Show Millard 2 I’ugc I SPS ounl ( (ffmnmcnte or everyone who was worried about my dishwasher - it is fixed nab(sed Dean Meyers the other day when he was in the neighborhood to had cheek nty work and see what done wtong or if had the wrong parts He found the problem The latch had didn’t wotk right All the parts replaced were just fine So he fixed the latch and now the dishwasher just should say washes cooks away or away It can’t complain about ovetwoik am less because in the summer in cooking than usual and at best the kitchen is my least favorite have modeiatc interest in food loom if someone else is fixing it but left up to me only Its food when my stomach have no choice gets so cianky he miciowave is sutc an asset for someone like me - can whip up a hot in less than a minute dog And speaking of dogs you may not be able to teach an old dog new tricks but old dogs can sine leach themselves new tucks Sampson would certainly be an who let esting study lot someone doesn't believe dogs have thought ptocesses hen he was in the kennel with his sister he learned to open the gate don’t know if he learned by winching us oi by accident And when chained the gale so opening the latch wouldn’t wotk he learned to climb over Just stuck his paws in the chain link and met he went After that he became a house dog and has been lot about three years now He hasn't gone near the latch in all that time Then we moved the kennel and rebuilt it for Oopic She had been a house dog but got tired of her antics and her amorous spells and moved het to the kennel Sampson prompthow to open the gate ly remembeted and let her out So chained the gate He still let her out because he figured out if he lifted the latch and pushed on the gitte it would move just enough for het to squeeze through So now have to chain the gate in a figure eight so it won’t shift those few inches which allow het out Well stopped him ftom letting her out but now he has a new trick He can open the back screen door So lie just lets himself out and goes out to check on Oopie That’s not the worst he doesn’t bother to shut the door behind him so all the eats go in And as have Thurv Jul - - 24 u I9H6 $u never had a cat with decent house manners they are not allowed in We arc now back up to 5 cats The two wandering toms decided to come home for a spell They look pretty skinny and tired so guess they are just back for food and a rest wish the eats would behave in the house as there are a few brassy mice who have moved in and so far have outwitted my trapping efforts We have one that is a TV addict and hangs aiound the TV room Then there was the wondetful day reached into the dog food barrel and saw a little mouse brought in a cat a put it in the hart el She gtabbed a mouse and in the process frightened four more out of the can feed with So brought in another cat who said ‘‘You've got to be kiddon’t like mice" So tried ding another cal He refused to cooperate So went back to the otiginal cal and she said one was enough Well Sampson was still hungry and still had four mice in the barrel So moved the barrel outside had a long talk with the cats about their purpose in life and how unpleasant life would be if they didn’t face up to their esponsibilit ics When came out later the mice were gone and the cats were cleaning their whiskers So Sampson got fed Can you believe summer is half over? t veiy summer have a race with the weeds - if can get them all pulled befote it snows Some years they win some years win think they may win this year just keep getting sidetracked with more rock garden and brick protects and moving the hose It seems like a Catch 22 situation If plant more things to eliminate weeds have more maintenance and less time for weeds and if work on the weeds the few little straggly plants have fade out for lack of attention But the plastic and chips and cactus have been the best plan so far Very few weeds make it up and too much attention kills cactus and yucci And when finally got smart and stopped trying to grow tropical plants and went to native types have had a real increase in success The Tamarask Russian Olive and cactus have been extremely hardy and are thriving Neglect does not hurt their feelings But despite the weeds and moving the hose still love summer best It can last until December and if it does might beat the weeds this year Postmarks A PW r!At) 1 1 £85 ii Leamington transition Many of you will notice that 'he Postal Service is advertising for a new contractor to provide postal services for the eamington area in this issue of the Chronicle Progress Most all of the Delta Oak City Lynndyl and Leamington ateas have received a letter advertising this in the mail It might be helpful to let you know just what we're doing here When it becomes necessary for the Postal Service to close a post office in a particular area we still have the responsibility to deliver the mail to the residents of that area There are a couple of ways that this can be done First would be to create or extend an existing rural or highway contract route into the area If there is a post office close by this is often done An example of this would be the Millard County Chronicle Progress The USPS Publisher Editor Susan Dutson Editorial Mark Amott Reporter National Affairs Bob Thomas at Large Desk Middle America Feature Consultant Editor Advertising t Deseret post office It was closed about 12 years ago and was replaced with the Deseret route because the Hinckley post office is so near That route was serviced by another kind of contractor called the Highway contract route More about that at another time A second way to deliver the mail would be to establish a "Community” post office The biggest difference between a community post office and a regular post office is that there is no Postmaster in a community post office The community post office is run by a contractor That means the Postal Service has entered into a legal contract with an individual or individuals to services to an area They provide postal receive no "Benefits” from the Postal Service other than their contract dollar amount They must pay all their own expenses such as rent heat lights and salaries from the amout paid them In our area Leamington and Scipio are Community post offices However they look act and feel just like any other post office I guess in reality they actually are The people that run them provide the same friendly service In fact most people in Leamington probably feel that Warren Overson is their Postmaster And in most ways he is just that Now that Warren is getting ready to retire next time you’re in the Leamington post office ask him how many fish he plans to catch when that big retirement day comes bet he can tell you some good fish stories already JOHN WATERBURY Dear John Letters Editor's notoi John Waterbury Health Care and questions or requests for Information may be sent to him at IHC 36 South State Street 21 Utah 84 st floor Salt Lake City These letters form the basis for the "Dear John Letters" Dear Readers: There’s a growing concern about alcohol abuse andor substance abuse among teenagers and while there are many symptoms that appear during the few development of these problems parents are able to objectively identify and respond appropriately With this in mind list the following may prove very useful Possible teenage substance abuse indicators Has there been a change in your teenager’s friends who seem different from the old crowd or is she spending a lot of time alone? 