is out of order I was so sure I was in control of everything to begin with: my job my drinking my family etc All of a sudden (at least that’s how it seems) I realize I’ve never been in control of anything I’m not where I expected to be I’m not (he person I wanted to be I’ve become the person I was always afraid I was deep down inside My reason for writing is not to have you tell me what my solution should be (I’m looking for an answer I merely had to tell someone) Lost in the Labryinth of Self Dear Lost Having your life fall apart is seldom a "blowout” It’s usually a “slow leak” that develops from habits There is a solution but since you state that you’re not looking for one let me offer the following for consideration: The Lark Sitting high in the branches of a tree safe from harm he saw a traveler walking through the forest with a mysterious black box The lark flew down and perched on the stranger’s shoulder “What do you have in the tle black box?” he asked “Worms” the traveler replied “Are they for sale?” “Yes and very cheaply too The price is only one feather for a worm" The lark thought for a moment “I must have a million feathers Surely I’ll never miss one of them Here’s an opportunity to get a good dinner for no work at all” So he told the man he would buy one He searched carefully under his wing for a tiny feather He winced a bit as he pulled it out but the size of the worm made him quickly forget the pain High up in the tree again he began to sing as beautifully as before The next day he saw the same man and again he exchanged a again Printing Coleman report published in 1966 reported that a student’s positive attitudes about himself and his confidence are critical to achievement and that family is the factor in a child’s most important education Three important family influences that seem to determine achievement are: (1) students’ and parents’ expectations for school success (2) the tent to which they engaged in activities to support these expectations and (3) the student’s attitude that hard work is a necessary aspect of success When children are performing poorly in school parent involvement in a and comprehensive way mosed here from Florida two and a half years ago had no idea what the situation would be like My husband had just retired from over 40 years in the ministry Our daughteer and her family lived here and we wanted to be closer to some of our family Our two sons and their families live in Washington state and we figutcd to stay here for move to awhile and maybe Washington later on (Both my husfrom band and are originally Black Wool Stockings All the kids wore them Grandmothers knitted them They were made of “Germantown" yarn ordered from the Sears Roebuck catalog Stockings had to be held up There was a complicated harness with garters hanging down If your folks could afford it they were "boughten” but if your mother made them they were realThe fastener that hookly something ed on to the stocking was made from the buckles from old overalls A pair of bUk wood stockings would last the wearer a week A week was standard wear They would get washed on Saturday ready for Sunday and the rest of the days at school or on the Monday washday if there were two pair In those days nothing got washed after just one wearing Getting the stockings up over the "unions” was sometimes a problem so JOHN WATERBURY Dear John Letters Teacher to Parent can Concern consideration delights new residents we I pm The first day of school Jimmy’s mother came to me and told me she wanted to volunteer to help me in class We set up a sehedule and she came in three times a week to assist in the reading program She was also the PTA president Those duties brought her to school even more often In fact she was always putting up special bulletin boards organizing teaeher appieeiation events recruiting volunteers for the media center and in general helping in the school It was no coincidence that her son was an excellent student According to recent studies parent involvement in almost any fotm proves student achievement When parents show a strong interest in their children’s and participation schooling they promote the development of attitudes that aie key to achievement attitudes that are more a think that I would like to be actively involved with our system of justice and then again it is a difficult thing to really analyze one’s prejudice and throw it out in order to be fair and impartial The judge did say that of all the people called to serve only one in four have a chance to every be their bloomer legs down over the garters and were well dressed and warm That was a time when kids walked to school or rode a horse and before the time of warm school buses three generations ago Kids really looked forward to spring when they could leave the black wood stockings off and wear lighter tan cotton ones When spring really bloomed they could leave the unions off The ultimate happiness was when the snow finally melted on Fool Creek peak they could take them all off and go barefooted Mary Henrie feather for a worm What a wonderful effortless way to get dinner! Each the lark surrendered a day thereafter feather and each loss seemed to hurt less and less In the beginning he had many feathers but as the days passed he found it more difficult to fly Finally after the loss of one of his primary leathers he could no longer reach the top of the tree let alone fly up into the sky In fact he could do no more than flutter a few feet in the air and was forced to seek his food with the quarrelsome bickering sparrows The man with the worms came no more for there were no feathers to pay for meals The lark no longer sang because he was so ashamed of his fallen state This is how habits possess us— first painfully then more easily until at last we find ourselves stripped of all that lets us sing and soar This is how freedom is lost From your letter it sounds like you aren’t really interested in changing your life And that’s OK Some people are willing to tolerate more pain than others before they make any positive changes If you’re content with your life as it is now then keep heading on the course you have charted If that course isn’t leading you where you want to go then change it Knowingly or unknowingly in the past you set a course that led to loss of control You can reverse it As a poet once wrote “1 am the master of my fate I am the captain of my soul” This applies to us all We all make the decisions that determine our fate We are responsible for our actions So don’t give up and remember that life consists not in what unfortunate circumstances do to us but rather in how we deal with what they do to us CONFIDENTIALLY: "Even if you’re on the right track you’ll get run over if you just sit there” During our years in the ministry we have travelled extensively through the United Slates and met many people of We have all types and backgrounds been extremely fortunate to witness the great beauty of this wonderful country in its in and its people of ours both natural and manmade magnificent In our travels we have phenomenon covered about forty of our great United States Well it wasn’t long before we both decided that Delta was where we wanted to settle permanently My husband was very fortunate in finding steady employment to supplement our Social Security The climate here agreed with both of us and the relaxed personal atmosphedre in the community just helped