we really need one of these services we really don't realize how important and necessary they are The Sheriff Road Fire and Landfill Departments and EMT services are just a few that come to mind Some of the most outstanding departments in the state of Utah are here in Millard County We have high caliber people who do an excellent job Some are paid employees and others are volunteers who generously give of their time and expertise for our benef L Recently I had the opportunity to ride as a patient in one of the new ambulances to Provo was impressed by the professional help and the kindness shown by the three EMTS who continually reassured me that things would be just fine Wc are so fortunate to have good doctors and EMT s who do their job well Thank goodness someone cares enough to take the time u enroll in a three month course All of the Sheriff s Department including deputies and jailers are EMTS This is not required by the state of Utah but Sheriff Ed Phillips requires this of all his people because they are usually the first people on the scene In 1990 Fillmore City completed a new ambulance facility and hopefully by late summer of 1991 Delta City will have a new ambulance facility as well The new facility will be located directly north of the Millard County Office Building (The old ambulance shed be ing Motor Vehicle Schedule: Fillmore A Delta weekdays Millard County Junk mailCalls anger consumers Dennis Hinkamp Ltah State University For most of us junk mail and junk telephone calls used to be a minor noyance In the last five years they have become a major irritant The tipping point for me was that not only did get business junk mail but also stacks of catalogs from sources I never requested I got randomly dialed phone calls The callers assumed there was a “lady of the house" Or worse the calls were recorded mesBy sages Charitable which organizations previously respected started doubling their efforts once they got a small donation from me No "Thanks for contributing we hope you donate next year” But rather their response was more like "since you wanted to donate to save the whales you must also want to donate to save the baby seals long hom sheep coyotes marmots and penguins" If you belong to any sort of alumni association you know that it is better at tracking you down than the IRS They generally come at you through both mail and telephone The whole process is beginning to resemble a pyramid scheme For every one donauon you get 10 new requests For every one catalog purchase you get 10 new catalogs Then if you contribute to any one of the 0 new organizations or buy from one of the 0 new catalogs you get 10 more Soon you are buried in mail This process wouldn't be quite so irritating if these organizations just sent your name to other organizations you might be interested in In reality when they say "we sent your name” in most cases what they mean is "we SOLD your name” percent of the time when you pay for your subscription to a magazine and get your free fish head telephone or whatever you are never told that this name selling will take place The irritation factor plus the perception of wasting paper and other natural resources is starting to get more consumers angry and causing some publications to rethink their strategies Two magazines and one mail order company I came across are now providing their subscribers with lists of the organizations with which they trade or rent mailing lists These two magazines also make it easy for your name to be removed from any of these lists These are steps in the right direction but there are still hundreds of organizations and publications that do not observe these rules of etiquette Articles para los que leen Espafiol En un estuerzo para sevir los que leen en el condado de Millard el Condado de Millard County Chronicle Progress esta comencado una column a para los que hahlan esparto) Hay muchas noliceas anuncios avisos que scran interesante para los residen-teque hahlan espartnl Con la ayuda de muchos amigos que hablan espanol esperamos para esistir los Si tenes articulos avisos onoticias dc importancia y tencs ganas de vir los en el period ico deganos por favor Los articulos necesitan esiar cn las oficina el viemes Gracias (Muchas Gracias Dave Noah) VOLUNTEER UTAH LITERACY COALITION LITERACY'S BEST FRIEND 1 (800)451-950- 0 Media Man! Hello Muddah Hello Faddah by Ken (Lamp's klutch klown) Rand Dear Mom: I didn’t have to smuggle this letter mil past the camp counselors this time A strange thing has happened As you know I volunteered to come here when they caught me picking my nose during the National Anthem at a High School Wrestling Match Public Irreverence is a class B misdemeanor They maced me (for their protection) stuffed me in a bodybag (for my protection) and dumped me here (for psychiatric evaluation) The Woody Guthrie Memorial Asylum Camp 22 is run by the Fnends of Old Liberals After the Great Patnotic War in the Mideast you recall FOOL wrote the Liberals Preservation Act The act declares Am mean leftists an endangered species and says the few left should be preserved as part of our national hentage like the"Grcenies” tried to save the whale Here Democrats socialists comatheists mies unionists and other leftists roam without permits cnticize the President's foreign policy out loud even protest against the SAL bailout or other domestic policies all without weanng disguises in fear of mob violence Even secular humanists get indoor plumbing Bui reporters are segregated for their own protection We have our own lunch counters bathrooms and water fountains in a cave off to the left of Libertarian Island I don't mind riding in the back of the camp bus The counselors protect us as much as they can I’m sure I'd heard stones from escaped porters about crayons William F "Reader’s talks and the Digest treatment” so I lieddunng processing I said I wrote fiction “Aha!” they said “A reporter!” The yellow badge is rather stylish I think I met CNN correspondent Peter Arnett last week He was organizing a camp newspaper He wanted me townie an advice column for the politically confused I suggested he call the paper "The It Khronicle" Kamp