decisions that affect our children in school are made by school board members Parents may therefore want to take note of a recent survey by the National School Boards Association showing that male and female school board members have divergent views in determining local school policy The survey published in the January issue of the American School Board Journal says that a majority of women board members see themselves best qualified in curriculum and instruction while their male counterparts say they are best qualified in money issues Both male and female board members acknowledge as their principal role However the board survey notes that women members are more likely than men to expand their activities beyond the board’s role and involve themselves in the operation of the schools As a result the increasing number of women on school boards (now at 36 percent) may change the way school systems are managed Both male and female members regard adequate financial support for schools as their primary concern They are also concerned about the increasing number of state mandates that and usurp school board authority prerogatives on policy and operating issues How well are school board members educated? percent of all board members have at least a college degree The typical board member is married has children in school and has a family income of $40000 to $50000 That’s a glimpse into the views of some very important men and women who make big decisions about the quality of education our children will have Calendar Community Feb 12 - March 10 Works from Museum of Church and under to get all the way around without falling off My father had a pole horse fence made from logs without bark logs notched on both ends from our log house in Oak City There were poles that had been cut in some canyon useless for anything but a horse fence The horse fence wandered in an oval in our back yard It just stood there challenging me to walk it I would hold my arms out straight and teeter back and forth If I fell and skinned my knees and elbows I just got back on It was a pole fence addiction My friends knew that I had this great thing a pole fence They came and we walked it together after school V’ got so we could almost run all the way around and not fall off I would try to get some of the busy folks to come and watch the great accomplishment A child was lucky in the 1920’s if he had a plain pole fence wandering through her yard just standing there empty challenging So when you see your child or grandchild walking some fence line or roof line just know he is keeping trust with that old urgency that shows up in every nine year old by Mary Henrie JOHN WATERBURY Dear John Letters pm 26 pm Sandra Cropper & Tim Topham wedding reception M E Bird Center Delta pm Dear John: I drink a little but I don’t really think it’s a problem I’ve been to a doctor about some depression and I have some pills to take but I don’t think that’s a problem for me either In fact I’m not really sure what my problem is All I know is that I’m not very happy most of the time Out of It Dear Out of It: From your letter it doesn’t sound that you’re too “out of it” A little confused maybe but that’s probably all First of all let me say that much of our unhappiness is the result of an incorrect assumption that the rest of the world is happy When we’re down it seems that we’re the only one who is down Everyone and everything seems much happier than we are Again that’s an incorrect assumption In reality everyone has their share of burdens and hassles Everyone has their aches and pains but most of the time we’re unaware of this because our attention is focused on ourselves from a negative point of view Anxiety states such as stress and unhappiness are often the of result of increased f awareness ourselves to the detriment of interpersonal relationships With this in mind it’s been said that a person wrapped up in himself makes a very small package When this happens our negative feelings intensify themselves The goal in this case seems to be an application of several positive actions on your part Ultimately you are the only one responsible for your happiness With this in mind try the following steps: Act like you think a happy person is supposed to act and try to think as a happy person is supposed to think Behavior is not all that complicated It is possible to act yourself into a new way of thinking or think yourself into a new way of acting So be optimistic Identify the positive things in life Too often all we concentrate on is the negative Take time to smell the roses they’re everywhere when you’re look ing for them Don’t set your goals too high to begin with It always takes time to turn things around so do so one step at a time Don’t worry about trying to please Lincoln said Abraham everyone “You can please all the people part of the time and part of the people all of the time” Listen to criticism and when it applies learn from it When it doesn’t disregard it Decide what you stand for Too often we’re unsure of our personal values and expectations and as a result we have very few guidelines to direct our growth and development Take responsibility to make things happen It’s too easy to let them happen When you do the latter you’ll end up in a rut not in a groove When you are committed to making things happen you’ll find a sense of involvement and a feeling of accomplishment Avoid being critical and angry with others and avoid those who are like that These emotions pull you down ftey color your perception and distort reality It has been said that if you want to be miserable hate someone Without spreading yourself too thin get involved with a variety of terests The world is full of such opportunities but only when you look for them Life is a prophecy If you decide that life is exciting and worth living you’ll find it so Stay busy help others and find ways to be of service When you shift your attention to other people you’ll find you don’t have time to be unhappy or depressed And finally remember the Serenity Prayer: “God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change courage to change the things I can and wisdom to know the difference Success in life is CONFIDENTIALLY: simple Keep your shoulder to the wheel your eye on the ball your nose to the grindstone you feet on the ground your hands busy your chin up and your eyes straight ahead Bike theft saddens family It’s been a sad time around our house the last few days because of someone else’s greed Our son Kevin has had his heart set on a wonderful new bike After several months of odd jobs he had earned 75 percent of the money needed for this dream bike As a Valentine’s surprise we got the bike for him He had his prize bike 5 days Call Geno: TEENAGE Mail fraud still a problem As of late several people have asked me about mail fraud and what they can do about it For the most part what you order the mail is ordered from through reliable and honest companies They have been in business for years and are W’hen problems customer oriented arise a simple note to them will usually get the problem fixed for you However if there is a way to make money with little or no effort there are those who will be glad to take that money and run Here are some tips to watch for Telephone soliciting has become a popular way to advertise Be sure of what you order Always ask the caller to repeat back what you have ordered to ensure that they and you understand what was ordered Don’t be into buying something you don’t want Ask about return privileges and guarantees Some scams are done by phone as they are easy to set up easy to move