' X &£ L'JR Poodles “Berry Glommers” put the last of the strawberry jant the freezer today It was not made with Utah berries and lacked that full “Utah” flavor that any fruit grown in Utah soil and sun has But it was strawberry jam and will taste good on some cold winter morning over some melting butter on fresh muffins just out of the oven It is hard to get Utah straw bernes and our alkali soil just discourages strawberry plants They just sit there and do nothing the first year and by the second or third year they are spaded up and planted to four o’elocks or zinnias that like alkali Some careful gardeners plant some plants in barrels or boxes and where the alkali cannot reach them and harvest a few strawberries Back in time when school was out the young people could in the spring get a group together and go to the “Provo Bench” (Orem) to pick strawberries in the large fields They were called “berry glommers” They in didn’t make much just enough depending on how energetic they were about picking 1 hey slept on the farmers lawns and camped in his back yard and the farmer saw to it that all was well It was hard work bending and off the and pinching reaching strawberry with the stem still on no pulling the berry from the stem The about the farmers were particular stems The fingers were stained and the back ached and the muscles were sore but it was a job when jobs were scarce The pay was by the case of strawberries picked and there weie good times between the working hours Now most of the berry fields are schools ed with houses shopping centers paiking lots and churches It has been a long time since a group of young people said “L et’s go to the Provo Bench and be " “berry glommers Mary Henrie Drug education and prevention We all get upset and feel helpless when we think about terrorism or finding a cure for cancer But what about the many things that we can prevent simple things like lowering the death rate by wearing seat bclta or taking responsibility lor our own health by eating propel ly and exercising While marchers and lobbyists organize to protest nuclear war and even greater and more realistic threat to our society is right in our own back yard The threat is that of substance abuse and we can do something about it The preceding article in this series pointed out that we do have problem but we also have a lack of public awareness of this pro blem Let us look now at what is being done by county agencies evaluate the success of their programs and deterservices arc mine what additional needed Pamela Nielson BSW woiks foi Central Utah Mental Health (CUMH) as alcohol and drugs prevention and education specialist The key word here is prevention Pam went to faculty meetings in our schools to explain hot emphasis and availability Her expci tise has been used a geat deal in both Delta and Fillmore schools She gave in over filly a 45 minute presentation classrooms from elementary through high schools last year She gets childien to talk about their feelings to Icai n that it’s ok to feel sad or depressed or in turmoil and that it’s important to talk to someone about those feelings There is a teen alcohol and drug school for all first offenders in the county who have been arrested and referred by the juvenile court In tlm school both the offenders and then parents spend an hour and a half in separate groups talking about their pro blems with facilitators Lila Sannes and Beverly Phelps Then the parents and teens are put together for an additional half hour of interaction This appeals to be a highly successful format Both new families and long term residents ol Millard County have been involved Young people say they seldom get a chance to talk about their problems without being lectured or preached to by adults The most comprehensive prevention pro piogram in our schools is the gram which concentrates on good self esteem responsible decision making feecoping skills and talking about Some of our faculty membets lings fiom elementary through high school Sahara Leasing is selling the following cars & trucks TO THE HIGHEST BIODER(S) All vehicles must go! Try our own Delta Main Street!! 30 MPH posted speed limit no traffic control devices and a shopping area One of the police departments objectives is to prevent community wide any auto pedestrian traffic accidents We are confident this can be accomplished through involvement and participation and finally traffic enforcement The problem is two fold: Pedestrians vs motorist The law requires that a motorist must stop for a pedestrian within a crosswalk once the pedestrian has reached that portion of the roadway that the motorist is driving Quote (1) (a) Pedestrians’ right of wa- y(1) (a) When signals are not in place or not in operation the driver of a vehicle shall yield the right of way slowing down or stopping if necessary to yield to a pedestrian the roadway within a crossing crosswalk when the pedestrian is upon the half of the roadway upon which the vehicle is traveling or when the pedestrian is approaching so closely from the opposite half of the roadway as to be in danger (b) No pedestrian shall suddenly leave a curb or other place of safety and walk or run into the path of a vehicle which is so close as to constitute an immediate hazard (2) Whenever any vehicle is stopped at LETTERS hazard” Quoting from the summary referred to at the beginning of this article there were 56 pedestrians killed in 1983 The pedestrian most often contributed to the accident by crossing improperly or what is commonly called “jay walking” Pedestrians not crossing in a accrosswalk not at intersections counted for 33 deaths or 59 percent of total deaths Therefore the pedestrian has an added responsibility of crossing at intersections where there are marked crosswalks In as much as most accidents are very hazardous causing severe personal injury as well as death the Delta City Police Department will actively pursue enforcement measures will be issued to both Citations motorist and pedestrians which will and fine quire court appearance amounting to $6700 will be imposed of those convicted police and community Through teamwoi k we are confident that we can together make the City of Delta a standard of excellence in public safety Steve Allred Crime Prevention Specialist Delta City Police Dept TO THE EDITOR Senior questions sewer decision Fillmore City Council: The Council members have been elected by a majority of citizens who vote Therefore one would think that the Council’s actions would mainly be in the best interest of the people who elected them This does not seem to be the case I am a senior citizen who owns my home pays taxes votes and loves Fillmore and the lifestyle here In talking to many of the senior citizens in my category they feel that the is being railsewer improvement be roaded and should through or disapproved by an approved election Most senior citizens are on fixed incomes and must plan very carefully to pay taxes utilities high insurance premiums and still have enough for and the necessities food shelter of life believe that the reason this issue is not being put to the voters is because the Council knows that it would be defeated Deficit spending hasn’t worked for the Federal Government and it won’t work for Fillmore either This issue puts a lien on rout WHEEL BMVE 1979 Bronco 4x4 - New engine 1978 Chevy Custom Van 1979 Ford Pickup a marked crosswalk or at any unmarked crosswalk at an intersection to permit a pedestrian to cross the roadway the driver of any other vehicle approaching from the rear shall not overtake and pass such stopped vehicle” These two sections of the Utah State place Traffic Rules & Regulations responsibility on the motorist However the law also places responQuote sibility on the pedestrians: (1) (b) “No pedestrian shall suddenly leave a curb or other place of safety and walk or run into the path of a vehicle which is so close as to constitute an immediate every property in Fillmore without the owner’s consent A more fair way to pay for the sewer improvement is by charging according to the amount of culinary water used by each household This is a serious matter and every in Fillmore should be household concerned Max B Nichols Dear Editor: We would like to thank you very much for providing space for our Delta Area Soccer organization advertising scoring and team pictures We really appreciate this service In response to a letter jn the paper about having soccer games the same time as the soccer games will be over at 1:30 pm and will start about then We also continue to work with the Football and Baseball programs In response to the question “If paid in the spring do have to pay in the fall?” The answer is yes Everyone pays in the fall So sign up now!