Katchakommy was just typical reporter cynicism Mom and since he was a reportei I didn’t think he’d freak ouL But he told me to do something to myse'f that may have been fun if it wasn’t physically impossible I didn't know it then but he was Parent-Teach- er just returned from my son’s conference As a teacher I It's ways rather enjoy conferences important for me to match parents’ faces with their child's It’s a chance to share some special story about each student "You should hear him reading to his kindergarten pal” "Tammy fell while playing soccer but she just kept going Didn’t want to let the team down Your kid’s a trooper” Conferences give me the chance to tell about things that just don't reduce to a grade or an average score Now let me tell you about the other side of conferences About being die parent I get nervous I'm not in control Although I try hard not to I know that a is wrapped up in lot of my my child's success in school Conferences are sometimes like a test of my parenting skills and they make me uncomfortable I c!)' starting to “turn” A few days later he was a"rehabiliutee”“rm a Republican now you blank ctyblank traitors” he yelled as he left I swear he actually said Remember Edmund O’Brien in "1984” the scene where Winston Smith leams to love Big Brother? They play old John Wayne movies on the camp the General Norman TV and they Schwarzkopf Gulf War press conference now and then We lose a few By law they can't keep Republicans locked up with liberals Maybe it's die food Granola for fruit for breakfast lunch and crow for dinner is okay but when fellow “Libbies” start chanting “two patties special sauce lettuce cheese” and so on in the cafeteria you can tell they’re turning It can't be the guards or counselors as we're supposed to call them True they're lawyers but they’re Angels True they say "Have a nice day!” and play Paul H arvey on die camp radio but they 're only armed with rolled up Wall Street Journals and they mean well I'm sure Some campers get homesick even those from big dailies like the Provo Bungler Still travel restrictions protect us they say from innocent readers and TV watchers made violent by our inflammatory prose distortion innulies I'm sure endo and (A ravmg Republican can be pretty scary Mom I saw one once waving a newspaper frothing at the mouth and looking for a reporter to hit Good thing I had my rubber nose and false moustache ) Whyever Mom the population here has shrunk since I got here This morning I woke up and noticed something was wrong My roomie Rudolph die Red wasn’t listening to his Peter Paul and Mary 45s No one was singing "We Shall Overcome” in the shower The place was as empty as a politician's promise Everybody was gone I'm free I can leave whenever I want But I won'tyet Youhavctocutoffyourbeard before you leave and I refuse It Is starting to itch though Love Your son conferences I imagine that other parents share my concern I imagine they want to avoid hearing something unpleasant I imagine this is why there are so many reasons for so many parents not to attend conferences Let me tell you why I go Although there may indeed be unpleasant news it’s important for me to hear it It’s important for me to know what I can do to help It's important that my little boy (who is now 5 inches taller than I) know that what he does at school will be communicated to the home and as consethat we will deal with quences and rewards A conference is a talking report card It's an opportunity for interaction I learn so much more about my child than could ever be reduced to a grade printout Good news or bad a conference is an opportunity that should not be missed Child abuse: What every parent should know By L Jon Buttars Utah State University All parents have bad days On such days children can be a nuisance As pressures build parents sometimes respond with anger and even violence The child may be deeply loved but the hitting may be too hard too frequent or the shaking too aggressive Have you noticed this type of response is more likely when stress builds up in your life? What happens when bills are overdue the baby is crying Johnny is hitting Susan you have a splitting headache and the phone keeps ringing? i that moment you may lose control and take out your frustrations on your children What happens when you have been out of work for c’eral months your spouse is waiting tables every evening you are stuck with the kids and nothing seems to be going right? This may cause you to react with anger toward yourkids or maybe your spouse Remember "children don't misbehave they simply behave to get their needs met” This does not mean that children’s behavior should always be accepted by parents but that their behavior is probably expressing needs they have Remember that your child is not purposefully trying to interfere with your pursuit of peace and quiet Parents need to learn effective methods of helping children modify behavior rather than and using undue punishment There are many methods you can use to avoid taking out frustrations on family members Call a “time out” to cool down and collect yourself The National Committee for the Prevention of Child Abuse recommends a few simple alternatives: Slop in your tracks Step back Sit Down 2 Take five deep exhale slowly 3 Count to 10 Better year 20 Or recite the alphabet 4 Phone a friend a relative or go visit someone 5 Still mad? Hug (pillow Or munch on an apple 6 Thumb through a magazine book or newspaper 7 Do some 8 Pick up a pencil and write down your thoughts 9 Take a bath or a cold shower 10 Lie down on die floor or just put your feet up Put on your favorite record or radio program There are also Family Support Centers in every community in Utah that specialize in preventing child abuse They offer crisis nurseries for parents who need a break from their children and parenting classes which teach effective parenting skills Many of these centers offer free counseling for parents who have lost their cool or are afraid they might soon If you feel you need help contact the nearest Family Support Center in Salt Lake City) or the National Child Abuse Hotline both offer confidential services at little or no cost |
