contract yes P Waldo Warnick Millard County Central Utah Water Conservancy District By In 1960 the Sevier River Basin suffered a severe drought In August of that year went with WC Cole to measure the water at the Lynndyl River gauging station southeast of Lynndyl and there was less than forty second feet By Labor Day the flow of the river had decreased to the point that we were able to put boards in front of the tunnel at the Sevier Bridge Reservoir and inspect the tunnel Because of the drought in 1960 the directors of the DMAD Irrigation Companies became serious about trying to get water from the Central Utah Project for the Sevier River Basin A committee was selected to work with the Upper Sevier River Water Users to form a Sevier River After Water Conservancy District about three years of getting nowhere we decided to organise the Millard County Water Conservancy District This concept was supported by the water and civic leaders of the County Those from the east side of the county realised that there was a chance that they may receive only indirect benefits but felt we should show a united effort The organisation of the District was voted upon by the county residents and passed 19 We then successfully petitioned the court to include Millard County as part of the Central Utah Water Conservanthousand acre cy District Thirty-sifeet of water was allocated to the Sevier Rier Basin out of the one hundred and thousand feet that was to be brought to the Bonneville Basin from the Strawberry Reservoir The collector system which includes miles of pipelines and tun- - repayment in the early thirties My and had water rights enough for an average year but that year they were only able to irrigate once That along with the made for very difficult depression times Some people would have you believe that the Sevier River Basin has not received anything from taxes paid to the Central Utah Water Conservancy like the one folks owned people would have you believe that the Sevier River has not received anything from taxes paid to the Central Utah Water Conservancy District The facts are that the District has spent over a million dollars for cloud seeding gauging stations and rebuilding the Sevier Bridge Reservoir spillway In addition projects farther up the Sevier River saved West Millard County from being destroyed by flooding of the past few years Some Basin nels and three reservoirs plus the are Reservoir enlarged Strawberry either complete or under construction and will be finished in the next three annual share Millard County’s years of water can be stored in Strawberry Reservoir and delivered less storage losses for supplemental use in years of below normal water supply Many of you living in the area now have never seen a shortage of water in this area hope we never see a drought District The facts are that the District has spent $120000 on cloud seeding and $252000 on gauging stations $408442 on the Sevier Bridge Reservoir spillway reconstruction Farther up the system a new spillway If the saved the Paiute Reservoir Paiute Reservoir had failed in either 1983 or 1984 the Sevier Valley would have been gutted and Sevier Bridge Reservoir would have failed and West Millard would have been destroyed One thing ihat is most upsetting to me is that university professors from areas have been retained to teach in Utah universities which is the second driest state in the nation They have claimed to be experts on water problems They have been insulting to our native water experts who have grown up knowing our problems and worked a lifetime trying to solve them If it had not been for the vironmentalists in and out of the state the Central Utah Project would have been completed years ago We had to develop the Colorado River water for the state in order to protect our rights here are many people that were hoping and working tor this not to happen Millard Counts has always been a strong supporter of the Central Utah Water Project hope they will continue to show their support by voting lor the supplemental contract have worked hard to see that the xevier River Basin gets its fair share realize that the road ahead is rough but here would we be it our ancestors had not gone the extra mile Vote for the new supplemental contract CUP lifeline to Millard County Keith Fillmore Gillins Mayor Ruth Delta Hansen Mayor Sevier River counties That water delivery process starts high in the Uintas where water is diverted from its normal course into the Strawberry Aqueduct That aqueduct winds through the Uintas Mountains for 37 miles picking up extra water from several different creeks The water from the aqueduct flows into the Strawberry Reservoir which was recently enlarged to accommodate it by construction of the Soldier Creek Dam It is hoped that upon completion of the Bonneville Unit another extensive aqueduct and canal system extending southward will deliver Strawberry Reservoir water to the Sevier Bridge Reservoir for use in Millard County Delta High's championship team this year consisted of (back row) Nichole Nielson Lisa Moody Joyce Jackson Dixeen Dutson Jannette Larson Sue Miller Jamie Wood Andrea of recreation flood control and part of the costs of the agriculture portion One of the first projects to be built was the Strawberry Reservoir in asakh and I tab Counties Since that lime there have been several reservoirs completed in I lah the Hyram in (aihe County the Weber Basin in Weber County the Deer Creek in I tah ( ounly and Joe’s $ alley in Fmery (ounly These pro the seven jects have controlled flooding and developed water which has been the backbone of growth in I tah for the past fifty years W hen it was decided to build storage projects on the Colorado River the water was divided between the upper stales where the water originated and the lower slates and Mexico In order for Utah to receive its share ot thi water it was necessary to huild dams and reservoirs to keep the high spring runoff from getting into the Colorado River and provide storage water for laic summer irrigation for those that had prior rights The Central Utah Project is the moi ambitious water project ever in the State of I lah and the en tral I lah Water Conservancy District was organized to distribute the water and operate and maintain the project repay the federal government IPP