2 Has there been a change in normal daily routine? 3 Has there been a change in titude about school? 4 Has there been a change in the way he uses his money? 5 Has there been a change in carrying out responsibilities? Bleeding is frightening to you and the victim continue to reassure the patient and yourself that help is on the way Send for help how long can you wait? As long as the victim continues to breathe and you have the bleeding under pressure you can wait quite a in Delta long time Call No one needs to be moved in almost all cases except the danger of fire or if they are not breathing When moving someone extreme caution needs to be taken The head and the spine need to be moved only If you must move a by professionals Elder 7 & 14 Story Hour pm July 25 DHS Class of 1976 reunion ME Bird Center 6 pm dinner 7:30 pm program July 26 Christie Smith Kirk Tuttle wedding reception pm Ward Building John and Terri Shields Miller wedding reception pm Pete Shields residence DHS Class of 1936 50th class reunion noon to ??? What do you encourage? What do you tolerate? If you are uncertain about the answers to these questions then the following information may be of assistance The Greenwich Advisory Counsel on Youth and Drugs suggests the following guidelines concerning teenage parties: Set a time limit Establish a and definite starting ending time prior to the party 2 Agree on the guest list If you know who is invited beforehand you can curb the “open party" situation 3 Agree on rules ahead of time For instance no drugs including alcohol no leaving the party and then returning no “crashers” etc 4 Know your legal responsibilities Remember it is illegal to serve alcohol to minors 5 Invite another parent or couple over Having adults visible can prevent problems from developing 6 When your teen is going to someone else’s party call the host parent to check on supervision to make sure your basic ground rules will be honored 7 Make it easy for your teenager to leave the party If there is drinking or drug taking or any other reason your teenager wishes to leave a party make an arrangement that your child can call you or a designated adult for a ride home Urge your teenager never to drive with a person who has been drinking or taking drugs She should have an understanding that there will not be any punishments or restrictions for a call letting you know that things are getting out of hand 8 Be up to greet your teenager when he comes home from a party CONFIDENTIALLY Whether you think you can or can’t you’re right The Millard County Chronicle Progress office will be open Fridays and Monday from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm for )our convenience Evelyn Mallet is the office manager and will be at the office during those times Should anyone want to contact the Delta office direct on others days the phone numbers are or send pictures articles or advertisements directly to and Box 249 Delta Utah 84624 by Bob Thomas have some good news and some bad news for you today First I’m going to have to leave you for a while but the columns will be mailed to the Chronicle continually Progress I’ll let you decide which of those is the good news and which is the bad I’ll be in San Francisco when you’re reading this Thursday should be on the of my seated in a canvas chair at houseboat a card table and facing yet another blank sheet of paper rolled into a battered Olivetti You may remember six or seven weeks ago I wrote about reaching the I’ve been doing a lot of "Big since then I’ve come to the conclusion that maybe I should give up this nomadic and frequently Quixotic life for something a little more substantial I’m not talking Cape Cod cottage picket fence hearth and hound here and most certainly I’m not talking rocking chair and shawl I am talking houseboat though I bought this wee publication over in and I’m going to try to make a retirement nest out of it I think and It’f a classy journal devoted to the cultural life of the Great San Francisco Bay Area We’ll be talking about opera museums galleries — shows performers whatever’s artistic In my spare time I’m going to work on a book or two I’ve beeti building in my mind for half a lifetime want to say something about Delta before I get away from your physical midst You can think about it until I always get back And will be back return to places I like And that explains why I’ve been to Shamokin Pa once and Kennebunkport Me a dozen times You have to know that you have a nice community here You don’t need a stranger to tell you that The word “community” you probably also know comes from the French It means “to share” Once we Americans got hold of that word we did it a little damage We twisted it to our own likings and a good dictionary will give you 10 variations ranging from commune to communique (Relax I'm not going to harp on language today) What I've noticed about Della and what I’ve tried to tell people who ask it to other me to compare towns is that you all seem to be woven into a relatively fabric Maybe it’s because of a common belief Maybe it’s because you all seem to know each other — and it occurs to me that none of you is more distantly related from one another than “third predominately-share- cousin” I find no fault with that I live with the philosophy that “if it works don’t fix it” W hat I’m trying to say here (and apparently having some difficulty doing so) is that I will never think of Delta as “a long street with buildings on both sides” You’ll always be a "community” of sharing and caring people And when come back don’t want to find any changes It’s okay to grow of course That’s what civilized progress is all about I mean don't for any reason whatsoever stop caring about each other Don’t ever get that blase where you don’t think you need to know your neighbor’s name and never — absolutely never ever — reach the point where you throw rocks at him because the wind is blowing “his” leaves into “your” yard” Promise me that And keep huh?
