I say recently because these problems appear to be relatively new It seems that everywhere I turn nowadays everyone is talking about these problems I may be naive but I don’t think that things used to be this bad Were they? Perplexed Dear Perplexed: While the recent attention to the problems of chemical dependency is new the actual problem goes back to the beginning of recorded history As early as 3700 BC people were not only drinking but they were building breweries The first one was built in Egypt Later on such notables as Alexander the Great and his father Phillip became notorious drinkers and allegedly Alexander died in a drinking contest Here in America distilled quor has been around since 1607 and twelve years later came the first “dry laws” Public inebriates were punished by fines and being put in the public halters to be ridiculed Throughout history drinking was a problem for the Army and Navy and warships often carried twice as much rum as water” Nationwide crusades were launched as early as 1842 and prohibition failed in the 1920’s No these problems aren’t new and the solutions will not be easily developed or accepted Because we suffer from human nature we fall prey to We are illogical to many problems some extent We run our lives by our emotions We tolerate certain weaknesses and we ignore or deny others The problems caused by alcohol and drug abuse are finally becoming tolerable Not because they are new but because society has ignored them tolerated them and surprisingly even encouraged them And our apathy or resistance to facing the problem would probably have continued if our youth had not become involved When they began to use and abuse various substances it gave us all a cause to sup- - by Jillyn Smith Science Writer Utah State University We could have been beetles We could have been tiger beetles rhinoceros beetles tortoise beetles bombardier beetles beetles soldier beetles seed beetles scarab beetles or carpet beetles We could have been beetles beetles cigarette drugstore beetles click beetles dust beetles snout beetles beetles longhorn ground beetles or bacon beetles We could have been dung beetles beetles beetles diving whirligig ladybird beetles rove beetles dwarf beetles boat beetles museum beetles flower beetles or flour beetles You get the idea Lots of living things are beetles They have two pair of wings The hard outer pair called elytra cover them like a symphony conductor’s tailcoat They use a gauzy underpair to fly with There’s a lot of variation on the basic beetle them One of the stories in biology is about the great British naturalist JBS Haldane When he was asked by a theologian what he had discovered about the Creator from a study of His handiwork Haldane answered: “An inordinate fondness for beetles” Most of the kinds of living things are insects and of those the beetles are the first of the foremost At least 300000 species of beetles are known to science and many times that may be scurrying around on the canopies of trees in port Something to focus our energies on We are always most successful it seems when we have a cause So fortunately or unfortunately as the case may be we now have a clearly identifiable cause And only the future will be able to judge how well we rise to the occasion Dear Readers Have you ever noticed that growth achieved only by overcoming an obstacle? The only problem with this law is that not everyone is successful in meeting the challenge For one reason or another they fail In fact some people make a habit of failing and they seem to accept this as a way of life They tell themselves “I’ve always been this way I can’t change That’s just the way I am” With this perception of life the laws of growth become invalid and continued progression becomes impossible Life becomes mundane and dull and unchallenging Slowly and unknowingly they lose the motivation to improve and grow They begin to accept this state of inertia and even find it easy to justify their behavior Nothing could be more of a loss than to fail to grow to one’s full potential For some human nature seems to dictate a path of least resistance They daydream of being able to accomplish all their objectives in life once and for all From that point on it’s their intention to coast They don’t seem to that the only way you understand coast-- is down hill Happiness isn’t something you achieve once and retain from that point on Happiness is a by product of striving for an objective A poet once wrote that man’s reach should exceed his grasp In other words that we should be continually striving to grow to accomplish to crease our potential In this way happiness is a constant companion As I mentioned not everyone persists in the struggle for growth Many fall by the wayside Many are never able to the rewards of success appreciate because they choose a different road Or they’re on the right road but they’re going in the wrong direction Or as Will Rogers put it “Even if you’re on the right track you’ll get run over if you just sit there” is There is in human Confidentially: nature generally more of the fool than the wise Bacon !! PROBLEMS? Call Geno: 5 We would like to thank the people Millard County for their overin support of response whelming Darlene “Iodine” Fowler It was an spiration to all of ius to see people give from the heart the way these people have