us finalize our decision We were able to purchase a nice comfortable mobile home in a nice locale and finally after 25 years unpack our belongings from storage and settle down into a fairly predictable mode of life On July 17 1986 we experienced a situation that merits sharing with your readers My husband had been requested to perform a wedding On our way to the ceremony we stopped to pick up a friend As we were getting to the car placed my purse and the envelope containing the marriage license on top of the car and we drove off In the excitement and confusion never thought any more about it until we arrived at the began to look for my purse ceremony and to my utter horror I realized what had happened Somewhere enroute had lost both the marriage papers and my purse My friend Delores Palmer left to retrace our route and and search for the missing articles My husband remained at the wedding as the hour of committment was at hand Needless to say everything seemed bleak and hopeless to me Panic was quickly setting in just knew that someone had found my purse and was immediately planning hosv to use my All my ident ifeation credit cards papers were in there along with our checkbook The cash amount in my purse was not monumental but knew it was definitely history had no idea what someone would do with someone else’s marriage license! was almost certain it was a lost cause (That particular day was an extremely windy one so heaven only knew how far things had blown away or in what direction After retracing our steps and searching along the roads to no avail was absolutely sure my worse fears were to be realized However was to be quickly and pleasantly surprised We met a local law officer Steve Allred on a street close to our home and I excitedly told him of my plight He formed me that the local law enforcement agency had been trying to contact me to let me know that a local citizen Craig Teeples had found my purse on the highway our by White Sage and had turned it in to the police We quickly went to the station where I reclaimed by possessions The Police were exceptionally helpful and considerate After realized that my checking my putse checkbook was missing and even worse and marriage license papers were not there Everything else including cash and credit cards was in place My returned immediately to friend and the location where my purse was found two police officers returned with us and we all searched th area with no result We decided to return to the wedding and let them know the situation My husband would have to apply for and we duplicate matriage papers would have to contact the bank the next day and close our checking account we returned After the wedding home and decided to return to the scene of the “accident" and give it another to see if we had overlooked the checkbook and marriage papers envelope in the weeds along the road Bob and Our daughter and Sharry Harper joined us along with some friends Gary and Kathi Tafts We all beat the bushes and searched in V mile from the tact approximately location in the weeds along the road the checkbook never However surfaced So the next day we went to the bank and took the appropriate steps to correct the situation The bank personnel were most considerate and helpful At was both relieved and this point resigned to the fact that we were most fortunate to have recovered everything but this one item That afternoon my husband and returned to the spot and searched again one last time to see if we had No somehow missed the checkbook luck! We returned home asking the lord to help us find the lost! Later that afternoon the phone rang and as answered an unfamiliar voice asked me if my name was Mrs James R Gregg acknowledged and he then had lost my checkbook asked if was needless to say completely astonished He identified himself as Tim Facer and he informed me that he and his wife had found the checkbook along the highway by White Sage In summary recovered everything that was lost (except for a comb and pack of gum which was found on the highway and had been run over by traffic) This tesulted only from the concern and consideration and honesam proud an ty of everyone involved happy to be member of a community where these attributes abound hope this letter will in some way help us all to realize a bit of the trauma involved when something is lost Further J hope it will relay the message of relief and thankfulness when it is returned to everyone Many many thanks involved Rev and Mrs James R Gregg (retired) Fair Board thanks everyone Thanks to evetyone for supporting and participating in the Millard County Fair this month The exhibitions were great and the fair is destined to get better every year with your continued support and help The Fair Board Middle America Mail makes the heart grow fonder by Bob Thomas It has been said that you know you’re alone in the world when all of mail comes addressed to “Occyour upant” Furthermore you are not only alone but forgotten when all your missiles are directed to “Box Holder” thank the Muses have not yet reached that point of permanent purgatory received a mess of mail this morning and the thought of answering it though it will tear me away from me not one iota my love receiving mail and to have that have learned must resjoy continue pond in kind Come peek over my shoulder and I will share it with you This first one comes from Lafayette LA That’s in the heart of Bayou more than a hoot and a Country-holler out of Naw’lens The letter comes from J Wilson Domingue He’s a Cajun but you probably already that in that part His guessed people of the world date back to the early 1700s Some of them probably fought in the Battle of New Orleans at the side of Andy Jackson Or maybe they swung a cutlass with Jean Lafite Wilson and go back 40 years to the same ship He’s a little older than I am was in my late teens then he was m his early 30s His wife of a lot of years died in April and he’s sort of at loose ends now He occupies himself with his church work and volunteer hours with And he the retarded and handicapped roams around in a home too big for a single man like Wilson and he likes my letters So we correspond This one in the long white envelope is from Alice Bucci She lives on Los Feliz Boulevard in Los Angeles She was Alice Czutno when I first met her in ’46 She was my first real love Red hair and green eyes never knew whether to stop or go when was around her We used to go to Leo’s a little Italian place on South Wyoming Street back home for spaghetti and meatballs Her beauty dictated that she go off to the Barbazon School in New York She was meant to be a model I suffered not much more than a broken heart and went off to become a writer She married Jerry Bucci a television director and Emmy Award winner married someone whose name escapes me at the moment Alice enclosed some photographs taken in Alaska She and Jerry were up there visiting her daughter Manon All three went panning for gold outside of Fairbanks She is still beautiful and am still in love with her Jerry God bless him is very understanding If you’d like to see Alice watch the new season’s premier of “Who’s the Boss” starring Tony Danza don’t know who else is in it' but Alice will be the prettiest one You might catch her in a future "Facts of Life" too Here’s one from Mark Amott of the Chronicle Progress You all know him didn’t once Surprises of surprises-mention his new daughter Carly!
