Show Millard C'ounl) ( Ihurs I SPS Augml 28 1986 - Paxr 1 SENIOR IX CITIZEN NEWS Bessie Webb v - — PARTICIPATING IN EXCITING towns wore (loft to right) Ethol Bryant Larson Ida Ovorson TRIP to Ophir and Mercur mining Law Lillian Taylor Norman Erickson Arvilla Lovoll and LoGrande Law Delta Senior Citizen news tacular sight We sine appteciate the men that took their time to show us around tom there we went to the visitors center and watched a film about the town of Mercur Today the mine employs about 200 men rom Mercur we traveled to the town of ait Held Today there are only 19 families living there but at one time it was the third largest jn the state with 7000 people In 1855 a man named John Carson with four of his bt others and two other men settled there fhey built a stone foil 4 sods square to protect their families fioin the Indians In 1858 the army consisted of 3500 men settled there This was called camp Floyd John Cat son was an elder in the Mormon Chut eh and was very concerned for his people as there were 17 saloons There was no more need for the stone fort so it was taken down and he built a hotel and inn Many famous people stayed there including the Pony Express and stage coach passengers The family lived after John Carson’s death until 1947 Later on it was donated to the state It was restored by State I’aik Recreation Commission and dedicated May 16 1964 rom there we started for home Everyone said they had a wonderful time We are indeed grateful to those men who so graciously spent their time to show us around and tell us about those two canyons by !'(lu‘l Luw On August 15 eighteen Senior Citizens and bus diiver wood Bladen left Delta for a very special day Our first slop was a little town in Ophir Canyon called Ophit It is a beautiful canyon at one time they mined silver but the mine is closed now and only sis families live there A man that has lived there lor many years took us up the canyon to where they had cleared a place laige enough to have celebrations and reunions He told us about the early days of mining and of the town We sure appteciate him taking the tune to tell us about the town of Ophit torn there we went to another canyon It is now called Mercur but in the ear ly days it was called ewiston At first they mined silver but later discovered gold The town giew and prospered At the turn of the centuiy about 6000 people lived there On June 26 1902 a fire started in a cafe and spread quickly to other buildings and within a few hours most of the houses had burned The town has never been rebuilt They have a visitois center We met a man there who showed us around and explained the complete operation which is called open pit mining They were ready to do some blasting We stayed and watched The way they did was to set several hundred places and instead of one big blast they went off one after another It was a spee- - MMIMMMtMMIMlVMMMM HINCKLEY grandmother is doing as well (after tending the older grandchildren) as can be expected! remember if told you that Paul and Kathy Damron and some of their family were here to visit with their parents Enid and Carl Damron for a lew days There is always so much to get done on a trip like that Paul had meetings at BYU and they spent some tune visiting Kathy’s sister in St George They had not been home for about four years One of the fun things with the was getting acquainted youngest group of the children while playing violins Their music was very beautiful Tony and the children sang a number of songs for us and Tony favored us with a vocal solo Everyone enjoyed this program so very much and it was just great to visit with We all of them after the program sincerely compliment Tony and Lorraine on their accomplishments They and their family would be an asset to any community It is no surprise that Lorraine would be chosen as Mother of the Year from 1985 We are proud of her and our love and best wishes go back home to Arizona with them and a heartfelt invitation to please
