deputy Ron Lange investigating officer Andrea Lautenschlager of Phoenix Arizona was attending a family reunion at the reservoir The action of closing the hatch type rear door of her vehicle caused a gun to discharge (Deputy Lange reported that Ms was unaware of the Lautenschlager presence of the single action 357 handgun) The victim was struck in the abdomen the accident Ms Following Lautenschlager was transported by ambulance to the Delta Community Medical Center From there she was taken to Utah Valley Hospital where she underwent surgery Deputy Lange expressed his up preciation for civilian assistance with both the crowd and the victim a the scene of the accident fluctuations ot both the Sevier and Great Salt lakes it is important to understand water changes over long periods of time Both earthquake and volcanic hazards in Utah exist Approximately 700 years ago the Ice Springs cinder cones and lova flows erupted and eruptions occurred at Pavant Butte about 16000 years ago and at Tabernacle Hill 13500 vearx ago knowledge of past volcanic actmtv is
