Show Pge 8 Millard County USPS Thurs Feb 26 1987 Own a Piece of the Debt The chicken and the egg business by Dennis Hinkamp Information Writer Utah State University My first recollections of saving (forced saving) are of the US Savings Bonds I received as a child from my At the time parents and grandparents it was just an impressive looking piece of paper that I couldn’t spend for five years Little did I know I owned a piece of the national debt Besides the fact that the bonds constitute a loan to the government they are an attractive low cost secure low risk investment according to Dr Jean Lown consumer economist in Utah State University’s college of family life Lown says however savings bonds have changed substantially since our childhoods For one thing $25 face value savings bonds are no longer available--thminimum is $50 face value for the new series EE bonds The new bonds cost half the face value so a $50 bond costs $25 Secondly since 1982 the interest rate and the date the bonds mature are variable Lown says the rates change and could be higher in the future Rates change every six months on May and Nov She says you still need to hold the bond for at least five years to earn the current guaranteed six percent interest rate At this rate the bond would mature (be worth face value) in 12 years but it could mature sooner if rates go up in the future Lown says The consumer economist says there are tax advantages to investing iin saving bonds since interest earned on them is exempt from state taxation You also have several options of when to pay federal taxes on the bonds’ interest: pay tax each year as the interest accrues pay tax when you cash in the bond or further defer taxation by converting the Series EE bonds into long term Series HH bonds Lown says you should be aware that interest is credited on these bonds every six months from the purchase date of the bond For instance if you bought the bond Aug interest would be credited every Feb and Aug So if you forget this and cash in your bond on July 31 instead of waiting one day you would lose an entire six months interest She says Bonds are relatively easy to replace if lost but you should keep the bonds in a safe deposit box and keep a record of the bond number and date issued so you can keep track of maturity and interest crediting dates Bonds are an old familiar form of vestment that deserve another look by Jillyn Smith Science Writer Utah State University When I was a child sometimes in the spring a big noisy flat box with air holes in it arrived at the post office in my hometown People could hear it as soon as they stepped into the lobby to pick up their mail and we could peek through the service window and see it The box was full of chicks peeping and pecking and and scratching sometimes the box was addressed to my grandmother When my grandmother opened the box she let me choose a chick of my own and I marked it with ink to identify it As it grew into a chicken it merged into the flock Some of the chickens ended up in noodle soup and others of them became laying hens providing eggs This business is something to think about: A hen lays an egg A human takes the egg away The hen lays another egg A human takes the egg away The hen lays another egg A human takes it away This goes on for a long time The cakes human has eggs for breakfast to sell by the dozen puddings-egAre hens dumb or what? This seemed to me as good a question as ‘‘What came first the chicken or the egg?” (and infinitely better than “Why did the chicken cross the Consumer road?”) Later I learned that some birds are “determinate” layers: they lay just so and many eggs Take them away nothing more happens No more eggs Needless to say these species are not interesting to poultry farmers Others are “indeterminate” layers: they keep laying until they get a then they clutch together cubate their brood Keep taking their eggs away and they patiently keep try ing to get the right amount accumulated Scientists have taken away eggs of many bird species to see what would happen In one experiment a flicker which normally lays 6 to 8 eggs was tricked into laying 71 eggs in 73 days by a scientist who removed eggs as soon as they were laid always leaving one “nest egg” Domestic fowl selected and bred for even better indeterminate laying can be induced to lay an egg almost every day of the year As for which came first the chicken or the egg it is really not a paradox The answer is: the egg Long before birds came on the terrestrial scene the miniature shelled DELTA SUTHERLAND HINCKLEY Eddys Barben Ph: Dora Rose Sharon Western Ph: Ph: Archie Barben traveled to Tucson Arizona last week for three days with his son Keith Barben and five friends in Keith’s van to attend the Mineral and Rock Show There were people from all over the world participating in the show They were set up to sell precious stones and gold specimens It was all The trip included very interesting Phoenix Blyth California Needles California Las Vegas and lots of teresting places along the way The group enjoyed the fun trip together They covered a lot of territory in a short time A week ago Colleen and Joe Stewart spent Saturday in Monroe visiting with Cindy and Mathew Mills Arch and Eddys Barben made a trip to St George on Friday to attend the basketball game between Pine View and Dixie High Schools All taxable income must be reported Although wages and salaries are the most common types of income subject to federal tax the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) says that there are many other kinds of income that must also be reported on your tax return due April 15 1987 Examples of other taxable income include: Interest and stock dividends paid to investors State income tax refunds and sales of stock bonds or other property Sick pay benefits not covered by surance paid for by the recipient that Unemployment compensation exceeds $12000 for a single person or $18000 in the case of married couples The value of prizes and winnings from raffles races and other forms of gambling Bonuses and tips To ensure that all income is correctthe IRS routinely compares ly reported individual tax returns with income formation provided by payors the art of drawing sufficient conclusions from insufficient Samuel Butler premises" "Life is obstetric primitive vertebrae allowed more animals to reproduce on land We all know why the chicken crossed the road But here’s another question to think about: “is a hen just an egg’s way of making another egg?” until it was too late to do anything about it? part we haven’t been profitable people We may have difficulty in justifying the space we occupy and the substance we consume The greatest good is not passive any more than the greatest evil is Much that is missing in happiness comes under the category of things we should have done but didn’t do Our talents that we fail to develop opportunities we let slide by the kindness and consideration we might have offered others There are those who were entitled to our love and we failed to give it the things we should have taught our children that now they haven’t learned The reachable possible deeds we didn’t do could come under the category of deeds of omission Doing things when we should do them is the It may essence of all our opportunities not be quite comfortable to account for the
