No doubt you’ve heard the jokes about the “real” cost of a wood stove You know by the time you b' y a stove stove pipe cut a hole in your roof then rent or buy a chain saw and truck and pay for the medical bills for nearly cutting off your toe well maybe it’s not such a bargain after all Many conservation measures are not all they’re cracked up to be We often neglect the lower cost energy conservation techniques in favor of the more ones according to less conventional associate proDr LaRae Chatelain fessor of home economics and consumer education at Utah State University Chatelain says active solor equipment can save energy but it may take many years before the money you save on energy bills exceeds your outlay on In other words these the equipment methods are not nearly as "cost effective” as simple caulking and weather stripping around doors and windows and adding insulation to ceilings and walls She says even simpler are small lifestyle changes such as opening or closing your drapes and windows to turning thermostats regulate heat down on furnaces and water heaters She adds that turning off lights and heat in unused rooms is a simple energy saver According to surveys done in eight western states storm and double pane windows and interior window coverings are popular choices for reducing energy consumption but Chatelain says unless they are sealed properly they are not very cost effective Also the much less expensive method of covering windows with plastic can be just as effective while being less expensive "Our studies of attitudes toward energy indicate that despite the lessening of media attention to energy issues people still consider energy costs a serious situation and 'are willing to make some effort toward conserving energy” she says has administration The Reagan deemphasized energy conservation so there are no federal tax credits for to additions your energy conserving home but there still are state tax credits available You can deduct 25 percent renewable the cost of of $1500 to up energy source additions to your home biomass includes solar This and wind generated hydroelectric energy devices The prizes are picked up by the Delta Drug is open Monday through Saturday from 9 am until 7 pm A pharmacist is on call after hours for Jim purposely whatever is needed chose to live only two blocks away for he wanted to be near the store When Jim is away or has a day off Jeff Jones a pharmacist and a member of the Riverton Corporation covers Cona registered pharmacist is sequently Always on duty Many changes have been made in the The store by Jim and the corporation place was completely remodeled and all new fixtures were used The inventory and a has been increased by very large gift area ($30000 worth of inventory) has been added Everything possible has been done to ensure fast dependable service A pharmacy computer was purchased and is used which enables the pharmacist to keep all the family records (allergies etc) as well as insurance statistics and records There are many things about his work that Jim enjoys such as the teraction between and relationships established with the pharmacist and doctors and dentists Jim does admit that he appreciates these more in a small town for he really gets to know the doctors and dentists Together he feels that they provide better service to the patientcustomer Equally important to Jim Pierson is getting to know the people who become his steady customers and those who may only being driving through town is helpful! He A pleasing personality feels that it is absolutely essential for him to be accessible for people need a pharmacist on whom they can rely at all times The pharmacist serving as a needs to prosource of information mote customer confidence When confidence and trust are established people tend to stay with one druggist This allows the latter to maintain personal and family records of medical histories including allergies "I guess that I'm what is called an It’s difficult for me to separate myself from my job even know that such separation is though necessary" Jim says of himself Although Utah does not require pharmacists to attend continuing education courses Jim does attend the sessions sponsored by the state four times a year New drugs are put on the market all the time and he believes it is impor- - different for neither had previously ed in a small town (Barbara was born in England and had lived most of her life in San Diego spending summers in Sandy where she met Jim) They had many things to consider in a short period of time! The Pierson’s first child David was a year old at the time of the initial visit Barbara had given up her position with the bank and she was enjoying being at home with her son A move to Delta would allow all of them to adopt a moie relaxed lifestyle The town appeared to be a nice place in which to be and slay offering opportunity for the Piersons to grow as a family Professionally a move was attractive to Jim If he decided to take the job managing a store in Delta for the corit was understood that he poration would be eiven the opportunity to buy within a specified period of time He would have to prove himself but he felt that he had good backing and training The possibility of eventually owning his own store was most appealing After ten years of working for someone else he decided it was time to try things on his own and to aim for professional independence The decision was made The business opportunities were good the Piersons were most favorably impressed with Delta and its people and they liked the wide open spaces Jim began his new 1984 job on July iving conditions weie somewhat rough for Jim during his first three months in Delta Barbara and David stayed in Sandy waiting to sell their home so Jim "made do” sleeping etc in a spare room at the store It was as he related with a chuckle an intei esting existence! Deltans had known the store for many years as Baker Drug for it had originally been owned and operated by the Baker family Mike Thomas bought the business from the Bakers and he operated the store until his death Mike’s family continued to own and manage the store until it was purchased by the Riverton Corporation After the sale the store became Delta Drug or Jim Pierson managing the store involves a variety of responsibilities He gets guidelines from the corporation-- a general outline of duties— but he is basically on his own when it comes to management and decision making lie is in charge of hiring employees conducting staff meetings making policies for the store ordering products and Chef’s Palace Too & m Positive Outlook Found at Delta Drug by Dawn Carder service and a friendly Cheerfulness atmosphere await you at Delta Drug Jim Pierson The pharmacistmanager and his employees Rayola Smith Marsha Peterson Mickey Carey and Eleanor Rics do all that is humanly possible to accomodate the customers be it In short a trip to the drugstore for a prescription gift or cosmetics becomes a most pleasurable experience Pleasing people and thinking positively arc necessary goals for Jim Pierson Appearing to be a natural optimist he fosters good will with his easy smile his ability to laugh at himself und his relaxed manner as he fills prescriptions and runs the business ricndlincss to customers is the primary objective that is encouraged and stre ed in store meetings for Jim genuinely wants visitors to the area plus regular customers to feel comfortable and to want to return Originally from Murray Jim grew up in Sandy One of his first jobs was woiking in a drugstore where he enIt was joyed the happy atmosphere such a fun job for him that he decided to become a pharmacist He was seventeen cars old at the time After graduating from Jordan High School Jim attended the University of Utah There he earned a Bachelor of Science Degree and then went on to graduate from the School of Pharmacy The two degrees required five years of study and an internship in a drugstore in Sandy While still in school Jim was offered a position in a pharmacy in Rivcrton-h- is first real job! He actually began work before graduation although he had to wait to assume duties as a pharmacist until his schooling was completed In that store he remained for ten years The Riverton Drug Corporation by whom Jim was hired is a family operation the Jones family- -a father two daughters and one son Presently it owns five drugstores in various towns was in Utah When the corporation contemplating a purchase of another store Jim was asked to visit the town and to look things over If he would be willing to move and manage a store in Delta the corporation would buy 1 hat was the stipulation for purchase Jim actually had one day in which to make his decision Neither Jim nor his wife Barbara had ever been to Delta but they came down drove around and talked with people Living here would be somewhat Mr Ashby joined the Farm Bureau in 1965 and has held several Millard County committee positions and has been both state and national Young Farmer and Rancher chairman He was elected to the Utah Farm Bureau Board in 1971 and has been vice president of the organization since 1983 He and C Booth Wallentine Utah Tarm Bureau executive vice president will lease Utah Nov 29 for a trade expedition to Korea Taiwan and Japan where they hope to help sell Utah hay and other Utah farm commodities to Pacific Rim countries The first recorded jump Beach Florida in 1928 him Business of the Week Money Tree promotion underway of I SI’S nunlv re spsjft Keep in touch with Millard Count H kre i H re re 4 |
