lot of hard work and dedication1 These two characteristics of the sport of track are not everything the sport has to offer but they are two of the best things "It takes plenty of guts and dedication but it's worth iL It feels good to be m shape but it doesn't feel good getting there” said junior track runner Cody Hamblin Track runners and Field cventers have both begun preparing for the upcoming track season If you were to come early about 6:30 am to school last month you'd find a few early joggers warming up After school many runners have used the hallways as their track and have even sprinted or set up hurdles Now that the warm weather is coming the tracksters race outside In other words runners have been doing the traditional “loop” The most common loop being a two mile course The local loop takes runners past the stockshow bam then down by the to the cemetery middle school turning right again and back to the high school Distance runners get a better kick though running a longer route Instead of turning at the cemetery they keep running to Losee Lumber and then come down past Delta Sports Center and back to the high school making a well rounded five mile course “The loop is great for a workout It gives you a goal and you’re less likely to quit if you’re out away from the school” said experienced distance runner senior Lance Greener The field cventers have also taken a Jirow at preparing for the upcoming season Many of them have been spending hours in the weight room “We also have been watching technique videos because throwing in track said Lafe is more than just muscle" Moon who is a junior this year The track team as a whole has one goal of taking state When boys’ head track coach Coach Rowley was asked if they could do it he said “We seem to have a younger team this year and it's hard to say at this lime but I encourage everyone to run and workout a lot before our first meet" DHS track team will have it first at the Dixie Invitatrack meet ovofyofloplay Soccer sportsmanship meeting successful Sportsmanship was the theme of a very successful AYSO section meeting in Salt Lake You were very well represented Nine of eleven board members attended For you this means a board very well educated and attune to the Which in basic AYSO philosophies turn assures your child a positive experience To share that knowledge with our volunteers is essential in determining the quality of our program We will host a coach and referee certification clinic in the very near future If you are a coach or ref plan to attend If you are contemplating the possibility of volunteering we welcome your attendance There’s no better way to feel confident and pleased about volunteering than to know what it's all about We will publicize the dates of these clinics and call those we have listed and those who have expressed an interest Sportsmanship is hard to define It goes well beyond a handshake at the end of the game It is an attitude Coaches Refs and parents must be responsible for teaching this attitude Some words that help define this attitude are: kindness just fair graciousness acceptance and honesty Coaches should show acts of sportsmanship toward opposing players We can congratulate them for outstanding plays and sympathize with an injured player Remember that character development is number one as opposed to winning Don't make too many demands on a child’s time Their attendance is usually parent dependent AYSO stresses only 2 hr practices or 12 hr practice and even suggests that no or very little practice is recommended division! Do not demand or for l expect more energy to be expended by a child than is physically possible If you don’t know what is normal for the age group you are coaching ask someone more knowledgeable or experienced or go to your local library Find out Do not expect total commitment They must be allowed to be involved in other activities without stress or guilt Remember soccer is fun It is not their job! For planning purposes ask them and their parents to inform you in advance if they can’t attend a practice Be generous with lots of genuine meaningful praise Correct their mistakes in a positive teaching manner If a child has been hurt keep them out for the games duration This shows everyone what is most important Coaches should keep abreast of current coaching trends and exercises for the development age groups physical H andle the parents of your children in an manner before the first game Let them know what AYSO philosophies are and what you will expect from them in support of their child the team the referee and yourself The referee is also an important for sportsmanship His attitude can determine the emotional environment of the game good or bad Every game should be treated as the world cup in attitude Knowing what you're doing is important Act like it's There should be mental important preparation and physical too Do your best! Knowing the rules is the easy part Good attitude and fair application done in a professional manner is harder instructions should be rect simple and kept to a minimum They shcaild be given in a positive “I know this will be a well played and fair way During a game" and very game use quiet cautionary reprimands ref to player The way you talk and can the bring them back player respect into the spirit of the game The ref should not turn a deaf ear to sideline criticism React in a firm but positive way instead This will prevent a negative attitude accelerating and becoming a disruptive influence to the game The referee should be thinking hearing and speaking professionally at all times no or game negatives during Before those of us on the sideline question the ref with a“Hey ref! What's the call!" remember that unlike other American sports the laws of soccer provide the referee to apply the spirit of the law rather than the letter of the law The laws specifically instruct the referee that the game should be played “with as little interference as possible" This means they may not stop play to penalize an obvious violation if they feel it is trifling or if in stopping the game they would actually give an advantage to the team committing the foul Let's let'em play! Play on!