for Darlene Originally we thought that it would to raise the be nearly impossible $20000 needed from local sources Yet in less than a month more than that amount was raised because these people really cared We may sometimes complain about the shortcomings of our community and perhaps rightfully so But our experience with this benefit for Darlene has shown up that in spite of these oc of East tropical forests unknown to humans Is it worth it to locate and describe all the kinds of beetles? Or all the kinds of flies for that matter? YES say the scientists louder and louder these days YES Human activity especially the clearing of tropical forests is eliminating many species that contain enormous species ecological and genetic information before we even get to meet them before we figure out how everything fits together before we understand the scheme of things With the loss of species who knows what we are losing for humanity? Who knows how we are disrupting the whole living network? From 19 individuals of a single kind of tree in Panama one scientist recently collected more than 1200 different species of beetles Some were herbivores eating the tree others were carnivores eating the herbivores others ate the fungi growing on the Some tree others were scavengers were probably pollinators Loss of that tree species would mean loss of an interdependent intricate web of life Small obscure creatures that don’t engender much fondness from most are the foundation that people ultimately supports all life including us And yes WE could have been a Junebug or a Spanish fly or a beaver flea You got it They’re actually all beetles have a rough time with the Greyhound breed of dog Dogcatcher's have been clocked running at over 41 miles per hour casional differences the people really care and are ready to stand up and unite to help someone in need Without singling out any one person we would like to thank everyone who was involved in this effort The impressive thing is not what any one dividual contributed but rather that so many came together to help however they were able We wish our best for Darlene and her family and I am sure I can say without any doubt that the people of East Millard stand behind you with their hearts Jack and Linda Davies Chuck and Susan Ferguson My Opinion Look before you tax! by DeMonte Washburn A few ideas for streamlining state which will and local governments enable them to conform within the boundries of the Utah taxpayers ability to pay and which will provide a tax services without necessary increase First cut $50000000 from the State of School’s budget Superintendent This bureaucracy with their almost $100000000 budget is far in excess of the needs of a poor state like Utah The contribution of this giant bureaucracy to quality education is at best negligable and accidental Many of their activities Let the education are superfluous whizz kids in this bureaucracy return to the classrooms where perhaps they to quality can make a contribution education Second likewise there is excessive fat in every superintendent of school administrative staff in the state Depending on the size of the district cut $1000000 to $10000000 from only the administrative budget of each district in the state Also let these educators do what they were trained to do by returning them to the classroom as teachers This could reduce our state budget by $50000000 to $75000000 Third despite the cries wails and threats of the president of the U of U there is much room for improving efficiency at that institution as well as at all our state colleges and universities A good friend who was a professor of sociology at the U of U for years related to me examples of inefficiency at our institutions of higher learning Reduce the budget for higher learning by $50000000 Fourth outlaw and dissolve all Redevelopment Agencies in the state of Utah and return all their funds back to the state’s general fund RDAs have proven they waste tax dollars that they are not cost effective that they destroy small business which is essential for a properous state economy and most importantly their very existence is based on an immoral concept This would return millions to our state tax coffers Fifth do an audit on the state road commission I have heard of several examples of waste and probably fraud Sixth roll back one to Five years the salary of all elected and appointed who are personnel governmental a salary over receiving presently $30000 a year This would reduce the state budget by several millions Note that my suggestions will not harm the poor nor the elderly nor the low to middle income wage earner nor the farmer nor the small businessman Also note that there is no suggestion to cut kindergarten or decrease the pay of teachers who really determine the quality of our educational system or to take services from the handicapped and needy It does however impact the over paid inefficient elected and who have appointed top bureaucrats for years deceived and iyisled Utah and Taxpayers iwith inappropriate often misleading statistical comparisons and threats of doom if their tax demands are not met These persons are not experts they have no skill for leading Utah through difficult economic times and they are not worth their salary New column is a new weekly “My Opinion” feature of the editorial page Readers are
