That is the question state officials want answered and they are asking Utah Power and Light to send an expert troubleshooter to Millard County to find out In response to complaints lodged with the Utah Committee of Consumer Services during a Delta meeting in June state officials said this week they will ask UP&L to launch a special investigation into why in several cases power bills have double tripled and quadrupled almost overnight for many average power consumers in Delta The committee’s executive secretary Joseph Ingles said that after examining three such cases he is convinced that efforts should be taken by UP&L to plain why the bills have soared overnight “In nine years with the committee have never see anything like these power bills” Mr Ingles said "The public has a right to expect something to happen and we will ask UP&L to launch a special investigation” Mr Ingles is asking that anyone in the Delta area who thinks they have a similar unexplained power consumption problem to contact him at the committee in Salt Lake City by calling In addition a petition explaining the problems from the consumer perspective will be available for signing at the Peterson’s Conoco Service Station at the northeast corner of First West and Main Street in Delta during the coming week This petition will be delivered to the Committee of Consumer Services Solving the mystery of exceptionally high power bills is complicated by the fact that problems can lie either in the individual home or business system or may be part of a larger problem in the UP&L system According to several area residents who complained to the committee in June local UP&L workers have check ed and rechecked several home systems without finding what in many cases are double and triple power consumption The on power meters readings residents told the committee they are certain that they have not consumed the extra power which would justifiy the higher meter readings and high power bills UP&L officials point to computer printout readings of meter boxes which apparently prove the power is going through the meters To this point UP&L has argued that extra power consumption must be caused by problems in the individual systems cluding but not limited to such things as faulty wiring faulty grounding coil burnout in heavy power users such as a water heater Even power theft has as a possible been investigated explanation State officials said they hoped to on the special have a response troubleshooting request from UP&L within the next few weeks Year The Millard Board of Education would like to announce that Mrs Marilyn Nielson has been selected as The Teacher of the Year for Mrs Nielson has taught for 26 years She has been a dedicated teacher serv ing students in the Lynndyl Learn ington and Delta areas for these years On July 9 1986 the Board recognized her by presenting a plaque for her outstanding service and nominated her to participate in the Utah Teacher of the Year Program Mrs Nielson has served as secretary and president of the Millard Education She has worked on Association numerous state committees including the State Core Curriculum Committee for Social Studies and is presently serving on the State Text Book Adoption Committee She also was very active on the Planning Committee for the new Delta South Elementary School and was instrumental in developing a plan that was workable and practical for all teachers and students that would eventually attend school in this new facility Mrs Nielson says “I think the best thing about teaching is seeing the happy smile of achievement on a child’s face after he has struggled with a task or finally understood a concept he has been struggling with" Marilyn lives in Lynndyl with her Robert husband They have five children four who have completed advanced college degrees and one who is enrolled at Utah State currently University Holden fire death accidental The death of Holden resident Merla Stephenson 61 has been determined to have been caused by smoke inhalation following a fire in her home which damaged one room Wednesday July 2 The fire and unattended death was routinely investigated by police and state fire officials They determined the fire and death were both accidental The fire was caused by a frayed electrical cord and Mrs Stephenson was unable to escape the extensive smoke which caused damage thoughout the home Mrs Stephenson was a beloved friend of many in the Holden and East Millard area She also had many relatives in the area At the time of her death she was suffering from Parkinson’s Disease and was under the care of relatives who had left the home only briefly to attend to errands Police speculate that even if Mrs Stephenson had not been an invalid she might not have been able to escape the dense smoke caused by the electrical fire which apparently filled the home in a matter of minutes |