and hard to trace It’s also hard to prosecute because it’s their word against yours Asking for a written confirmation to precede the order is not out of line If you don’t like it when it arrives return the item and at least use our service to show that it was returned 2 Don’t give credit card numbers or checking account numbers out over the phone 3 When merchandise is faulty or not received within a reasonable amount of time weeks) write the company to let them know You may want to send photocopies of any checks that have cleared your bank Keep copies of all Never send original correspondence documents such as the cleared check If they don’t respond to this letter within a reasonable amount of time send another letter again outlining the problem but give them a time limit to respond Tell them that if they don’t respond by that time you will turn the matter over to the Postal Inspection Service Send this one Certified Mail with a return receipt If they don’t resgo see your local pond to this Postmaster Remember most companies are honest and sell good products at a fair price So if you have someone contact ofmail either or and by by phone you fer you that bargain of all bargains if it’s too good to be true then it probably is and you should proceed with caution rooms and remind these elderly patients that someone does care Thank you again The Fillmore Hospital Staff and the Pink Ladies Auxiliary My Opinion What a Great Place to Live by Gwen Hunter Where else in the world could a small for the band together community benefit of one person and come up with over $22000? The love and concern shown in the recent drive to help Darlene Fowler with her recovery was totally unbelievable therapy Besides money donated there were services and a lot of individual hard work The organizers of this project Linda and Jack Davies and Chuck and Susan Ferguson and their committee are certainly to be congratulated This is an outstanding example of “community spirit” more often than not exhibited in small towns of rural Utah It is a credit to the pioneers of the area that they were able to instill these same qualities of honoring work in their children and a credit to the who have shown the same concern for other people Volunteerism is a way of life for the this were people in Millard County--i- f not the case we would not have many of the things we enjoy which make our lives richer and more enjoyable If we had to pay for all the entertainment sports programs scout leaders clubs etc we never would be able to afford them (Volunteer sports involves hundreds of kids and leaders) The West Millard Cultural Council and the Fillmore Civic Arts Council both offer many programs to the area at a very reduced price along with the opportunity of developing talents of local people One of the goals of both these groups is to help develop local else does talent come from but somewhere “local”? Our young people deserve the chance just as much as city kids or some other rural area Another case in point is the new library in Fillmore Without the contributions of labor and money the new facilities could not exist The citizens have been working for over 15 years to get a new building which would provide the kind of service needed With the cooperation of the city councils the mayors and the library boards patrons now have a lovely spacious building Taxes alone could never have done it The businessmen of Fillmore’s main street have gone way beyond the call of duty by paying for the new sidewalks The only tax money that went into that project is that portion of the sidewalk fronting city property and the cornering in the three intersections A person who moved into our area a year ago made the comment that he had never seen such involved busy doing a dozen things The activity is available if a person wants to do something There must still be some great cause of activity to get involved with and enliven our lives "Exporting” great people has been the practice in the past (I’ve never been anywhere in the world where I didn’t meet someone outstanding who came from Millard County!)- -a habit we if we can only get hope to break enough new industry and keep what we have to support all who want to live in this area Now is the time for all of us to keep up the good work and make an effort to bring in new jobs and more great people I appreciate the opportunity I had to “move in” and to remain I’ve loved it all Middle America Search for “Middle America” Women “Frequently” Just for Today Chronicle Progress with information about the bike It was taken from our front yard Thursday evening between 7 and 9 pm The bike is an all white with pink lettering “Hutch” It is different from other “Hutches” in town because of certain markings around the handle bars It also has a blue chain around the seat stem If you have any information on this You would bike please call make our son very happy Glenda and John Otto Thanks for the flowers by Bob Thomas An editor looking over samples of these columns and contemplating their purchase asked whether I ever wrote about women I answered “Yes M’am” The editor Do one for me she said I had trouble trying to pick one woman out of the dozens I’d met out on the road All were interesting to me in one fashion or another I spent the better part of a morning remembering some of them and what they had contributed to whatever it was I was learning about "Middle America” Rosemary White of Dallas Texas She’s an airplane came to mind broker When one of the big airlines puts enough miles on a plane it offers it up for sale Ms White then begins to looks around for a buyer She usually finds one in Mexico Africa or dia They usually end up with small airlines or with private companies Her work Sometimes an individual takes her all over the world and often at someone else’s expense It sounds like a nice job and I don’t know anyone else doing it I met Wanda Wiley at Bob’s Cafe in NC She’s a wire splicer Lincolnton with the Bell Telephone System Just about the prettiest little thing I ever saw in hooks and a safety belt She liked the work because it kept her out doors She said it was good for her complexion Valerie Vokae is into property management in Phoenix AZ She’s a millionaire and not yet into her 40s She owned a weekend cabin up in the Bradshaw Mountains not too far from where I spent a lazy summer We drank a lot of coffee together from a safe distance She has a Doberman for a constant companion Sue Dutson is the publisher of the Chronicle Progress in Delta Utah She’s about as smart a person as you’re likely to bump into in the short span of a lifetime She’s my kind of newspaper She executive 4 works at it (I think I fell in love with her but wanderlust caught up with me before I made a fool out of myself) Roxane Hickman of Pueblo CO is I the absolute best know after 30 years in the business She’s 25 Enough said Bea Swallow of Old Saybrook is a Conn r driver Soaking wet she Her rig weighs weighs 90 pounds 40000 pounds She handles it like a sportscar Mrs Elsie Rogers of West Palm Beach Fla is one of my favorite ladies She’s English and the widow of an American businessman She commutes between a home in Florida and another on the outskirts of London We had lunch every day for about two weeks while she regaled me with stories about international travel Then she flew to London I’d guess her to be 80 Karen Perkins of Chino Valley Ariz is one of the Southwest’s outstanding painters and photographers She’s not more than 30 Lives on a ranch surrounded by animals She sent me a Christmas card one year with three cowboys in the roles of the Magi Beautiful!
