of $5000 for shooting two Mule Deer near the UtahNevada border in Millard County The poachers were arrested October 6 by a contingent of Utah Division of Wildlife officials who were on special assignment in the west deseret area according to local Wildlife Conservation Officer Steve Cherry The caught suspects were spotlighting big game in the early morning hours and officers were eyewitness to the shooting of one deer Cherry said he five DWR Enforcement Specialists and a Special Agent from the US Fish and Wildlife Service had gone to the area to check on what tley had determined to be an on going poaching problem there but were suprised to actually catch someone in the act “This was a unique situation to run across poachers We usually find out about them from reports phoned in by concerned citizens” Cherry said Guilty of the Class A misdemeanor are Clinton James Richie 44 James 19 Dale Eugene Richie Clinton Brown 33 Charles Allen Jeffries 41 and LaVonne Ann Wilden 33 all of Las Vegas They were arraigned in 9th Circuit Court at Fillmore last week before Judge Robert Owens who levied fines of $1 750 to Clinton James Richie and Charles Allen Jeffries The other three defendants received fines of $500 each In addition two big game hunting rifles and the hunting were confiscated licenses of all the suspects were revoked for 3 to 5 years A truck used in the poaching crime is being held in lieu of complete fine payment Cherry said the larger fines against the elder Richie and Jeffries were the maximum allowed by law “They were each fined $1000 for the poaching
